- Welcome to CMApocalypse Week! The various events start today and runs through Sunday. ICYMI, we’ve got your bingo board. May the odds be ever in your favor.
- An ambitious series of “green energy” bills passed in the Metro Council Tuesday night will have the city running on 100 percent renewable energy by 2041 and all of its fleet vehicles by 2050. The bills also require energy efficient standards for city government construction projects.
- News Channel 5 changed their Twitter avatar to a rainbow colored version for PRIDE, and promptly changed it back after being attacked online for the move, claiming it was never approved by station management. Weirdly, WSMV has changed theirs without fanfare. ?
- Mayor David Briley announced a study commission Monday of the city’s fines and fees in the criminal justice system, saying that the current system unfairly penalizes marginalized groups. People unable to pay the fines often face secondary penalties, such as losing their driver’s license.
- Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines will be expanding service in and out of Nashville the company announced at a Monday press conference, with new flights to Baltimore, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Fort Lauderdale. Service begins in October, with a Tampa route added in November.
- A 20-minute delay in responding to a potential hazardous materials call at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution has prompted city officials to review the dispatch process between the Metro Office of Emergency Communication and the Nashville Fire Department. The specialized process for hazmat cases was designed to avoid a public panic.
- Butch Spyridon, the head of Nashville Visitors & Convention Corp., says that he agrees with the mayor’s call to drastically change the way scooter companies operate in the city or to outright ban them. He says without new regulations, “they are a public danger and an eyesore.”
- Twelve “scooter corrals” are being installed around the city to help that process along, though it is unclear if riders will follow the guidelines. ?
- Restaurant and lounge Flyte in the Gulch is calling it quits after more than a decade, citing the difficulties of rising rents and costs and the departure of its head chef for Florida. The final day is set for June 22.
- There’s also a new wings mural in the Gulch.
- Your evening newscasts and Instagram feed are about to get inundated with television ads for the four candidates vying for mayor of Nashville. This will likely continue through election day on August 1.
- James Shaw, Jr., the man credited with saving lives at last year’s shooting at a Waffle House in Antioch, was selected to fly along with the Navy’s Blue Angels at the Great Tennessee Air Show in Smyrna. The aerial performers are returning to Tennessee for the first time since squadron member Capt. Jeff Kuss was killed in a crash there in 2016.
- A headline blared that Nashville is among the worst bed bug infested cities in the country, raking it 18th on the list. The report was, go figure, sponsored by a pest control company. ?
