Tomorrow: Veterans Day Parade [Road Closures]

Veterans Day is upon us, and so is that crazy parade they have every year on Broadway. The good news is, we love our veterans. The bad news is that most of us aren’t off of work while they celebrate. Furthermore, Broadway will be closed between 8:30am and 1pm from 2nd Avenue all the way down to 18th Avenue. If you’re lucky enough to have the day off and want to get in on the 16 blocks of parade-y goodness, the shindig starts at 11am on 14th Avenue. We hear there might be tanks.

Tonight: Kenny Chesney Surprises Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge

It’s not really a surprise since we’re telling you in advance, but just imagine the looks on all those CMA-tourist-faces when Kenny Chesney shows up tonight at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. We heard it on the radio today – Kenny Chesney and The Wailers are in town for the CMA’s and will be making a relatively impromptu appearance at 9pm. Head over there if you dare!

Happy Hour: Freefalling Edition

  • Congratulations, Tennessee! We’re looking at probably being $800M in the hole instead of $200M as originally projected thanks to revenue shortfalls. [WTVF]
  • If for some reason you’re dying to hear all the latest tips and tricks for decorating YOUR White House, the official White House Christmas decorator will be speaking in Belle Meade next Friday and Saturday. [Tennessean]
  • One more TVA fun fact: Despite rising fuel costs (and probably thanks to our 20% rate hike), the TVA’s economic growth for this year was the second best it’s ever had. [WTVF]
  • And editor of the Murfreesboro Post apologized for his way-racist “Ode to President Obama,” which brought some unwelcome media attention to Middle Tennessee. [Pith In The Wind]
  • The body they pulled out of the Cumberland yesterday is indeed the bridge-jumper from after last weekend’s Titans game. [WKRN]

Photo Of The Day: November 10, 2008

We’ve seen some great skyine shots from Chris Wage before, but this has to be one of our favorites.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: In Good Hands Edition

Good morning, Nashville. It was an exciting weekend between the Titans winning again and the Radio City Rockettes hanging out at Cool Springs Galleria (we missed it!). Mayor Karl Dean may be the latest in line to inherit the failing Metro Schools if test scores aren’t up to par by the end of the school year. We’re not sure how that’s supposed to be more threatening than the state takeover that already happened, but we suppose that’s why no one’s putting us in charge. He’s already picked up two education advisers to guide him through the process should the entire school system end up in his lap. Nashvillest wishes you good luck with that, Mayor Dean.

  • TVA shenanigans. The TVA is trying to show us the silver lining of a 20% rate hike by telling us that because we’re paying more, they’re paying out more to the state and local governments. We’re still kind of curious about how CEO’s 20% salary increase fits into that equation.
  • New kid on the block. Middle Tennessee has a new neighbor–Ned the 21-year old elephant moved into the Hohenwald elephant sanctuary yesterday after being confiscated from a circus trainer in Florida who wasn’t treating the animal right. He’ll be hanging out here until he’s well enough to be placed in a more permanent home.
  • Bits & pieces. Opponents of the English Only ordinance have formed the group “Nashville For All Of Us” to work on killing it in the next few months … Speaking of that, the city’s only bilingual immersion school is getting a few more slots next year … Someone found a body in the Cumberland that police suspect may the bridge jumper from last weekend … Someone in Clarksville found enough sand to build an Obama sand sculpture along the highway.
