Happy Hour: The Merits Of Proofreading

  • New reports are showing that Tennessee did some miscalculations and shoddy paperwork and missed out on about $67M in federal funds that could have gone to help the mentally disabled. [Tennessean]
  • If U.S. senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker get their way, we may have a toll-free hotline to call if we have problems with our banks. Not quite as personal as Lamar’s plea for gas price stories, but we’ll take it. [Chattanoogan]
  • The Preds traded forward Darcy Hordichuk today to the Carolina Hurricanes. We’ll miss you, Darcy! Mostly because we were always pretty taken with your flashy website and Hordichuk Media Center! [City Paper]
  • Tennessee’s unemployment rate jumped almost an entire percentage point from April to May, going from 5.5% to 6.4%, representing about 30,800 more people who are now without jobs. [WSMV]

Cool Springs Wild Oats Morphs Into Whole Foods Today

The Cool Springs Wild Oats location, which closed on Tuesday, has reopened today as a Whole Foods. We missed the ribbon cutting – er, “bread breaking” – ceremony this morning, but the Grand (Re)Opening Celebration goes all weekend. There will be free food demonstrations and lots of samples all weekend, as well as some special events each day. We’re skipping the guided tours today (between 11am and 6pm) but we wandered around at lunchtime and scored some free snacks. Mmm.

See a schedule of events here. The highlights are Friday’s Southern Shrimp Boil (free; 4pm-7pm), Saturday’s Family Day, and Sunday’s Local Non-Profit Day.

Photo Of The Day, June 19, 2008

June has been a month of weird weather for us, and we had some early-morning fog on Sunday that made this shot by berlyjen look pretty ominous. Great shot!

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Veepsteaks 2008: Yes We Can!

Now that the never-ending Democratic primaries have been over for a few weeks, we’d almost forgotten about that whole election thing. But with all of that behind us, we’re into a whole new stage: Choosing the running mates. To ease the pain we’re all going to experience in the next few weeks while we’re being subjected to way more media speculation that we can handle, our friends at the Nashville Post and Jimmy Kelly’s Steakhouse have put together a little contest to pass the time:

The rules are simple … tell us who you think will be the Republican and Democratic choices for vice president. The person who guesses correctly gets dinner. Should there be more than one correct entry, we will draw the winner from a hat. In the event no one guesses both potential VPs correctly, we will draw from those who got at least one. We won’t be headed to the Supreme Court to figure this one out – there will be a clear winner. … Oh, and in honor of the Voting Rights Act, we will only accept one entry per person.

Head over here to enter the contest and try your own hand at baseless speculation. The only difference between you and the newsfolk is that you could get a free meal (steak!) out of it, which we think is a pretty sweet deal. Good luck, Nashville!

Bright & Early: Welcome Home Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Last July, we sent 120 members of the Tennessee National Guard off to Iraq. They’re finally coming home on Sunday, and we couldn’t be happier to have them back. This is the same group that did another Iraq stint in 2003 and also helped clean things up on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. They’ll be arriving stateside tomorrow and actually getting back to the motherland on Sunday. Nashvillest sends them all a big thanks and a big welcome home.

  • Good news for the old folks. Gov. Bredesen attended the signing ceremony yesterday for a bill that lets seniors to use TennCare money to receive care at home instead of having to move to an assisted living or nursing home. Bredesen noted that it’s something “that is going to improve the day-to-day lives of senior and disabled citizens in the days ahead.”
  • In the zone. The school board is really happy about the extra $23M written into the new budget for them, but they’re still fighting some big zoning problems. Namely, they’re talking about sending all the JT Moore Middle School kids into Hume-Fogg Magnet School for high school. Predictably, it isn’t going over well with the Hume-Fogg parents.
  • Bus route cancellations. Despite the $1M of funding cleared for MTA, they’ll still have to cut five routes, according to the Tennesssean: Route 1 Vine Hill, Route 13 Sylvan Park, Route 16 Madison/Old Hickory, Route 31X Harpeth Valley Express, Route 45X Oak Hill Express and Night Owl service.
  • Bits & pieces. Titans’ David Fowler says he never used steroids, despite last week’s allegations … We’re glad Nashville can’t claim this: Woman sues Victoria’s Secret for injuring herself with a thong … Due to all the flooding in the Midwest, expect to pay more for corn and grain … Volkswagon may be coming to Chattanooga.

Urban Pranksters: Dive-In Theater

Funny people are our favorite, and we just hit the jackpot. We think we found all of Nashville’s funny people in one place. They’re all part of a group called the Dive-In Theater, and spreading harmless (yet hilarious) mischief and pranks around town is their specialty. These are the people who planned a fake marathon rest stop during the Country Music Marathon, complete with donuts, recliners, pajamas, and planted “quitter” runners. These are also the people who held a zombie protest at the zombie walk last month, holding signs that read “Down With The Dead!” and “What Part Of DEAD Don’t You Understand?”

Check out this video of over 200 people simultaneously freezing for a solid five minutes in New York’s Grand Central Station a few months ago. Wonder what would happen if something like that went down in Nashville? On Saturday, a “freeze” is happening in Hillsboro Village to celebrate the first day of summer. Agents will meet in Fannie Mae Dees Park at 1pm to receive their instructions and sync their watches. Anyone is invited to take part, so we hope we’ll see some of you there.

Thanks to Levi for the tip!
