Happy Hour: Strange Things Afoot
- We don’t know about you, but we sure haven’t forgotten about the Davidson County Election Commission’s security slip over the winter. In case you don’t remember, a couple of laptops were stolen out of the Election Commission’s office containing the social security numbers and private data of all the county’s registered voters. The city is now asking for $840K from the security contractors in charge at the time of the theft to cover all the identity-theft prevention coverage they had to buy for us. [Tennessean]
- In honor of Michelle Obama’s visit to Nashville tonight, the Tennessee Republican Party has thrown together a warm video welcome, which you might have seen running around on the internet today. And by warm, we mean not really warm at all. [YouTube]
- Congrats to our friends at TennViews/KnoxViews who were chosen to represent Tennessee as the official liveblogging ambassadors to the Democratic National Convention. [TennViews]
- Two men were carjacked on their way out of Church Street club Play last night. The carjackers made them drive to TSU, where both men managed to escape but had to leave their car behind. So if you see a 2004 four-door Oldsmobile Alera with Tennessee tags (726-SJG), call it in, because they would like their their car back. [WSMV]
- Five train cars carrying ethanol derailed in West Nashville last night. We’re happy to tell you that no one was hurt and the ethanol didn’t spill. [WTVF]

Calling All Photographers: Capture Music City
By the looks of the Nashvillest Flickr pool, we have a lot of talented photographers out there in Music City. That’s why we want to tell you about a great contest sponsored by the Tennessean for all of our Nashvillian shutterbugs. Here’s how it works: You go out and take some pictures, create a profile, and post some of your best shots on the contest’s website. The rest of us go there and vote for our favorites, and the best will be published in the Capture Music City coffee table book. The Tennessean calls it “collaborative publishing,” but we just think it’s a great idea.
They’re looking for photos that fit into any of the eight chapters: People, Nature, Sports & Recreation, Pets & Animals, Newsworthy, Simply Nashville, and Celebrations. Outside of being published, there are some other prizes (we’re talking gift certificates) being given away in each category for Editor’s Choice, Concensus Best, and Ninth Best. “Why ninth place?” they say, “We’ve all seen the first-place, blue, fancy-pants ribbon, and the second-place one, and third, and fourth, and so on. … But we’ve never seen a ninth-place ribbon. Have you?”
So grab your cameras and hit the town. You’ve got three months to hone your craft, and the clock is already ticking. Congrats to some of our own Flickr contributors who we recognize in there already: Chris Wage, Josh Hunter, and Richard Call. Head over there and show them some love.
Good luck, Nashville!

Almost Friday: Thirsty Thursdays at Greer Stadium
Needing something to help you ring in the weekend a day early? Every Thursday when they’re home, the Nashville Sounds and the Miller Lite Concert Series host Thirsty Thursdays at Greer Stadium. Concert starts at 6 (we’re not sure who’s playing), game at 7, and $1 draft beer until 8:30 or the 5th inning–whichever comes first. It might be a little wet tonight, but The Weather Channel is predicting the rain will have mostly moved out by this evening with a few leftover storms possible. Either way, you win- baseball, cheap beer, and plenty of good times. Hopefully the Sounds win too since we hear they’re in last place.

Photo Of The Day: Fido
We at Nashvillest have been pretty taken with Fido since we moved to Nashville. You can count on us being there at least once a week blogging, playing a rowdy game of cards, or hitting up our friends’ art openings. We think it’s pretty neat that it used to be a pet shop with a lot of history, but we think it’s neater that they serve up some incredible (organic fair trade!) beverages. Anyway! We loved this photo for Fido of course, but even more for its funky colors and creative composition that throws together the old and the new–something that Nashville’s really good at. So our hats are off to WJ11 for tossing this in our pool.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest†if you’re feeling lazy.

