- More than 100 young people traveled to Washington DC last week to meet with members of congress as part of a delegation to advocate for the DREAM Act and to restore protections under DACA. Among the group were three Nashville area folks, including a Trevecca student facing an uncertain future.
- Lots of shuffling in next year’s political races, with U.S. Senator Bob Corker (TN) announcing his retirement in 2018. Sen. Corker also says that the President may very well start World War III. How’s that for a light news Monday?
- Rep. Marsha Blackburn (TN-7) has said she will run for Corker’s seat while Governor Bill Haslam says he will not. (This is a lot to keep up with.)
- Nashville will begin accepting food waste for composting at two of its convenience centers as part of a effort to reduce the amount that ends up in landfills.
- A woman jogging in Shelby Bottoms Park in East Nashville Saturday morning was held up at knife-point but was able to escape without injury. Bystanders detained the suspect until police arrived.
- The Nashville Predators (0-2) saw their comeback come up short against the Boston Bruins (1-0) Thursday to open their season. The Stanley Cup Final rematch against the Pittsburgh Penguins (1-1) ended in a 0-4 loss Saturday night. The Preds open their home stand (and raise the Western Conference Champions banner!) at 7 p.m. tomorrow night at Bridgestone Arena against the Philadelphia Flyers (2-1).
- The Tennessee Titans (2-3) dropped a road game 16-10 against the Miami Dolphins (2-2) with QB Marcus Mariota sidelined with injury. The Titans will next play the Indianapolis Colts (2-3) on Monday Night Football at 7:30 p.m. October 16 at Nissan Stadium.
- Vanderbilt football (3-3) extended their three-game slide with a loss against Georgia (6-0) 45-14 on Saturday in Nashville. They face Ole Miss (2-3) next Saturday in Oxford.
- A man was arrested in Gallatin after entering a Sprint store and claiming to have been sent to Nashville from Las Vegas by the devil, prompting nearby Volunteer State Community College to be placed on lockdown. What the — we can’t even.
- UpWorthy (yeah, yeah we know) put together an interesting profile on Chuck Anderson who runs the “Death from a Bun” food truck and the food service at East Nashville’s Rosemary & Beauty Queen.
- The first organizer of a LGBT pride parade in Nashville will be honored with a historical marker at the site of her home in East Nashville. Penny Campbell, who died in 2014, was also a plaintiff in a court case that decriminalized homosexual acts in Tennessee.
- The body of Sonny Melton, a Tennessee man who died in last week’s Las Vegas concert shooting, arrived in Nashville on Saturday. The Big Sandy, Tennessee native was 29.
- And finally, about a dozen homeless animals rescued from flooding in the Carribean have arrived in Lebanon, Tennessee.
