Happy Hour: Things With Wings
- West Nile: The gift that just keeps giving! [WSMV]
- Looks like we’ll be seeing Bret Michaels around town for a while, though not under the greatest circumstances. A member of his crew fell asleep behind the wheel on his way to their next date in Illinois and crossed the median, killing two young women. Michaels has halted “Rock Of Love” production while he tries to reach out to the women’s families. [Tennessean]
- Remember the Most Dramatic School Rezoning Plan Ever from a few months ago? The plan, which caused a huge stir when people decided it was too segregation-y, apparently didn’t even save the city much money after all. [WSMV]
- It’s been a while since we’ve heard about old William “Boots” DelBiaggio, but his share of the Preds may end up being bought up by the Canadian billionaire who tried to buy the whole team from us last year. [Tennessean]
- Meanwhile, forward Alexander Radulov is still running around somewhere in Russia and using his Preds contract as proverbial toilet paper. And no one’s really doing anything about it. [WTVF]
- And we thought John McCain loved us, but clearly we were mistaken. [Post Politics]

This Weekend: Regions Free Day Of Music At The Nashville Symphony

We say this about a lot of things, but the annual Regions Free Day of Music at the Nashville Symphony is really one of our favorite events in Nashville. This Saturday marks the 3rd year that the Nashville Symphony has graciously opened the doors of the new Schermerhorn Symphony Center and hosted a day of festivities and free, wonderful music. The first year, we waited in line for hours just to get in… And it’s really worth it. This year, passes will be handed out starting at 11am until they hit building capacity, and then the waiting starts. As people come and go, their passes are redistributed to those waiting in line.
The day is full of music from a variety of local groups, and the Nashville Symphony will perform (yes, for free) at 8:15pm. Beware if you’re thinking of seizing the opportunity for a cheap date – the symphony is, uh, low on vibeyness on free day, if you catch our drift. We’re talking disposable cameras, crying babies and TONS of cowboy hats. But you get what you pay for, and it’s a great introduction for those intimidated by the idea of a formal and expensive evening at the symphony.
The full schedule for Saturday is here.

Photo Of The Day: October 1, 2008
It’s clear that this mini Titans fan, captured by claireeyedesign, has the right idea about where his allegiances lie. Taken at Sunday’s game (and yes, win) against the Minnesota Vikings.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Crema Coffee Classes [Guest Posts]

Guest post by our friend Jon Arnold, who irresponsibly neglects several of his own websites… Thanks Jon!
If you spend much time on First Avenue downtown, you’re sure to have also spent some time at two places: one, the weird roller coaster statue, and two, Crema Coffee. Nashvillest has sung its praises of Crema before, but shop proprietor and barista supreme Rachel Lehman is taking it to a new level this fall with espresso technique classes.
My wife and I were fortunate enough to sneak into the Espresso 101 class and quite literally stand behind the Crema bar for a couple hours. Rachel took us through her barista training manual, giving us the ins and outs of her shop, just like she would with a new employee. Her insights are thoughtful and truly show her love of the craft of coffee; to that end she told us some tips of the trade, like how best to tamp your portafilter and how fine to grind your beans.
Once we finished, she gave us a personal walkthrough of her espresso station and showed us how she customized her portafilters (forcing Rachel and her staff to make a *perfect* shot each time), how she uses only the finest from Drew’s Brews local roasting shop, and how attention to detail makes a great espresso. We tried some espresso that she lovingly pulled for us. It was smooth, rich and fragrant, and had a chocolaty-thick yet fruity sweetness to it. Delicious and perfect (partly due to Drew’s roasting, Rachel admits), she then went on to explain how subtle changes in method can absolutely and irrevocably ruin a shot of espresso.
And boy, I do mean ruin. When she adjusted the grind, tamp and dose of the espresso, her portafilters sprayed brewed coffee everywhere, not to mention making a bitter, burnt shot. Literally the only difference was the human elements of choice and approach — a serious thought to ponder next time you enter a Starbucks.
Luckily for everyone, Rachel videotaped a similar training session and posted it on her site – check it out! Rachel also let us know there’s still a few seats open for the other two classes in October and November, which focus on brewing techniques and coffee tasting, respectively. Visit Crema’s site to sign up!

Bright & Early: Fork It Over Edition
Good morning, Nashville. It’s October 1st, meaning it’s time to dig out your wallet and ceremoniously empty it out onto the steps of the Nashville Electric Service. Not only is your electric bill going up by 20% this month thanks to our friends at the Tennessee Valley Authority, but NES has decided that ’tis the season for giving. If you notice a markup on your next bill, it’s because they’re rounding up to the next dollar as a part of their “change for charity” program. Not that we’re opposed to giving, but here’s the catch: the program is opt-out, which means they’ll be collecting your change unless you tell them not to. Hopefully you like where your money is going.
- Paying it forward. Lest we hate on NES all morning, though, the guy who had his pot stash busted by an NES worker is headed to court this morning. They sure do know how to put away the criminals.
- Lightning strikes twice. One north Nashville resident woke up to find a dead guy on his front porch–the victim of a neighborhood shooting. This is actually the second time he’s found a shooting victim in front of his house. “I don’t know,” he tells WTVF, “I guess they think this is the hospital.”
- Bits & pieces. Mayor Dean’s feeling the financial crunch when it comes to city improvement projects, which are on hold until further notice … The Tennessean takes us on a tour of the portable men’s room on Belmont’s campus for the debate. It’s certainly no Hermitage … TennCare makes more big cuts … No, Robert Plant is not going to tour or record with Led Zeppelin any time soon.
