Preds Chairman Throws “Boots” Under A Bus

Earlier tonight, Preds Chairman David Freeman finally issued a statement in response to William “Boots” Del Biaggio’s bankruptcy woes. Boots has had a rough week after being slapped with three enormous lawsuits and a federal investigation, and we were worried because he owns almost a third of our precious Preds. Anyway, the gist:

“Here’s the bottom line for the citizens of Nashville and fans of the Predators: regardless of how many lawsuits are filed against Mr. Del Biaggio, regardless of the amounts of the claims, regardless of the details of the allegations, Mr. Del Biaggio’s problems are personal. Mr. Del Biaggio is a minority owner. His minority ownership stake and its final disposition will not impact operation of the club. It is my hope and anticipation that the club will be even stronger once this saga reaches its logical conclusion and Mr. Del Biaggio is no longer associated with the club.”

Whew! As long as they aren’t taking off to Canada anytime soon. Head over to the Preds’ official site for the entire statement.

Happy Hour: Suit Up For The Weekend

Happy Friday, Nashville. You’ve made it to the end of another week, and so have we. We hope you have a blast defending yourselves against the 200,000 extra country music fans we’re welcoming with open arms this weekend, and we’ll see you next week!

  • Mindy McCready decided to make the CMA Music Festival just a little more colorful and announced her new fanclub slogan: “You get backstage if you get a felony!” We’re sad to say we won’t be getting backstage any time soon, Mindy. Maybe next year. [Nashville Is Talking]
  • One of the Preds’ biggest investors, William “Boots” Del Biaggio, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in California today. Del Biaggio, who owns 27% of the Preds, was slapped with two multi-million dollar lawsuits and a federal investigation earlier this week. [Tennessean]
  • Franklin police are looking for two gang members who allegedly gave them some false information (read: names) when they were arrested last month. [WTVF]
  • Anyone watch that show “So You Think You Can Dance?” We really only only manage to catch it when we’re desperate, but some guy from Nashville made the final cut, ensuring that Nashville maintains its reality-show-star-generating reputation. [Tennessean]

Photo Of The Day: June 6, 2008

We’re not sure where this was taken (we feel like we should know), but this contribution from finleyreed and all its weird towers gives us yet another strange sight to hunt down in Nashville.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

The 48 Hour Film Project Returns To Nashville

We got word today that the Nashville 48 Hour Film Project is now open for registration. On July 18, teams of amateur (and some not-so-amateur) filmmakers will embark on a two-day adventure, probably completely unaware of the insanity that awaits them. Nashvillest participated two years ago, and let’s just say we took last year off to recover.

The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hours. On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it will show at a local theater, usually in the next week.

The showings have been at the Belcourt in the past. It’s a lot of fun, so if you think you’re up for it, let us know. We might be looking to join a team again this year.

Bright & Early: We Love Our Weatherman Edition

Good morning, Nashville. It’s going to be another hot one outside today. This edition of “Bright & Early” goes out to Channel 4 meteorologist Tim Ross, who made our morning by, well, just being Tim. After modeling one of the best ties in his collection thus far, he tells us just how “Wooooo!” glad he is to be on our computers with us this morning. Then he delivers the grim news of 94 degrees and muggy before sending some of our favorite country stars floating cheerfully across the screen to lift our spirits and remind us of what the real forecast is for the downtown area this weekend. Folgers aside, we’ve decided that Tim is definitely the best part of waking up.

  • Georgia on our minds. Recent reports show that Tennessee schools are on their way up as one of the most improved states in the country. We’re really proud of this, and would like to also point out that Georgia’s schools were among the six least improved. Maybe they should’ve spent less time trying to impose their tyrannical beerless rule upon Copperhill and almost starting civil wars and such.
  • Shutout. The Sounds shut out Albuquerque 2-0 yesterday after pitcher Derrick Turnbow’s completely stellar performance on the mound. Turnbow, whose ERA at the beginning of the season was a cringe-worthy 54.00 (how does that even happen?) lowered it to 8.14 with last night’s game well-pitched.
  • Bits & pieces. MTA reports an increase in public transportation use … Low-income workers and cabbies rally at City Hall Thursday … Metro aims to challenge students with new curriculum … More stores close at Bellevue Mall.

