- Nashville Mayor John Cooper made headlines Friday promising a substantial property tax decrease following a year where taxes increased by as much as 30 percent. Observers were quick to note that this would already happen because state law that prohibits tax revenue from exceeding the year prior in an assessment year, and that the rate percentage isn’t the same thing as the amount due.
- The group aiming to change the way the city goes about setting the tax rate is back via a referendum in front of the Davidson County Election Commission with a petition, though there are several issues that may keep it from ever making it to the ballot.
- Metro Parks is soliciting feedback on renaming Hadley Park in North Nashville to honor Kwame Leo Lillard, a local civil rights activist who died in December. Records are unclear on who the city was honoring by naming it Hadley Park, but there is reason to believe it might named after a slaveholder.
- Several of Nashville’s record labels released a letter opposing a recent string of laws targeting the LGBTQ+ community, saying they want the state to be “welcoming and economically vibrant.”
- Athens Family Restaurant in the Melrose neighborhood is looking for a new location after the property owner terminated their lease to make way for a mixed use development. It had been at its location for 16 years.
- Short-term parking at BNA is increasing, with some of the transportation companies saying it will hurt their already struggling business.
- Also, American Airlines is adding two new non-stop flights out of Nashville to Orlando and Raleigh-Durham.
- The Metro Health Department will look to fill up to 500 vaccine slots per day without an appointment starting today. Seriously, go get your shot.
- The Barnes & Noble on West End will be changing hands on June 1 after Vanderbilt University opted not to renew their contract with the company. A national college bookseller will take over.
- The Nashville Predators (24-21-1) lost a pair of games to the Carolina Hurricanes (29-10-4) 4-1 on Thursday and 3-1 on Saturday, a substantial setback in their quest to snag the fourth and final playoff spot. The team’s next three games are against the Chicago Blackhawks (21-19-5) starting tonight and are likely to determine their season’s fate.
- Nashville SC (0-0-1) fought back to a 2-2 draw against FC Cincinnati (0-0-1) Saturday in their season opener at Nissan Stadium. They next host the Montreal Impact (1-0-0) on Saturday.
- Speaking of Nashville SC, the team offered a glimpse at the progress on their new stadium at Fairgrounds Nashville.
- Soccer and football fans will be able to use contactless payment for concessions, tickets and merchandise at Nissan Stadium this year.
- Fisk University received a half million dollar grant to expand its art galleries, with the funding going towards staffing a curator, registrar, and gallery coordinators.
- A tattoo shop that has been closed since the Christmas Day bombing (edit: remember that?) has finally reopened. The owner elected to move to a new location on Rep. John Lewis Way S.
- The trash that wound up in Mill Creek was from a company’s warehouse affected by the flooding, with the owner vowing to help get the debris taken care of.
- And finally, you won’t have to hunt down the Retro Sno truck this summer, with the company stationing one of its three trucks in the Nations.
