Happy Hour: Uncivil Unrest
- Coming off of one of the weirdest years in the school’s history, MTSU students are organizing via Facebook to protest the money-saving changes proposed by the Tennessee Board of Regents. TBR Chancellor Charles Manning is slated to speak at MTSU’s December graduation, where several hundred students plan to hold a silent protest. [Nashville Is Talking]

- Due to the budget cuts we talked about this morning, the state may just start shutting down some prisons and distributing inmates into other prisons around Tennessee. [WSMV]
- Ol’ William “Boots” Del Biaggio, the guy who owned 25% of the Preds before being sued by 397,218,371 people and filing for bankruptcy, was charged in another $65M scheme today. [Tennessean]

Tonight: Toys For Tots With The Preds
Get into that giving spirit tonight with the Preds. Their Toys For Tots charity drive tonight is simple: Bring a new, unwrapped toy (worth $5 or more) to donate, get a ticket into the game for $1 with the purchase of a regularly priced ticket. Additionally, 25% of all ticket sales will go to Toys For Tots, and 100% of the proceeds from a silent auction will also be donated. The December 13 home game will also be a Toys For Tots charity drive if you can’t make it tonight!
Thanks to our Twitter friend @Forechecker for letting us know!

Photo Of The Day: December 4, 2008
The fountain outside of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center seems to make for some of our favorite photos in the pool. This sunset photo (aptly tagged “awesome”) by David Shaw is no exception.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

The Weekendist: It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas
From the looks of things this weekend, it might as well be Christmas in Nashville. Nearly every event is Christmas themed, and the big Nashville Christmas parade is even this weekend. A little early, if you ask us (they didn’t), but maybe all this sleet and freezing rain has got the city tricked into thinking that Christmas is already here. Hopefully there will be a little less ice and a little more sun this weekend for the festivities. Meanwhile, we just hung the Christmas Countdown Chalkboard at the Nashvillest HQ, and we’re plotting out what to do in the 21 days until it’s actually Christmas.
FRIDAY
- Cummins Station Artisan Fair, 11am-3pm: The first three Fridays in December, Cummins Station will be hosting an artisan fair, a gathering of handmade crafts, artwork, food and more. Time to pick up some unique gifts!
- Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, 6pm: Mayor Karl Dean will be lighting that Christmas tree, and we sure hope it will be worth the ordeal. American Idol finalist Phil Stacey will be gracing us with his presence at the tree lighting ceremony, as will a quartet from the Barbership Harmony Society.
- Nashville (Gas) Christmas Parade, 7pm: Nashville’s annual Christmas parade, sponsored by Piedmont Natural Gas, is this weekend. As we mentioned, it seems unusually early for a Christmas parade – Are they always this early in December? Anyway, the parade is a good time to fight for parking downtown and stand outside in the freezing cold for an hour. Christmas spirit! Should you need to call the Parade Information Line for some reason, you may do so by dialing (615) 734-1708.
SATURDAY
- A Croft House Christmas At The Nashville Zoo, 10am-3pm: Beginning this weekend, get into the holiday spirit at the Nashville Zoo! Yuletide tours of the Croft House will be offered on December 6th & 7th, 13th & 14th, and 20th & 21st. Tours are free with Zoo admission.
- Kid’s Court At The Belcourt, 10am-11am: Bring your kids to The Belcourt for a free hour of holiday cartoons and fun on the big screen.
- The Art Of The Lost Boys Of Sudan: Opening at Tinney Contemporary on Saturday, a new exhibition showcases the artwork of local Nashvillian Lost Boys. The exhibition runs until December 27, and Tinney Contemporary’s hours are 10am-5pm, Tuesday through Saturday.
- Holiday In The Village, 6pm-9pm: Hillsboro Village merchants are aiming to make your Christmas shopping just a little less painful, by inviting you to Shop ‘N Sip on Saturday evening. Buy their stuff, and they’ll provide holiday treats.
SUNDAY
- Ten Out Of Tenn Christmas Show, 8pm: Come out to the kickoff of the Ten Out Of Tenn Christmas Tour at the Exit/In Sunday night. We’ve written about these guys before, but the holiday show is going to be something completely different and (we hope) every bit as wonderful. Tickets are $15.

Bright & Early: Slicing The Day Away Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Today’s theme is budget cuts: After Governor Phil’s budget talks a few weeks back, we’re now beginning to see the effects of all the slicing and dicing, particularly in the Tennessee prison system which expects to lose around $50M or 8% of their budget. They’re not sure how they’re going to cope, but expect to rely more heavily on volunteers for rehabilitation programs and classes. Metro schools are also looking at a significant cut of $3M by the middle of the month to try and close in on the $11.1M deficit they’ve built up.
- How the Grinch really stole Christmas. Murfreesboro has nixed one neighborhood’s favorite Christmas decoration–Santa’s sleigh and a reindeer dangling over the street. The decoration, which came about when the neighbors were “trying to outdo one another with decorations” a few years ago, was said to violate a long-standing city ordinance.
- Working for a living. Pretty Products, a plant in Mount Pleasant that manufactures car floor mats, is being accused of not paying its employees. Though the plant seems to be paid up on all its bills, employees have come forward anonymously and said they’re afraid to file a formal complaint for fear of losing their jobs.
- Bits & pieces. La Copa Fiesta is the first after-hours club to close due to the impending booze ban … The fate of Tent City is set to be decided at 11:30am today at the Metro Courthouse … The lawsuit intending to halt the English Only election was dismissed … Crime-ridden MTSU won’t even get to go to a bowl game this year.
