Happy Hour: Get Well Soon Edition

  • Word from Memphis is that Morgan Freeman is currently being held in serious condition at Regional Medical Center after a bad car wreck that happened in Mississippi late last night. We don’t mean to be irreverent, but we’re totally impressed that Morgan Freeman drove a ’97 Nissan Maxima. At any rate,  Nashvillest wishes him a speedy recovery. [Tennessean]
  • In case you were wondering, the Most Dramatic School Rezoning Plan Ever is still dramatic, this time with the NAACP once again asking the school board to reverse the plan that they’ve been calling racist and segregation-y. [WKRN]
  • Mayor Dean is asking the city to cough up $1.8M to go towards a new museum project featuring African American music, arts, and culture to be located on Jefferson St. near the Fisk University and TSU campuses. [Tennessean]
  • If you were wandering around downtown yesterday morning, you might have seen a strange sight on top of the Korean War Memorial Bridge. [Tennessean]

Photo Of The Day: August 4, 2008

Just when we thought we’d seen every shot and every perspective of the downtown riverfront, missbethd submitted this creative photo montage, which we’d imagine wasn’t easy to put together. Best viewed at the larger size.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: We’ll Never Let Go, Jack Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Turns out Riverfront Landing, the barge that doubles as a floating extension of Riverfront Park downtown, is pulling a Titanic. Though it’s only used a couple of times a year, Metro Parks was understandably a bit concerned when one official happened to notice that the structure was tilting to one side and starting to sink. No word yet on whether it’s fixable, but we’re hopeful.

  • Tax-free holiday extinct? Were you one of the thousands of Tennesseans who took advantage of the tax-free weekend? Enjoy it now, because it may have been the last one we’ll see for a while. It’s no secret that the state is strapped for cash, and Governor Bredesen is concerned that this weekend’s lost revenue may not have helped matters.
  • Half-baked. Another big drug bust happened this weekend when police confiscated 131 marijuana plants from a home in Clarksville. The plants probably would have raked in over $250K.
  • Bits & pieces. The Tennessean realizes that Nashvillians are all a-twitter … Manufacturers of the Tennessee snack-food staple GooGoo Clusters are moving in near the airport … Police say violence is on the rise in the downtown area … Wilson County Schools have nixed field trips for the moment in an effort to save gas … Lifeway Christian Resources laid off 100 of their 2,000 employees last week since sales have been on the decline.

Build A Better Bridge [Mixed Reviews]

The Reason Foundation’s 17th Annual Report on the Performance of State Highway Systems has just been released. Here’s how Tennessee breaks down:

Tennessee ranked 19th in overall performance and cost-effectiveness. In last year’s rankings, Tennessee ranked 20th overall. Tennessee is 30th in urban interstate congestion, with 46.51 percent congested. The state tied for 1st in rural interstate condition and 18th in urban interstate condition. Tennessee ranks 13th in deficient bridges—18.83 percent of the state’s bridges are deemed structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Tennessee is 37th in the nation in fatality rates per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.

Um, cheery note to end on. And we still want to know about those deficient bridges.
