Now Taking Submissions: 2009 CMApocalypse Bingo [Nashvillest Contests] [CMApocalypse 2009]

Last year, in what might be our all-time favorite post on Nashvillest, we posted a reader-submitted Fan Fair Bingo card for a little chuckle at the expense of CMA Fest tourists. It’s become nothing short of a legend, but we’re going to try our hands at the impossible and see if we can top it. Well, that’s not entirely accurate. We’re going to see if one of YOU can top it.
Readers, this is where you come in. Send us your best shot at 2009 CMApocalypse Bingo (leave a link in the comments, or email it to tips(at)nashvillest(dot)com. We even have an awesome yet-to-be-determined prize for our winner. Submissions must be in by noon on Wednesday (tomorrow). We’ll post the winner for all to enjoy as the official 2009 bingo card, along with any other submissions that tickle our funny bones. Feel free to use last year’s bingo card as a template.
Disclaimer: We love our tourists, but we need a little fun to get the locals through the week!

Nashville4Prez: Power To The People [Mixed Reviews By People Who DO Live Here]

Have you had enough of those often-absurd-and-contradictory Mixed Reviews By People Who Don’t Live Here? Now we have two opportunities to sound off on our city’s behalf (and show some other cities a bit of friendly competition).
Kiplinger is doing their 2009 Reader’s Choice Best Cities poll, and Lexington has mysteriously arrived at the top of the list with over 6,000 votes that are multiplying like rabbits. Nashville is currently in 5th place, but with a measly 192 votes, we have a long way to go before we pass Lexington, Roanoke, Louisville and Pittsburgh.
Travel & Leisure is also doing a 2009 America’s Favorite Cities poll, and we’re embarrassed to report that we were eliminated in the first round of this bracket-style competition last year. We have until July 31 to make Nashville shine, so no excuses!
Nashville, it’s time to take matters into our own hands. Vote now!

This Weekend: 5th Annual Ellie’s Run For Africa

Nashville has a lot of 5Ks. Nashville has a lot of fundraisers. Nashville also has a lot of 5Ks that are also fundraisers, but something about Ellie’s Run For Africa stands out amidst the noise. It may have something to do with the fact that Ellie, now fifteen, was just ten years old when she dreamed up the idea for giant fundraiser to help families in Africa meet basic needs. Now in its fifth year, Ellie’s Run For Africa is more than just a 5K – It’s an (early morning) day of fun for families with food, music, dancing, games and more.
Advance registration for Ellie’s Run is now closed, but show up bright and early at 6:30am to register on Saturday (and bring the kids for the kiddie fun run too!). 1,000 attendees are expected this year, raising over $100,000. Visit ElliesRun.org for more information.

Tomorrow’s Early Bird Gets The Discount Gift Certificates [Cheap Eats]

We just got our favorite quarterly email – That’s right, it’s time for 2009’s second Nashville Originals discount gift certificates sale! We’ve had several readers wondering when this day would be here, and we’re here to tell you that it has arrived… Almost. Tomorrow morning at the usual undisclosed-but-almost-always-around-6:45am-time, the quarterly click-fest will occur as Nashville foodies (and some cheapskates like us) battle it out for 30-40% discount gift certificates to a long list of our favorite Nashville restaurants. So set the alarms and hang out at EatLikeaLocal.com/Nashville tomorrow morning to snap them all up (leave some for us).

Bright & Early: Like A Tidal Wave Edition
Good morning, Nashville. While we’ve all been tightening our belts a bit over the past year or two, one thing is not suffering a bit in the face of this recession: The CMA Music Festival. Despite the steep-ish price tag and rising travel expenses, officials say that so far the numbers aren’t any lower this year than they’ve been before–or if they are, they say, then Bonnaroo’s overlapping schedule is to blame. Lucky for us, though, this means they’re all starting to pour in a day or two early.
- Mo’ money. In an effort to help improve our city’s current state of broke-ness, Metro is thinking about imposing a $2,500 tax on every hockey player who plays against the Preds, per game, up to $7, 500 per season. Ouch!
- Heh. An adult bookstore on Dickerson Road, The Pleasure Place, is complaining that Metro is being too harsh by suspending their license to operate for 31 days after some nasty things were observed.
- Bits & pieces. If you were in Miley’s fan club, you could be purchasing tickets to her Sommet Center concert right now! … The weirdo who dangled his kid over a bridge to avoid police capture finally turned himself in … Metro’s legal department has crushed our hopes of banning guns in restaurants in Nashville … There’s still hope for the Spring Hill GM plant which may reopen in 8 weeks.
A year ago on Nashvillest: We cried a little bit as gas finally reached $4 in our fair city and shared our gasoline sob stories with Lamar Alexander, started racking our brains for some clever You Are So Nashville If… submissions, and wondered what a military-grade rocket was doing on a golf course in Jackson.
