• Tonight is a win-or-go-home game for the Nashville Predators if they hope to continue on in the Stanley Cup Playoffs after a forgettable 6-2 loss at home in Game 5 against the Winnipeg Jets. They play at 8:30 p.m. tonight in Winnipeg (NBCSN), with Game 7 set for 7 p.m. Wednesday Thursday in Nashville if necessary.
• In spite of the result, there was a heartwarming story about a five year-old boy who received a heart transplant at Vanderbilt who fulfilled his dream of tossing a catfish on the ice at Bridgestone prior to the game.
• A former sergeant who had worked for 16 years for the Metro Nashville Police Department has been indicted or allegedly stealing more than $100,000 from cash seized in narcotic arrests, using the money to buy an SUV. He was arrested after another officer reported him pocketing money, and a sting operation recorded him placing $5,800 in cash after a bust.
• In a separate case, a MNPD segeant was arrested for allegedly pointing his weapon at a subordinate and demanding to know what happened at a meeting he missed.
• The mayor’s State of Metro Address is usually an upbeat affair, but this year event on Friday at the downtown public library was remarkably different after scandal, the transit plan’s referendum loss and upcoming budget shortfalls. Mayor David Briley said tough decisions were ahead for city leaders.
• The mayor’s office also invited citizens to prepare their own version of the budget through a web-based tool that allows users to adjust allocations to budget categories. You can submit your version through May 17.
• WSMV got a lot of attention Friday for recapping the end result of a council resolution that diverted money from 2010 flood relief to a fund that eventually was used to build Ascend Amphitheater. Some members of council now say that they had no idea that was what was happening with the money when they voted for it.
• In the middle of a budget crunch, the mayor has told city employees that the three percent raise promised by the Metro Council may not happen this year after all. There would be a smaller increase to offset increased insurance costs.
• Besty Phillips at the Nashville Scene offers some lessons learned from the transit vote, saying that not all of them have anything to do with transit specifically. The referendum failed 64 percent “against” to 36 percent “for.”
• The Tennessee State Museum, currently located in the basement at TPAC, hosted its final day of operation Saturday before beginning the move to its new location next to the Nashville Farmer’s Market at Bicentennial Mall. The new facility is much larger than the current space.
• A proposed land-swap deal with developer Tony Giarratana and the mayor’s office has angered advocates for the homeless that say the proposed eight-story apartment building is insufficient to meet the needs of the community and heavily favors the developer. In exchange for the building, Giarratana would get the a coveted piece of property across from the downtown public library.
• Following his appearance on “Ellen”, television personality Steve Harvey rewarded Waffle House shooting hero James Shaw, Jr. with a trip to Barbados for him and his daughter.
• Belmont University presented a diploma to one of the shooting victim’s mother this past Saturday at the university’s spring commencement. DeEbony Groves was 21.
• Bob Dylan (yes, that one) is set to open a downtown whiskey distillery called “Heaven’s Door” that will feature a “brand experience center.” In our day, we just called that a tasting room, but whatever.
• The former dean of a private school that collided with a cyclist while driving on the Natchez Trace Parkway last year and then drove away will plead guilty. The incident was caught on camera by another cyclist.
