Happy Hour: Up, Up & Away

  • Despite the city’s best efforts to thwart it, the global warming hot air balloon did end up lifting off today and floating directly over Al Gore’s house. The balloon was intended to communicate that Gore was a “global warming alarmist” and doesn’t really know what he’s talking about. [Tennessean]
  • If you participated in the Dining Out for Life event in April to benefit Nashville CARES, you’ll love this news: The event pulled in $75,000 to benefit support services for folks in Nashville suffering from HIV and AIDS. [Out & About]

Nashvillest Spotlight: Nashville’s Smallest Art Gallery

After literally stumbling across the Smallest Art Gallery a few weeks ago, we’ve been dying to write about it, waiting for the right moment to bring you the news about this wonderful (albeit tiny) piece of Nashville. It perfectly captures what we’re all about at Nashvillest – The quirky, oft-overlooked things that give our city its personality. We could wax poetic about the gallery for hours, but the creators have already said it best:

Located in the heart of Hillsboro Village NSAG is the smallest functioning art gallery in Nashville, and dare we say, the world! The art is real. Really small, but real. The gallery is already attracting some of the top artists from around the US, as well as local Nashville artists.

In a former life, the gallery was a neglected, graffiti-covered display case. Soon with a little help from some Goo Gone, a razor blade, and a total interior makeover, the gallery started to take shape.

The gallery lights are powered by a solar panel mounted to the top, making it the only 100% self-sufficient art gallery in Nashville (and again, perhaps the world).

Clever, eh? The gallery’s third show will be opening tomorrow at 7pm - ”A Small Gathering for a Little Conversation” by Mason & Kristen Frenzel. Join us at 1802½ 21st Ave South (between Posh Shoes & the shoe cobbler) to see it for yourself.

Photo Of The Day: June 20, 2008

This East Nashville critter shot by theworldtoashes sort of makes our skin crawl, but we totally love the way it turned out. Between the backdrop of the sky, the barely visible web and the detail of the spider, we think we’re in love.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

The Weekendist: Summer Is Here Edition

It feels like summer came to Nashville weeks ago, but today is actually the first official day of summer. This weekend is packed with activities and events, so get out and celebrate in true summer style. Even if you don’t make it to a scheduled events, take a trip to the park or the lake and enjoy the perfect temperatures forecasted for the weekend. Don’t forget about the ongoing events we’ve written about in the pastBig Band Dances, Tango In The Park, all sorts of movies & concerts in local parks, Dragon Music Sundays, Opryland’s Poolapalooza, free Nashville Symphony performances, and more.

FRIDAY
Nashville Predators are hosting a 2008 Draft Party at the Sommet Center. Arrive at 5pm, and the draft starts at 6pm. Fun for families, there will be inflatable games for kids and food & drink specials, as well as an autograph signing and an equipment sale.

Nashville’s International Puppet Festival is a local treasure. See our post about it here, and be sure to check it out. Tickets may be reserved in advance for a small convenience fee, and walk-up tickets are free (Downtown Library; 9am-5pm Friday-Sunday).

Friends of Warner Parks hold Full Moon Pickin’ Parties all summer, and today is the 2nd one this year. Great local bluegrass bands will be playing, and anyone can bring an instrument and join in the pickin’ circles (you even get discounted admission if you do). $20 at the door, but children 6 and under get in free, and admission for children ages 7-15 is only $10. From 7pm-11pm, this is a great way to spend a relaxing evening outside.

SATURDAY
Ten Thousand Villages is at it again with their Second Annual Kids Day featuring free facepainting, art, games, food, and drum circles (all day, drum circles are at 11:30am & 1:30pm).

Walk Like MADD 5k is your weekly opportunity to participate in a 5k benefiting something or another. MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) will use all funds raised on community education about drunk driving. The walk begins at 9am in Centennial Park.

Shelby Bottoms Water Fest is celebrating, well… Water. They boast “Free admission, free gifts, free food, free water, games, crafts and activities, face painting, rain barrel workshops, Nashville Zoo presentation, and all you wanted to know about the most precious element of life,” along with special guests from many other organizations (10am-2pm).

