- Activists shut down parts of Lower Broadway Friday night to support a Community Oversight Board that they say would hold the police department accountable. The group is attempting to get 6,000 registered Davidson County voters to a sign a petition by August 2 to hold a charter amendment vote after efforts to pass a measure through Metro Council failed earlier this year.
- With the school year around the corner, a new law requiring the state’s public schools to display “In God We Trust” somewhere within clear view of students will take effect, though the move is not without controversy. School administrators are left to determine how to best comply with the law.
- A North Nashville woman says that she was protecting her children when she shot her boyfriend in the leg Saturday night. The children were also treated for injuries.
- The family of one of the victims of April’s attack at an Antioch area Waffle House is suing both the alleged gunman and his father in civil court, saying that the latter did not do enough to protect the public.
- A Guatemalan mother caught in the middle of the current dispute at the southern border over separating families seeking asylum was reunited with her 11 year-old daughter at the Nashville International Airport Friday evening. After being separated for more than a month, the pair are now staying with relatives in Middle Tennessee.
- The Donelson location of a local pet groomer and boarder has again been accused of negligence of an animal in their care. The dog’s owners say that they believe the animal was seriously injured in a fall from a table, and later had to be euthanized.
- The Interstate overpass damaged when a large piece of construction equipment struck it in April has been repaired. It required two separate projects to complete the repair.
- The Nashville Scene takes a look at the Metro Council’s consolidation of agencies that work with Nashville’s homeless population. The moveĀ is aimed to improve the efficiencies by not passing cases between separate organizations for healthcare and finding housing.
- WPLN has a guide for the less-publicized School Board races in Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8 by summarizing the candidates’ priorities for Metro Nashville Public Schools. Early voting started this past Friday and runs through Saturday, July 28 before the Thursday, August 2 election.
- A man allegedly drunk on mouthwash was found unconscious on Broadway Thursday after falling out of his wheel chair. He was cited for public intoxication and blocking the sidewalk.