National Doughnut Day: Where No One Really Gives Away Anything

Word on the street is that today is National Doughnut Day, and we just spent a great deal of time researching only to find that no one really celebrates properly. This year, some Krispy Kreme stores are giving away one glazed doughnut to each customer in celebration – But is it just us, or does Krispy Kreme always give away free glazed doughnuts to customers as they walk in? We feel kind of ripped off. And we’d rather go to the Donut Den, anyway.

Friday: Oh, We’re Halfway There (CMApocalypse 2008)

The weekend is regularly the most chaotic time to be in downtown Nashville. Add 200,000 tourists, some pretty big road closures, and hundreds of country artists to the mix… And well, we’re staying holed up in Green Hills. For those brave enough to trickle downtown, you will be richly rewarded with the best that the CMA Music Festival has to offer – They really pull out all the stops over the weekend. So get out there and find us some famous people!

Greased Lightning Riverfront Daytime Stages: More than 100 artists will perform over the next few days on the riverfront stages. Single day passes are $16 (and kids under 6 are free with a paying adult).

Nightly Concerts On The VAULT Concert Stage At LP Field: Product placement, anyone? It’s all good, because we love us some free sugary energy drinks. The biggest country music stars perform each night, and it’ll cost you $30-$40. You may want to pick one night instead of all four. The remaining three nights schedules are:

  • Friday (7:45 PM) – Ashton Shepherd, Jack Ingram, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Josh Turner, Jake Owen, and Faith Hill.
  • Saturday (7:45 PM) – Jason Michael Carroll, Craig Morgan, Little Big Town, Jamey Johnson, Rodney Atkins, Darryl Worley, Trace Adkins, Alan Jackson, and Kenny Rogers.
  • Sunday (7:45 PM) – Chuck Wicks, James Otto, Bucky Covington, Randy Travis, John Stephan, Sara Evans, Billy Ray Cyrus, Phil Stacey, and Dwight Yoakam.

Celebrity Sports Challenge Presented By Glaceau VitaminWater: Featuring enough C-list celebrities to make our heads spin. But they threw some Titans players into the mix, so head to the Chevy SportsZone on Friday at 11am to catch celebrities competing against… More celebrities.

CMA Music Festival BBQ Championship: Now, it’s not a very well kept secret that 50% of Nashvillest really likes BBQ. The other 50% says that she can enjoy hauling downtown for it on Saturday. Teams will compete in the SportsZone on Saturday and the judging will happen on Sunday. (11:30am-5pm; 11:30am-3pm Sunday) and the winner takes home a serious bag of cash.

CBR RFD-TV Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge: On Saturday from 11am-12pm in the SportsZone, brave (or brainless) country artists can try their hands at bull riding. We’re glad it’s only an hour, for their sake.

3rd Annual New Holland/Michael Peterson Celebrity Tractor Race: We won’t be missing this one, that’s for sure. Sunday at 11:30am, watch country artists navigate obstacle courses – while driving a tractor.

Chevy Plaza Concerts: We like these because they’re free. 11ish-4ish every day, you’ll get free live music (some of the names may surprise you).

Hard Rock Outdoor Stages: We covered these on Thursday, but just to be clear: They’re still running and they’re still free.

ABC Block Party: 1pm-5pm on Saturday in the FamilyZone. An amped-up version of what is already happening in the FamilyZone, with some names you may recognize from network giant ABC.

Fiesta Celebrity Grilling Challenge: 2pm-4pm in the SportsZone. Local chefs & business owners will pair up with, well, celebrities. To grill. No word on if fans and bystanders will get to eat what they grill, but we’ll take the gamble.

FREE MCDONALDS: You don’t even have to buy a medium drink. At 11:30am on Sunday in the FamilyZone, McDonalds is providing the first 500 people with a free “picnic,” which really means a free sandwich. You can eat them on the ground and call it a picnic, we suppose.
