Happy Hour: Baby Got Book

  • Two Sevier County men are in custody after breaking into a woman’s home and robbing her at knife point–of her Bible. They were under the impression was money in it or something. [Tennessean]
  • Poor Eric Crafton, the man behind the $500K special election for the English Only initiative in January, is getting some nasty (read: threatening) phone calls and emails at his home. Metro Police are taking it pretty seriously and so is Councilman Crafton, who will gladly be pressing charges once they find the culprit. [Tennessean]
  • From WSMV: “Tractor-Trailer Spills Beads On I-65.” This apparently happened this morning near Millersville, but the beads aren’t mentioned anywhere else in the article, so we’re not sure what that’s all about. [WSMV]
  • A 50-year old Nashville woman is breaking a ton of records with her running and makes us feel like the laziest people on the planet. So far, she’s the fastest woman in the state to run one mile, four miles, ten miles, 5K, 10K, and 15K. Over the weekend, she also broke the half-marathon record. [Tennessean]

NES Changes Up Change For Charity Program [Involuntary Giving]

Nashville spoke and NES listened! Due to some negative customer feedback, the Nashville Electric Service has called off its opt-out Change for Charity program. The program, which brought us some unwanted attention across the internet, consisted of NES rounding up our electric bills to raise money for programs like Metro Action Commission’s energy assistance and Big Brothers of Nashville. It seemed that folks were fine with the charitable giving, but wanted to have some say in the matter.

“We received feedback from customers that they prefer opt in programs, like NES’ Project Help,” said NES CEO Decosta Jenkins. “While this new program would have provided much-needed assistance to charitable organizations in our community, we are listening to our customers and will not implement Change for Charity at the present time.” [NES]

In the mean time, if you’re still interested in giving, you can sign up to add donations onto your electric bill for Project Help, which helps Nashvillians heat their homes during the winter months when they’re low on cash.

Fall Favorites In Nashville?

Well, it’s officially fall in Nashville, which we know by looking at the leaves on the ground and NOT judging by the temperature for the past week. We’re in the mood for pumpkin carving, corn mazes and apple picking (so dang it, Nashville, cool off).  We have a few favorite fall spots of our own, but we’d like to poll our readers:

What’s your favorite autumn tradition in or around Nashville?

We’ll round up our own favorites along with some reader favorites at the end of the week and pass them along for everyone to enjoy!

Photo Of The Day: October 13, 2008

Gross! We’re not sure which fine establishment in Nashville houses creatures like this one, but we’d like to stay far away. Nasty as jellyfish are, though, we love this capture by alicelidel.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: Sign Of The Times Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Like the rest of the country, we’ve been hit hard by home foreclosures in the past few months as a result of the tanking economy. With over 3,000 foreclosed houses in the Metro Nashville area, we’ve started to notice that some of them are rotting, overgrown, and downright nasty. But the good news is, the federal government is kicking in $4 million to help us clean ‘em up a bit while they work on the latest bailout plan. We’re not really getting our hopes up.

  • Round 1, Fight! If you’re sick of Comcast, we might have some good news for you–AT&T is finally pulling into Nashville and trying to give Comcast a run for their money. To be honest, we’re not sure this is really anything to be excited about, but we’re all about chipping away at the monopoly.
  • Burglar caught. Metro police caught a jewelry thief red-handed when they found him chilling downtown with a garbage bag containing about $400 worth of stolen goods. We tend to think that if your trash bag of stolen jewelry only adds up to $400, then you’re doin’ it wrong. But hey, at least this clown is off the streets.
  • Bits & pieces. I-24 shut down for 9 hours on Saturday after an ethanol tanker crashes … The Smyrna Nissan plant is cutting production since, well, no one is buying cars … The mid-state rejoices to see gas fall below $4 … Everyone seems to be feeling the economic woes except the Pied Piper.
