Happy Hour: We’re Still Here

It’s been an eventful afternoon for Nashvillest, but we’re so dedicated to bringing you the happenings around town that we ventured out to find wifi. You can thank us later.

  • A Williamson County educator accidentally posted as many as 17,000 students’ personal information on his personal website. We’re talking names, birthdates and social security numbers here. The security breach happened in August 2007. [WKRN]
  • Breaking news: “Pauly Bear” and “Snoogums” are no longer engaged. Or perhaps the better tagline is “Breaking news: Tennessean writers surf classified ads for filler.” We’re just as baffled as you are. [Tennessean]
  • One more of the poser-cops who were running around town robbing people has been arrested. Two down, one to go. [WTVF]
  • The wife of James Cannon, murdered Green Hills attorney, has been charged with his murder. Her mom thinks that she’s innocent because she couldn’t possibly have “wrassled” him down to the ground to strangle him. [WKRN]

BREAKING: If Nashvillest HQ Blows Up, We’re Doomed

4:10pm – Nashvillest is currently stationed at headquarters in Green Hills, where a series of electrical explosions in the past 20 minutes have left much of the area in the dark and/or on fire. If Nashvillest headquarters blows up, we’re going to be pissed. Against our better judgement, we’re weathering the storm (away from all windows and huddled under a mattress) because we can’t bear to leave such riveting action in the name of safety. More news as it develops.

4:45pm – UPDATE: Green Hills mall without power (must be pretty miserable for those Apple fans waiting in line), lights on Hillsboro Road are out, bad traffic. Fire crews are working in the area. Of course, Hillsboro Road is always bad at rush hour.

5:02pm- UPDATE: Channel 2 reports 776 customers without power in Green Hills, fast food joint Krystal’s full of smoke on Hillsboro Road.

6:38pm- UPDATE: Things have quieted down in Green Hills, but we still don’t have power. Oh noes!

Photo Of The Day: July 10, 2008

This eerie capture by emdoylethemick was taken somewhere south of Nashville. We loved the mist on the water and the steps on the tree, which look like they’ve weathered a few storms.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Nashville Is 25th Largest City In U.S. (We Win)

This is no mixed review – Nashville just beat out reigning champion Washington D.C. as the 25th most populated city in the United States. Memphis is ranked 18th largest, but it seems that their population is actually shrinking each year. We’ll catch ‘em someday. But for now, we have high hopes for what this new recognition will encourage in urban development.

Also notable – Nashville businesses are making up for lost time with the American Heart Association. Six local companies were named to the 2008 Fit-Friendly Companies list. If you remember a few weeks back when we were graced with the honor of least heart-friendly city for women by the good ol’ American Heart Association, you’ll understand why we’re patting ourselves on the back with this one.

Abandoned Alligators: A Different Kind Of Homeless

Oh, Tennessee. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is now euthanizing the alligators that they capture within state borders, stating that they don’t have the resources to keep all of their scaly guests on board for life. It’s illegal to possess or import alligators in good ol’ TN, but many of our neighbors in the South don’t have this restriction. We used to send captured gators packing back to Florida, but they put an end to the exchange program when Florida realized that they had enough gators on their own.

We’re kind of waiting for PETA to swoop down upon us at any moment.

Bright & Early: Mr. Dean Goes To Washington Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Mayor Karl Dean is taking a trip to Washington DC to discuss the benefits of the Alternative High Schools Initiative, which seems to be just about the only good thing going on with the Metro Schools these days. The program allows a lot of flexibility within schools, providing 12 different educational models that can be mixed and matched to fit the needs of schools that are struggling with the traditional model. Over the next year, Metro will be taking a look at how to make that work for the city.

  • Short notice. The American Cancer Society’s Fight Back Express bus is at Centennial Park as we speak. They’ll be there until 10 this morning letting folks share their stories with some unnamed members of Congress about struggling with cancer. If you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by!
  • Need help? Today is the last day to apply for help with your bills through the Metro Action Committee, so if you’re in need, head out to the Susan Gray Head Start Center or the main downtown location. Given the demand this year, though, it may take you a while.
  • Bits & pieces. Police arrested one of the three people who were dressing up as cops and robbing people around town, still looking for the other two … Foreclosure rates have shot up 50% since last June … We may be in for more rain and storms today … The Sounds beat the Omaha Royals 6-4, continuing their streak of Awesome … A methadone treatment clinic was busted for throwing out sensitive patient information instead of destroying it.

Correction: Though the Susan Gray Head Start Center won’t be accepting applications after today for bill assistance, you can still apply at the downtown center. (Thanks to Kleinheider for the correction!)
