Weekend Edition: It Only Gets Better From Here

Nashville Zombie Walk

Here at Nashvillest, we think Thursday is the perfect time to bring you our weekend picks. We like to think of it as giving you a head start. Who doesn’t like a long weekend? Particularly if it includes… Zombies?

FRIDAY

  • Films At The Frist, 7pm – The Frist Center is showing the film Lust For Life (NR) for free on Friday evening.
  • Tango By Moonlight, 7pm – Friday also kicks off Tango Nashville‘s free summer tango festivities in Centennial Park. Features live music, performances and an introductory lesson.
  • Dual Record Release: AutoVaughn & De Novo Dahl, 9pm – Local favorites AutoVaughn and De Novo Dahl are releasing new records this week. The double whammy is at The Cannery Ballroom and costs $10 at the door. Oh, and has anyone heard of The Pink Spiders? Good, because they’re opening. If you ask us, that’s quite the bit of local big-name bang for your buck.

SATURDAY

  • Vanderbilt and Belmont Graduations, all day - We recommend you stay far away from both of these campuses and the surrounding hotels and restaurants if you’re planning a casual day on the town. May we suggest Google Maps to plot out your detour of choice? All the same, our hats are off to you, grads!
  • World Fair Trade Day, all day - Join our local Ten Thousand Villages to celebrate World Fair Trade Day. There will be free chocolate – fair trade, of course. We don’t need another reason to make it our first stop on Saturday.
  • Iroqois Steeplechase, 1pm – General Admission tickets to the annual Steeplechase are still available ($15). The hill opens at 8, but the first race isn’t until 1. Make this a group outing and pack a picnic! This year the festivities benefit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
  • Nashville Zombie Walk, 6pm – Ah, yes. What would a weekend list be without your everyday, typical zombie walk? If you plan on participating (we’re tempted), show up at Riverfront Park at 5. Otherwise, get down there by 6 and take some pictures for our Nashvillest flickr pool!

SUNDAY

  • Devotchka, 9pm – Think Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack if the name doesn’t sound familiar. Devotchka will be bringing the gypsy rock to The Mercy Lounge on Sunday night. $20 at the door.

It’s a good time to be a Nashvillian.

All Geared Up: Bike to Work Tomorrow

With gas prices going up by the day, it’s a great chance to find some other ways to get to work. Fortunately Walk/Bike Nashville and Lightning 100′s Team Green have us covered with tomorrow’s Bike-to-Work Day event for all of you who work downtown. Ride leaders will depart from a few different meeting places around town between 6:15 and 7:15am and arrive at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center around 7:30am. City leaders, including Mayor Dean, will be there taking advantage of the free food and giving you tips on how to green your commute. No registration required, but helmets are a must. Check Walk/Bike Nashville for locations and meeting times.

Happy Hour: Bigger Fish to Fry

  • It’s been a rough one out there today, Nashville, but it looks like the worst storms are on their way out. Hopefully you weren’t blown away like our neighbors in Spring Hill. Channel 4 is reporting that a tornado took out a gas station near Hwy. 31 this morning. No injuries were reported. [WSMV]
  • In light of all the job-slicing, the Tennessean has released a list of the highest-paid Metro employees, most of whom seem to be on Nashville Electric Service’s payroll. We’re happy to hear someone’s benefiting from the high gas prices. [Tennessean]
  • Police and school officials locked down Park Avenue Elementary School in West Nashville after a man robbed a nearby car lot at gunpoint this afternoon. The suspect was believed to be the same man who came into the business asking for a job earlier this morning and is still on the run. [Tennessean]
  • A Murfreesboro man pulled a record-breaking 63-pound catfish out of Percy Priest Lake early this morning. After lugging the beast into Kroger to verify the weight, he released it back into the lake and declared that they only taste good if they’re between 2 and 8 pounds. Some stories actually do have happy endings. Also, there are pictures. [Tennessean]
  • By now, you’ve probably heard that we lost a legend this morning. Country Music Hall of Famer Eddy Arnold, 89, passed away at a Williamson County nursing home this morning. He was a little before our time, but we hear he paved the way for some of the newer country we actually like. We’ll drink to that. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: Urban Unrest Edition

Good morning, Nashville. It turns out our homeless were busy yesterday, marching through downtown and taking over an abandoned HUD home near Dickerson Road. The group, led by local nonprofit Nashville Homeless Power Project, were trying to make the point that houses shouldn’t be empty when people are living on the streets. Unfortunately the folks at Housing and Urban Development didn’t see it that way and had three people arrested and cited for trespassing, including NHPP’s Program Director Jeannie Alexander. Brian Sullivan, a spokesman for HUD’s office in Washington, DC told the Tennessean, “It’s a point we appreciate but we don’t advocate breaking the law to do it.” The group is already planning another demonstration for May 28th to defend Wednesday’s actions.

  • Job cuts for Metro: While Gov. Phil Bredesen was busy slicing 2000 jobs from the state budget yesterday, Mayor Karl Dean’s plan for the Metro budget could put nearly 200 Nashvillians out of work.
  • Trouble in Paradise: Two employees were robbed at gunpoint at a west Nashville Pizza Hut overnight. The suspects, who are still on the run, are said to have approached the workers as they took out the trash behind the restaurant wearing camouflage masks. Original!
  • Bits and Pieces: Funding for the new Sounds stadium is delayed in the House … Giant flashing LED church signs placed on Nashville’s “endangered” list … Man sends 5-year old nephew to school with cocaine and marijuana in East Nashville … Vandy extends winning streak to 5 with a 7-2 win over Tennessee Tech.
