Johnny Cash Is Rolling Around In His Grave Right Now

Nashvillest’s new favorite country star Snoop Dogg is leaving his fingerprints all over country music yet again. This time, he’s remixed “I Walk The Line” by Johnny Cash, to be included on a “Johnny Cash Remixed” project along with remixes by the Alabama 3, Pete Rock, Mocean Worker, Philip Steir, Sonny J, Kennedy, Mexican Industry Of Sound, the Heavy and Count de Money.

Snoop tells Billboard Magazine that “If you take your time to listen to it, country music is very similar to rap.” That explains a lot.

Happy Hour: The Heart Of America

  • Cindy McCain will be making an appearance in Nashville tomorrow to relate to the American people and all that. She’ll be riding a pace car around the racetrack for the Firestone 200 Indycar Race out in Lebanon. We’d love to see that. [Post Politics]
  • Over 200 crazy folks turned out at the Green Hills Mall Apple Store to buy the new iPhone 3G that hit the shelves at 8am. The best part of this article is probably the Apple sheep vs. PC sheep discussion that takes place in the comments. [Tennessean]
  • The guy who posted all the Williamson County students’ social security numbers all over the internet has predictably resigned, effective immediately. [WTVF]
  • We guess we can admit that CMApocalypse 2008 was sort of a good thing since it apparently brought in $22M of visitor spending for the city. All those new tube tops and cowboy hats add up! [Tennessean]

Photo Of The Day: June July 11, 2008

This one came to us from Matt Mikulla as a great example of tilt-shift miniature faking, which is a photographic technique used to make big things look like miniature models. Most of Matt’s “Tiny Town” set is pretty convincing and definitely a unique perspective of the city.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: Save Us A Spot Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re happy to report that we haven’t witnessed any more fiery explosions around our Green Hills bunker, so our power is back on and we’re back in business! We’re also hoping that the lights are on over at the Apple Store in the Green Hills Mall for everyone crazy enough to stand in line for an iPhone. And speaking of camping out, Titans fans started pitching their tents outside of LP field yesterday to wait around for the box office’s Saturday morning opening. Props to all of you and your camp-out stamina–Not that iPhones and Titans tickets aren’t tempting, but we’re just way too lazy.

  • Vanderbilt makes honor roll. Congratulations to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which made the Honor Roll of Best Hospitals from U.S. Weekly News & World Report. Seven of their programs were ranked in the top 50 of their field including Heart, Cancer, and Respiratory Disorders.
  • Sending out an SOS. The response for help from the Metro Action Commission has been overwhelming, with nearly 2,000 low-income Nashvillians applying for bill assistance within the past week.
  • Bits & pieces. Monroe Harding’s Youth Connections program for kids aging out of foster care is opening a thrift store in South Nashville … Big Brother may start keeping an eye on Metro Government vehicles by installing GPS trackers … Steve Sullivan’s back still hurts and he’s not sure if he’ll be playing with the Preds this season.

Freebies With Strings Attached: Chick-Fil-A

Today is “Cow Appreciation Day” at Chick-Fil-A. What this actually means is that if you dress up like a cow, you get free food at Chick-Fil-A today. This is by far the most complicated of the summer food freebies, but we guess it could be fun. If you wear head to toe cow getup, you’ll be rewarded with a free combo meal. “Partial cow” gets a free entree. We’re also not sure if we would readily refer to a fast food sandwich as an “entree,” but that’s what Chick-Fil-A says on their website. They also include tips for making your own cow costume and locations, so we basically have no excuse not to go.
