Happy Hour: Smooth Sailing
- About 8,500 people were stuck without power in Franklin this afternoon after a bird got into a fight with a substation and lost. [WSMV]
- Following some controversy about a certain per diem pay raise granted to our beloved state lawmakers, Rep. Judy Barker became the first one to actually turn it down. [WTVF]
- Governor Phil got a little defensive when a legislator mouthed off about a proposal to start creating biofuels out of East Tennessee’s switchgrass. [Tennessean]
- TSU and the local Nation of Islam chapter are both trying to figure out who started the rumor about NoI providing free additional security on campus. The news came in an announcement by TSU, which made headlines, but NoI insisted that was the first they’d heard of it. [Tennessean]
- Metro Police say that the ATM skimming operation we heard about last week has now resulted in around $270,000 stolen. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Paper Trails Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Despite a major setback in court this week, the fight continues for the statewide implementation of voter-verified paper ballots. Under the Tennessee Voter Confidence Act, all voting machines statewide are supposed to make the switch to the more reliable paper ballots and advocacy group Common Cause tried to file an injunction this week to ensure that the switch would happen by the 2010 elections. The injunction was denied, but the group may have a few more tricks up its sleeve as the year comes to a close.
- How much do we love the IRS. What better way to start the weekend than by finding out the IRS owes you money? Nearly 2,000 people still haven’t claimed their 2008 tax returns, so the agency has published a searchable list of names online.
- Gross alternative fuels. This weekend, Nashville is hosting the 11th annual Chem-E-Car competition where college kids can compete and test all sorts of weird alternative fuels like beef liver and beetle enzymes in hopes of eventually uncovering something revolutionary.
- Bits & pieces. In case you missed it yesterday, George Strait needs some extras for his movie next Wednesday … The Preds ended their winning streak yesterday :( … Just a few days after some earthquakes in East Tennessee, West Tennessee got the shakes this morning … Glad we cleared this one up.
