Weeded: TBI Interrupts Your Pot Supply

Drug busts seem to be all the rage these days, but even we can’t wrap our minds around this one: The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation uncovered a huge marijuana operation in East Tennessee today when they spotted a campsite that housed somewhere around 357,500 baby marijuana plants near the North Carolina border in Cocke County. That’s more pot than the Governor’s Task Force confiscated in 2007 combined. The site was so big that it was actually spotted from the air by a helicopter pilot making sweeps for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

When law enforcement arrived on the scene, no one was guarding it and no arrests were made. Word on the street is that the plants would have pulled in around $700 million. Now we know what people do for fun in East Tennessee–or at least what they used to do.

Happy Hour: Stepping It Up

  • A huge congratulations goes out to former Nashville mayor Bill Purcell who’s been appointed as the new director of Harvard University’s Institute of Politics. He’s set to start his new gig on September 1st. [WTVF]
  • Metro is contracting an Atlanta-based firm to design and engineer our brand new 1.2 million square foot convention center to be built downtown. Why oh why did it have to be Atlanta? [City Paper]
  • To all the Nashville drivers who like to do 35 mph on the interstate, a state Supreme Court ruling says that cops can pull you over for going too slow. Let that be a lesson. [WSMV]
  • A Donelson man was busted for running an “aggravated prostitution” ring through Craigslist–”aggravated” meaning he had HIV. [City Paper]

Good News For Geeks: At Least You’re Getting Paid

All Nashvillest love goes out to our local techies & geeks. Today’s “Cybercities” report from the American Electronics Association wields a double-edged sword for those in technological occupations, depending on how you look at it. We try to look on the bright side.

Bright side #1: We made the list at #49 (out of 60).
Bright side #2: We topped the list with the highest percent increase in tech-related wages at 10% (and came in 48th for the average value of our high-tech paychecks).
Bright side #3: We created 100 new tech jobs for the year of the report, 2006 (but Seattle slaughtered us from the top of the list with 7,800 new tech jobs – we came in 49th).

That 10% average wage increase in 2006 left us trailing only 20% behind the national average. Not such great news, but at least we’re getting paid.

Out & About: Capture Music City Mini-Challenge

The second Capture Music City Mini Challenge is here. The task: Get out to community events. Take pictures. Post them on the Capture Music City site. Simple enough, right? The best photos will be featured on the main page, grabbing you some extra exposure (no pun intended) for your photos in the main contest. This mini-challenge ends on July 7, so you’ve got about two weeks to get snapping.

Bright & Early: Those Were The Days Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Unless you’re really, really new to town, you probably remember seeing at least one big show come through the Starwood Amphitheatre out in Antioch. We were all pretty sad to hear the news that it was shutting down last February and some did their best to save it, but the land was snatched up by Vastland Realty who never really announced what they were going to do with it. The City Paper reports that they’re about to turn it into a mixed-use development with mostly commercial use and about 250 condominiums. Though the plans have already been approved, the folks in Antioch are none too happy about it and still sort of bitter about losing Starwood.

  • If it ain’t broke. Metro School officials met with members of the public today about the rezoning efforts that everyone’s saying will segregate some schools and shut down others that seem to be working well. The meeting left a lot of unanswered questions that officials say they plan to consider while they work on the final plan to be presented in a few weeks.
  • Sharpest crayon in the box. Two guys out in Lebanon brought a 5-year old kid to a drug deal and were charged with child neglect. The best part of the situation is that when police pulled them over, they admitted they’d just bought crack but were “dismayed” when police tested the substance and found that it had no cocaine in it at all. Bummer!
  • Bits & pieces. Gov. Bredesen has to testify at former TN Sen. John Ford’s “Tennessee Waltz” trial in Nashville … There’s a giant bear wandering around in Oak Ridge … Don’t breathe! Air quality alert today … The Sounds lost again.
