- Metro schools has already burned four of the five allocated snow days for the year, with more winter weather possible in the coming weeks. Students could be told to report to class March 16, May 29, May 30, or May 31 as potential make-up days.
- Sides are staking positions on the expected May 1 transit referendum, with a lot of heavyweight players (read: money) preparing to blitz the airwaves and internet. Expect to be very happy May 2 has rolled around.
- The NoTax4Tracks political action committee (got to hand it to them, they made it rhyme) will be fronted by guy-with-a-car-dealership Lee Beaman and former-mayoral-candidate-with-the-weirdest-ad-ever David Fox. Beaman has a mixed record on public policy involvement, with his successful blocking of mayor Karl Dean’s Amp Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project and a loss in 2009’s defeated “English Only” referendum.
- Two controversial bills were delayed at the legislature this week, with one attempting to roll back the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage and another aimed at which bathroom a person must use based on their biological sex. Both were expected to trigger federal funding cuts and lawsuits if passed.
- Two alleged burglars in West Nashville learned the hard way yesterday morning that it is difficult to make a clean getaway when your car is stuck in the snow. One of the suspects is still at large.
- The Metro Nashville Police Department has published an online report of all 107 murder victims in Nashville in 2017. The majority (89) were classified as shootings.
- The Nashville Predators (26-11-6) earned their first victory in franchise history over the upstart Vegas Golden Knights (29-11-3) Tuesday in a 0-1 shutout, but have lost forwards Viktor Arvidsson and Ryan Johansen to injury. They return to action to host the Arizona Coyotes (10-28-8) tonight and the Florida Panthers (18-19-6) on Saturday.
- The Metro Council’s highly anticipated meeting was postponed Tuesday because of snow, citing members’ inability to travel safely to downtown. The rescheduled meeting will take place next Tuesday, January 23.
- A North Nashville man learned the very hard way not to attempt to thaw his pipes with a blowtorch. The house was destroyed in the ensuing fire, but no one was injured.
- Be careful driving this weekend as the weather warms up and (more) potholes start showing up on roadways.
- If you have not yet received your flu shot for the year, the Metro Health Department is administering the vaccination for free at their three community clinics while supplies last. ?
- Tennessee Secretary of State Trey Hargrett assured officials Tuesdays that voting records and results were safe from tampering, but that more vigilance is necessary for the growing threat. Tennessee currently ranks last in the country in voter turnout per capita.
- PSA: If your trash wasn’t picked up Monday (holiday), Tuesday (snow), or Wednesday (snow), public works will be taking care of it over the weekend.