Weekend Edition: Pirates of Davidson County
We’re excited that the weekend is finally rolling in, but we’re also overwhelmed. There’s a lot going on, and it’s all worth hitting up. We’re a little depressed because the 3rd Annual Great Nashville Race costs $30, but it’s still our top pick for Saturday.
“No longer will the Great Nashville escapades be limited to the streets of downtown! This year, teams will have to scour multiple destinations all across Greater Nashville solving riddles, cracking codes, outwitting adversaries and cursing the gods.”
Can you blame us? But if you can’t swing the big bucks for a mysterious scavenger hunt, never fear. There are plenty of other great options, and free entertainment is one of our highest priorities at Nashvillest.
FRIDAY
- Day 2 of the 59th Annual Franklin Rodeo, 7pm: The rodeo actually starts today, so we hope you’re paying attention.
- Merrell Crawfish Boil Nashville, 4:30pm: The Crawfish Boil starts Friday, and it’s kind of a big deal. Between big name bands like Three Doors Down, New Found Glory, Papa Roach and hometown heroes Paramore, it’s probably worth the $20/day. If you know you’ll be eating a lot, grab a VIP pass for $50 – it includes free crawfish.
SATURDAY
- Improv Nashville Free Workshop, 1pm: Only offered five times a year, free improv basics that will have you as witty as Drew Carey in no time.
- 5th Annual Tour de Nash, all day: We must have been living under a rock for the past 5 years, but this year we’re crawling out. Head down to East Bank Greenway between 7am and 5pm for the health festival and to walk or bike Nashville’s growing network of sidewalks, bikeways, and greenways.
- Nashville Sounds Go Green, 6pm: Our hometown heroes are setting aside an entire game night to share their involvement in environmental awareness, special green jerseys and all. Nashvillest runs on green power too… Do you?
- Tour 4 Cure, 7pm: Recording artists The Readings are hosting a nationwide tour of Borders stores, raising awareness and funding for a presently incurable form of cancer, Multiple Myeloma.
- Nashville Rollergirls vs. the B-Funk Allstars, 7pm: If you’re not familiar with rollerderby, it isn’t for the faint of heart. Despite the 3-game losing streak, it’s sure to be an experience you won’t forget. Tennessee Fair Grounds, $15 at the door.
- Laura Veirs with Liam Finn, 9pm: This one is going to be good. Enough said. The Basement, $12.
SUNDAY
- Mamapalooza Murfreesboro, 6pm: No one said Mother’s Day was over! Join Artsy Mamas for a “Mama of the Year” award, door prizes, skits, monologues, musical acts, vendors and more. $8 at the door.
- Dragon Music Sunday, 3pm: This week marks the first of many free music Sundays in Dragon Park (also known as Fannie Mae Dees Park). Local entertainment and plenty of space for kids to play.
- Nashville Symphony in Crockett Park, 7pm: It’s not every day that we get to see the Nashville Symphony for free, so we’re all over this.

Bright & Early: We Could Ride Horses Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Someone at MTA is having the Best Week Ever, after a bus driver fell asleep at the wheel yesterday and ran into a parked car off of Shelby Avenue in East Nashville. Three people were taken to the hospital including the driver, but everyone seems to be okay. Remind us sometime to tell you the story about how Nashvillest once saw someone get hit by an MTA bus at Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day. In other words, we’re huge fans. On a related note, the Tennessean reports that Nashville may cut seven bus routes after it’s already raising its fares by 15 cents. Maybe if our buses ran more often and on time, we’d consider them a viable form of transportation.
- Tax-Free Day Facing Extinction. We can handle the landscaping budget being cut, but in their latest efforts to deal with the revenue shortage, Tennessee lawmakers have opted to drop the spring sales tax holiday. The back-to-school weekend (August 2-3) is safe, though. For now.
- And Again! Members of the Tennessee National Guard are on alert for their third deployment back to Iraq.
- Monsooooon. Lots of rain in the forecast for today, with as much as 3 inches likely for the southern counties. As usual, the weather service offers you this helpful advice: “TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN if you approach a roadway covered with water.” We can handle that.
- Bits & Pieces. Our neighbors up in Kentucky have broken the Diet Coke and Mentos world record for the most simultaneous eruptions … President Bush is president of the Internets after giving exclusive online interviews to Yahoo and Politico … The “I don’t give a s****” that was heard around the world (or at least around Nashville) … Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” added to the Library of Congress.
