Oktoberfest, Er, Germantown Street Festival, Er, What?

Though it was announced weeks ago that Germantown’s annual Oktoberfest celebration would be splitting into two separate festivals… On the same day… At the same time… In the same place. Well, people are still confused, and rightly so. Let’s just make this clear: There are two festivals this year. And that’s all we’re going to say about that. Here are your options, and you can slice ‘em and dice ‘em however you please:

The Annual Germantown Street Festival & Bier Run

This is the celebration that allows you to wake up early on a Saturday and go for a nice sprint. But it’s probably worth the effort, since this is the Bier Run, and you get free bier (that’s beer). After the Bier Run, a typical Oktoberfest – Oops, we mean German Street Festival – will take place all day with food, more beer, music and kiddie activities. And a tour of homes – how German.

Oktoberfest

Featuring all the same things as the Germantown Street Festival (minus the Bier Run) except the tour of homes is a tour of churches. The most important part is that both festivals will have pony rides for your children. And beer. Amazing.

So the verdict is that we’ll probably walk from one to the other since they’re mere footsteps apart. They are both this Saturday, they are both from 9am-6pm, they are both free, and they are both in Germantown. Easy to remember, at least.

Happy Hour: Another One Bites The Dust

  • Somewhere around 92,000 Tennesseans may have to give their stimulus checks back according to the IRS. But don’t worry-It’s only the retirees and disabled veterans! [Tennessean]
  • And we’re $128 million in the hole for tax collections this year in the state. Good thing they could cut out about $106 million in spending for public colleges and low-income health programs, right? [WTVF]
  • Meanwhile, the economy continues melting down and such with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping close to 700 points today. [Tennessean]
  • MTSU is also having a bit of a meltdown today after a few fires and an emailed threat caused officials to declare martial law evacuate the campus for the rest of the week. Also, the FBI declared a no-fly zone near campus, the Department of Homeland Security is camped out close by, and SWAT teams are on standby. [WKRN]
  • But lest you think we’re all gloom and doom here, we’ll point your attention to an oldie but a goodie–Christian the Lion–who has nothing to do with Nashville but never fails to make us smile. [YouTube]

Photo Of The Day: October 9, 2008

We’d be lying if we said that the Nashville B-Boys weren’t one of our favorite subjects in the city for photographers. We were lucky enough to catch them performing just outside last weekend’s Celebration of Cultures, where Jon Erickson managed to snap this shot.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: Squirreling Around Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re preparing ourselves for an invasion this morning. Back in the day, all we had to worry about were armadillos and presidential candidates, but now the squirrels of Middle Tennessee have declared an all-out war. WSMV cleverly reports that animal controllers have been “going nuts” trying to contain the problem, saying that the entire families of squirrels are finding ways into people’s homes and wreaking all sorts of havoc.

  • Dept. of costly mistakes. After shelling out $1M in damages to rehab center Teen Challenge for zoning them off their land a few months ago, Metro is getting slapped with yet another lawsuit from the US Department of Justice over the mess.
  • Securing the Bicentennial Mall. Police are finally installing emergency call boxes at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park after a woman was raped there last September. The boxes aren’t quite up and running yet, but they’re the first of their kind in a Tennessee state park.
  • Bits & pieces. One person was killed when a shooter opened fire in a Knoxville shopping mall yesterday … A toddler who went missing in Georgia was found safe and sound in Nashville early this morning … Thanks to the rising fuel costs and the TVA’s recent rate hike, Murfreesboro has frozen all city spending, including the police department … Now-infamous Palin hacker David Kernell pled not guilty yesterday to illegally accessing Palin’s email account.