What Is June Freeze? Our favorite local urban pranksters will be holding a staged freeze in Hillsboro Village on Saturday. Meet in Fannie Mae Dees Park at 1pm for instructions to take part, or wander around the village around the same time and wait for hilarity to ensue.

A Town Hall Meeting with Congressmen Jim Cooper and John Hall is scheduled for discussion of political issues within the entertainment industry. 2pm at Sunset Grill in Hillsboro Village. Should be entertaining with the afore-mentioned frozen agents wandering around. [Thanks to Chris C. for the tip!]

We wrote about Taste Of Music City a long time ago, and it’s here! Downtown on the Korean War Veterans Bridge from 5pm-9pm, enjoy Nashville’s biggest food & wine festival on Saturday night.

The 2008 Jefferson Street Jazz & Blues Festival kicks off at 12pm. Local jazz & blues music is the highlight of this street festival, and it’s really one of the best festivals of the summer. The festival is free, but if you want to attend the Bridging The Gap Mixer on Friday night, it’s $10 ($5 for kids) and features even more local music on the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge.

Donate some time and help clean up downtown. Many local residents will be teaming together to clean up under the Jefferson Street bridge from 8am-12pm. After the cleanup, you’re practically already at the Jazz & Blues Fest!

There’s a free show upstairs in the pool room of the Sportsman’s Grille on Saturday evening, and if you know your musicians, you know that you don’t want to miss this – Jack Pearson, Tony Monaco and Jim White will be forming a jazz trio for the night. Chris C. gives us the scoop on his blog, and a little background on each of the musicians. Be there, 9:30pm. [Thanks for the tip, Chris!]

Nashville’s International Puppet Festival: Creepy, But Cool

Highlight of our weekend: Nashville’s International Puppet Festival. Over 3,000 people will be in town for this annual festival, so you may want to consider hopping the bus downtown to check it out. Shows started today at 9am and will be going through Sunday evening like clockwork, with performers from all over the world bringing their puppetry skills to the Downtown Library.

Click here for a complete schedule of the three days. We’re particularly excited about seeing Huber Marrionettes by Phillip Huber, best known for his work in Being John Malkovitch. Tickets can be reserved online for a $2.50 service charge, or you can take your chances at the walk-up tickets for free.

Bright & Early: We Blame Stagflation Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Yesterday was a great day for a swim, and about 25 Nashvillians–including 12 members of the City Council–took full advantage by busting out their bathing suits and swimming across the Cumberland. They say it’s clean and safe and all 25 made it across without drowning, but we’re still taking bets on which council member will be the first to wake up with an extra appendage. A few weeks ago, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation released a report about the high levels of sewage and E. Coli in water coming out of the Cheatham Dam which empties out just a few yards downstream from the chosen swimming spot. Ew.

  • We win with our K9s. Congratulations to Metro Police Sgt. Kerry Fowler and drug-sniffing dog Izzy who took home the US Police Canine Association’s trophy for drug detection team of the year. Fowler and Izzy made a huge bust of more than 150 lbs. of cocaine in some suitcases at BNA in January.
  • Pacman saga continues. A Las Vegas woman who was involved in the infamous strip club shooting along with Pacman Jones last year was found dead in New York last week from an apparent fall. Though no official accusations have been made, we’ll go ahead and throw it on the pile of reasons that we’re glad he’s not ours. And oh yeah, he still hasn’t served out his NFL suspension that kept him completely out of the 2007 season. Have fun with that, Dallas! (Thanks, Chris C.!)
  • Bits & pieces. City Paper says the economy is stagflating … Group buys historic Franklin battlefield to create a new Civil War park … Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame announces 15 nominees … UT’s endowment down by $35M in the first part of 2008.

Fang Fingers: Preds Draft Party Tonight!

It seems like we haven’t heard much good news from the Preds lately between losing Hordichuk, Boots’ legendary five lawsuits and almost defaulting on the Sommet Center’s lease. But the guys are ready to bounce back tonight with the annual Draft Party to kick off the first round of the draft from Scotiabank Place in Ottawa. Starting at 5pm, they’ll be rolling out the inflatable games, offering great food & drink specials, and throwing the broadcast up on the megatron for everyone to see. And the best part? It’s free. Sommet Center doors open at 5, draft starts at 6, and JP Dumont will be on the concourse signing autographs from 6-7.
