Hermitage Hotel: We Win With Our Urinals

We remember being a little taken aback when we first heard we could actually take a tour of the men’s restroom at the historic Hermitage Hotel. Why in the world would we want to do that? Well, apparently it’s in the running to be America’s Best Restroom of 2008. If you skipped the tour like we did and you’re dying to know what could possibly warrant an award like that, head over to the America’s Best Restroom site and take the virtual tour. You can also cast a vote if you’re into that sort of thing. The winning restroom will get a plaque and a spot in the Best Restroom Hall of Fame.

And if that isn’t reason enough to pay a visit to the Hermitage, they’re giving away gas cards to everyone who books a stay there between June and September. And if you’ve got one of those spiffy hybrids that make us really jealous, you can also get free valet parking.

Happy Hour: The Wheels On The Bus

  • Chris Cagle is at least one person who won’t be participating in the CMA festivities. Instead, he’ll be making an appearance in court about the alleged hitting-the-girlfriend-in-the-face-with-her-purse thing that he was arrested for last week. [WSMV]
  • A Greyhound bus on its way to Nashville flipped over on southbound I-65 in Indiana, sending its 42 passengers to the hospital. 25 were injured, and fortunately none of the injuries were life-threatening. The Tennessean is reporting that the driver fell asleep at the wheel. [Tennessean]
  • Breaking: Mike Curb’s house is really big. [Pith In The Wind]
  • The best part about school being out is that we don’t have to deal with the 15-mph school zones. Metro police want to warn you, though, that 9 of them will be remaining active: Bodeaux, Buena Vista, Caldwell, Fall Hamilton, Glenn, Kirkpatrick, Napier, Park Avenue, and Warner elementary schools. So unless you really want a ticket, make sure you slow down.  [WSMV]

Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth Goes To The Opera

We realize we’re a little behind on this one, but this is a story we couldn’t pass up and it was news to us. An Italian composer is in the process of turning Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth documentary into an opera. He’s actually been working on it for a year already, but won’t be presenting it until 2011. The film and book will be transformed into a story that’s told from different characters’ perspectives and get this: Al Gore’s character is totally going to be in it. We can’t imagine what that’s going to look or sound like, but man are we ever curious.

Photo Of The Day: ‘Johnny’

One of our favorite things to see in our pool are portraits. After all, Nashville wouldn’t be Nashville without the people (and canines) that live here. Though we’ve all probably experienced that special kind of road rage from getting stuck behind a horse-drawn carriage downtown, we can’t help but love them. And we really can’t help but love Adam Douglas‘ capture of this guy and his dog who are just moseyin’ along and well, being Nashville.

Just a reminder: We’ve come across some great photos in the pool that we can’t use due to privacy settings that keep us from downloading or linking them. If you’d like to see your photos on Nashvillest, check your account settings under “Privacy & Permissions” and make sure you’ve set it to allow anyone or any Flickr user to download your photos. Keep up the great work!

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Tuesday: The Invasion Begins (CMApocalypse 2008)

CMA is right when they claim to be the “four day festival that takes seven days to get it all in.” The fun starts this afternoon at 3:30pm with the AristoMedia Global Showcase at The Second Fiddle downtown. (And yes, we know the fun actually started last night at the 5th Annual CMA Global Artist Party, but we missed it.) Showcasing artists include Victoria Banks, Jason Blaine, Adam Harvey, Jetty Road, Tracy Killeen, Amber Nicholson, Felicity Urquhart, and Mark Wells. This event is free and open to the public.

The Porter Wagoner Memorial Fishing Tournament is also today at Percy Priest Lake, and 28 pairs of country stars and fishing anglers will be competing. You can attend the weigh-in for free at 5pm at the Opry Mills Bass Pro shop, followed by an acoustic concert and a fundraising auction.

Bright & Early: Calm Before The Storm Edition

Good morning, Nashville. CMA kicked off its festivities with a rousing bowling tournament yesterday at a bowling alley in Hermitage. The ladies and gents of Lady Antebellum and Lonestar were really strutting their stuff in the first official event of the festival, which doubled as a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. Fans who’d rolled into town early were able to grab photos with the bands and have their CDs/posters/shirts/foreheads autographed before the other 199,900 fans get here, which will probably start happening today. We hate to admit it, but we’re kind of excited. We secretly do love sharing our city, because let’s face it–we have a lot to be proud of.

  • Women’s NCAA coming to Nashville? Speaking of things to be proud of, our very own Sommet Center may be one of the hosts for the final-four women’s NCAA tournaments if our bid is approved. We were one of 12 cities to put in for it, and if we get it, we’ll be hosting it any time between 2012 and 2016. We had no idea they planned that far ahead, but we’re still pretty pumped!
  • More mixed reviews. The lists just keep coming. Vanderbilt’s Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital has been named one of the best children’s hospitals in the country.
  • Bits & pieces. Elvis backup singer Hugh Jarrett and rock ‘n’ roll founding father Bo Diddly have both pass away … Sounds end their losing streak with a 5-2 win over Iowa … More trouble on the horizon for Pacman … Metro Assistance Committee running short on cash … West Trinity Lane Ponderosa shut down for health violations.
