Happy Hour: Fighting The Good Fight

- Rutherford County has decided to refuse a settlement offer in the Bible Park USA lawsuit. Basically, they’re saying they’ve done nothing wrong by saving Murfreesboro from the Bible-themed amusement park and don’t feel like shelling out a few million bucks to admit defeat. [WTVF]
- The legislature might have declared milk to be our official state beverage, but another bill making the rounds at the Plaza would allow us to produce even more Tennessee whiskey than we already do. [WKRN]
- We know you will all be heartbroken to hear that Phil Vassar is postponing his free show tomorrow at Wildhorse due to inclement weather predictions. Or maybe because he knows that Flight of the Conchords would totally steal his thunder… [Tennessean]
- Even more stimulus money is coming down the pipes for Metro Schools, if they can ever figure out how to handle it. [City Paper]
- BNA is also in line to receive some stimulus money to fix their ramps. [WSMV]
- The Scene’s Pith In The Wind put together a great retrospective on WSMV’s Dan Miller, longtime anchor and friend of the station who passed away unexpectedly yesterday. [Pith In The Wind]
- They be steppin’: MTSU students are now calling for the resignation of the school’s president over recent budget cuts. [WSMV]

Roller derby is back in town! On Saturday, the Nashville Rollergirls All Stars have their next home bout against the Big Easy Rollergirls of New Orleans. The bout is at 7pm (doors at 6pm) at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds Sports Arena, and tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

Today: Free Day At Traveller’s Rest [Freebies]

Admission to Traveller’s Rest Plantation & Museum is free today (regular price $10) in honor of John Overton’s birthday. Traveller’s Rest is tucked back off Franklin Road between the Harding & Old Hickory intersections, and is home to the Overton house and plantation (which dates back to the year 1799). We think Traveller’s Rest is often overlooked amidst the rest of Nashville’s glitzy glammy scammy tourism hotspots, and encourage you to check it out – But hurry, because they’re only open until 4:30pm. Since it’s free, there’s nothing to lose! Traveller’s Rest is at 636 Farrell Parkway, Nashville, TN 37220.

Cirque du Soleil: Saltimbanco Opens Tonight In Nashville

Bringing the Vegas to Nashvegas (ugh, does everyone else hate that term as much as we do?), Cirque du Soilel’s Saltimbanco opens tonight at the Sommet Center and will be running through Sunday, adding a little, um, flavor to our Easter weekend! Cirque du Soileil needs little explanation, so we’ll cut straight to the chase – Discount $25 tickets are available here (thanks to loyal tipster Chris Chamberlain for the link). And for those who want to know a little more about this particular show:
Saltimbanco -from the Italian “saltare in banco”, which literally means “to jump on a bench”-explores the urban experience in all its myriad forms: the people who live there, their idiosyncrasies and likenesses, families and groups, the hustle and bustle of the street and the towering heights of skyscrapers. Between whirlwind and lull, prowess and poetry, Saltimbanco takes spectators on an allegorical and acrobatic journey into the heart of the city.
Saltimbanco is a Cirque du Soleil signature show inspired by the urban fabric of the metropolis and its colorful inhabitants. Decidedly baroque in its visual vocabulary, the show’s eclectic cast of characters draws spectators into a fanciful, dreamlike world, an imaginary city where diversity is a cause for hope.

Bright & Early: Mistakes We Knew They Were Making Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We mentioned yesterday that the security contractor for Metro Nashville Public Schools accidentally leaked the names, birth dates, and social security numbers of more than 18,000 students and 6,000 parents onto the internet. Oops! Last night, they sent out a sheepish email about the breach (view it here – Thanks to Jody S. for the tip!) letting folks know that the contractor will be providing one year of identity theft protection. To put it into perspective, though, the Davidson County Election Commission misplaced 337,000 of our social security numbers back when they had their big data breach in 2007. So really, this is no biggie (…)!
- New funds for infant mortality. Nashville is going to be the lucky recipient of $483K to fight infant mortality around the city. Currently, about 16 in every 1,000 babies born here die before age 1.
- Wine transport bill. A bill that would let us cart wine across the state border is up for a vote in the Senate today. The same bill will be heard in a House subcommittee next week. We hope.
- Bits & pieces. Our condolences to the folks at WSMV who lost longtime news anchor Dan Miller. Miller passed away suddenly last night on the golf course in Augusta … Tonight is opening night for the Sounds, and no, it is not Thirsty Thursday … General Hospital is hoping for some help from Mayor Dean … For some reason, everyone wants to lead Williamson County Public Schools.
