Happy Hour: If A Plane Falls In The Forest
- A small plane crashed about 50 feet from the runway at the Smyrna Airport this afternoon. Though the pilot was able to walk away from the crash, he suffered burns on 20% of his body and is in stable condition at Vandy. [WKRN]
- One week into the semester and some Vandy kids have already tried to burn the place down, with cookies. [WSMV]
- Clifton Harris, director of the Metro Homelessness Commission, was nearly fired today after MDHA discovered a computer securities contract he had administered without going through the proper channels. But because this was his first violation and he has a record of doing some great things for the community, he was only given 90 days probation. [Tennessean]
- Flu vaccines are available starting today across Tennessee several weeks earlier than usual. The CDC wants everyone to get them as soon as they’re available unless you want this to happen to you. [WKRN]
- The Titans cut their roster down to 75 by trading four players: Dudley Guice, Rafael Little, Tyson Smith, and Matt Lehr. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Not For Lack Of Trying Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Since the initial conversations surrounding Metro’s school rezoning plan last year, many folks have been voicing opposition and claiming that the changes will bring segregation back into the school system. For a long time, Metro has been busing kids from North Nashville into West Nashville and Bellevue to balance out the racial diversity in each school, but due to budget constraints, they’ve ended the practice effective this year. The NAACP is finally bringing a civil rights lawsuit against MNPS as they’ve been talking about doing for months. Their first plaintiff is a fifth grade student who was rezoned from Bellevue Middle School to John Early Middle School, which still doesn’t have textbooks available after the first week of school. More plaintiffs are expected to come forward.
- Electric bills not changing, yet. Regardless of whatever you hear about the TVA’s rates going up this month, your electric bill shouldn’t be changing. Rates are going up, but fuel charges are coming down and the two will cancel each other out. Starting in November, they’ll be reviewing fuel charges monthly rather than quarterly, though, so there will likely be some fluctuation.
- Councilwoman in more trouble. East Nashville Councilwoman Pam Murray, whose constituents seem pretty determined to oust her these days, is being accused of yet another ethics violation. This time, the complaint concerns the use of Metro’s money to send out fliers about a community meeting addressing the effort to kick her out of her council seat.
- Bits & pieces. Mt. Juliet has decided to allow guns in parks, but only if schools are not using the parks … New state budget cuts will likely reduce the Department of Children’s Services by 200 personnel, three regional offices, and some mental health and education programs … Metro is demanding its money back from a local domestic violence shelter they say grossly misused grant funding … Pregnant women are being urged to get the H1N1 vaccine.
