Happy Hour: Wheels On The Bus
- Mayor Karl Dean took a bus to work this morning to plug the new program offering city employees free bus rides. And we totally saw him standing at the bus stop this morning looking a little pissed. [WTVF]
- The killers tomatoes are back, sickening another Tennessean. [WTVF]
- An Amber Alert has been issued for a Maury County 13-year old, Bronson Ryan Waldrum, who was kidnapped this afternoon from his home. [WKRN]
- Following in Volkswagen’s footsteps, Bridgestone-Firestone is looking at setting up shop in Tennessee. [WSMV]
- Since money is tight these days, the state cut $6M from MTSU’s budget to take effect immediately. The school is now reviewing 7 of their 185 academic programs and scaling their cleaning crews back to one day per week. [WTVF]
- TDOT is trying their best to dig the Music City Star commuter train out of their $1.7M hole by agreeing to give them $1M with the understanding that they need to make some major changes. [Tennessean]

Capture Music City: On The Home Stretch

A few months ago, we told you about the Capture Music City photography challenge and you know the drill–You submit your best Nashville pictures for everyone to vote on and then the best of the best will be published in the Capture Music City coffee table book. With just 30 days left in the contest, the folks at CMC are turning up the heat by offering two more mini-challenges to help you grab the last-minute votes you need. The first, the Half-Millionth Vote challenge, means that they’ll feature the person who casts the 500,000th vote, which should happen within the next few days. The second one is a little more complicated:
Capture Music City launched several weeks ago, which means most folks have been uploading photos they’ve been taking over the summer. That’s awesome, of course, but we’d love to see a little more from the other seasons. What does Music City look like in the fall? How about winter and early spring?
When you post your seasonal photos, you’ll be able to submit them to their respective challenges. This one ends a week from Sunday (July 27th), so start digging through your archives. The editors’ favorites will be featured on the site and that means more votes for you.

This photo by stephd123 of the Customs House on 7th and Broadway shows off one of the most beautiful buildings downtown. Great capture, Steph!
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Music City Madness: Just What We Needed
Just what we needed, another search for the “next big thing” in country music (because Nashville Star isn’t enough). The appropriately-named “Music City Madness” contest is back for a third round on CMT.com. From CMT.com:
The search is on for the next Music City Madness winner. CMT.com offers the ultimate competition for unsigned artists and musicians representing the broad range of country music genres. The winner will fly to Nashville to tape their own Unplugged at Studio 330 performance and for their own private showcase with A&R executives from Warner Bros. Records Nashville. Plus, Grammy-award winning artist Randy Travis will mentor the winner. This contest could be your big chance, so find out how to submit your video. But don’t wait. The deadline for your submission is Oct. 6, 2008. Send your performance today and get on the road to Music City.
Previous winners include Stephanie Beck Williams and Katelyn Jolley (who just happens to be 13 years old as well). Yeah, we’ve never heard of them either.

Bright & Early: We’re All Smiles Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Brittney Simpson, the 12-year old girl who was shot in the head a few weeks back by her 11-year old friend, came home from the hospital yesterday after a completely amazing recovery. If you need a good reason to smile this morning, you’ll really want to check out both Channel 4 and Channel 5’s video interviews of the family where Brittney walks and talks like nothing happened and definitely earns Nashvillest’s Cutest Kid Ever award . She’s just happy to be with her family and can’t wait to go home and eat some Hamburger Helper. Brittney is basically a champion.
- More lawsuits. The Metro Council has reversed a rezoning decision intended to keep rehab facility Teen Challenge out of Goodlettsville in order to dodge a messy lawsuit by the Department of Justice. The city has already been sued by Teen Challenge for $650,000 in damages.
- Royal flush. Nashville police busted up a poker game last night at house where they suspected an illegal gambling operation. Even better was the marijuana bust in Madison yesterday after a Nashville helicopter pilot spotted the 44 plants from the air.
- Bits & pieces. E. Coli outbreak from meat in five states, Tennessee not included (yet) … North Carolina thinks we’re trying to kill them … Tennessee is moving their data center because it’s actually sinking.
