Happy Hour: Nothing But Trouble
- We know it’s easy to get bored in Cookeville, but Channel 4 is reporting a string of arson incidents that have sent 6 port-o-johns up in flames. Kids these days. [WSMV]
- Nashville Is Talking had us on the edge of our seats with a blow-by-blow account of a police chase down I-40 this morning. After speeding through Davidson and Wilson counties, they finally caught up with the guy, who had taken his girlfriend hostage and stabbed himself (he’s gonna be fine) when police got to the scene. [WKRN]
- We’ll eventually lay this issue to rest, but it’s almost becoming comical: Ol’ Boots has been slapped with lawsuit number five today, this one coming from a national arena management firm that claims he cheated them out of $7M. [Tennessean]
- The Metro Board of Education approved some new language to their contract that prevents them from discriminating against employees based on “sexual orientation, gender identity and creed,” making Nashville one of the only school systems in the state to adopt this kind of provision. [Out & About]

Nashvillest Favorite: Ellie’s Run For Africa
There are a lot of 5K runs in Nashville, but Ellie’s Run For Africa is our favorite. It benefits a good cause (helping students and families in poverty-stricken parts of Africa), it has a cool story (it all started with a 10 year old and big idea) and it’s more than just a 5K. There’s a kids fun run, games, music, and other fun activities. We always go even though we don’t run (told you we were lazy). Join us for the 5th year of Ellie’s Run at Percy Warner Park this Saturday at 7:30am (registration starts at 6:30, or you can register online). And here’s a little extra nudge for you American Idol fans who need an excuse to get out of bed that early – hometown hero Melinda Dolittle will be the Master of Ceremonies this year.

Photo Of The Day: June 11, 2008
It can be tough to capture clouds like this through the eye of a camera, but we were totally impressed by how huge and looming these looked while they were hanging over the Parthenon. We also hadn’t noticed the statues on top of it before. Great job, macintheus.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest†if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: We’re Missing Bonnaroo Edition
Good morning, Nashville. The folks in Manchester, TN are all geared up for the huge and amazing Bonnaroo Festival that kicks off tomorrow. We’re sad that we don’t get to be there, but for everyone who will be, Nashvillest hopes you have the time of your life. Keep us posted on Twitter or in the comments so we can live vicariously, and stay safe out there!
- Tuition hikes. The Tennessee Board of Regents is recommending tuition hikes anywhere from 5% to 13% for all of their campuses. The TBR–which oversees a sizable network of campuses including MTSU, ETSU, and Austin Peay–blames the state’s budget crunch for the revenue shortage and says the increase is necessary to keep them up and running. We get it, but we’re sure glad it’s not us.
- DCS on thin ice. The TN Department of Children’s Services, facing the ever-growing issues of federal funding cuts and understaffing, met with state lawmakers to convince them that they’re following the guidelines of a messy class-action suit filed against the department in May 2000. Sen. Harper isn’t buying it.
- Bits & pieces. Gold Section tickets for CMApocalypse 2009 sold out in a record-breaking 15 minutes … Southern Baptist Convention says no to central sex offender database … Federal judge may find a trustee to clean up Boots’ mess … Expect yet another increase in your electric bill next month.

Beat The Heat: Metro Swimming & Spraygrounds
What is a sprayground, you ask? We asked the same thing. Apparently, it’s every little kid’s dream – A place where they can run through the sprinklers and not get in trouble for getting their clothes wet. Metro Nashville offers a variety of free and unique solutions to beat the heat in the summer. Where we come from, you have to pay several hundred dollars every summer to join a neighborhood pool. Nashville will hear nothing of the sort. As of this Monday, all pools and spraygrounds are open for business through August 6.
SWIMMING POOLS
Free to the public, there are 7 metro pools open 6 days a week. Coleman, East, Hadley, Hartman, Looby, Napier and Rose. check out Metro Parks‘ pdf for hours and additional info. Most of the pools offer swimming lessons for a small fee.
SPRAYGROUNDS
There are 2 official spraygrounds in Nashville, although we hear that the Bicentennial Mall fountains make for an excellent makeshift “sprayground.” They have been open since May 24, and they will remain open about a month longer than the metro pools, closing on Labor Day. The Kirkpatrick Sprayground is at 620 South 9th Street, and the Watkins Sprayground is at Jo Johnston Ave. at 17th Avenue North. They’re open 9am-6:30pm during the week, and 10am-3pm on the weekends.
FIRE DEPT SPLASH OUT
For our Murfreesboro readers, the Murfreesboro Fire Department will literally be spraying kids down with a fire hose this summer. They have three Splash Outs scheduled this summer, on June 19, July 17 and July 24. Maybe next year Nashville will take the hint and start up something similar of our own.
WAVE COUNTRY
We know we promised free, but at $10 for adult admission and $8 for kids, it’s not much of a budget stretch to hit Wave Country once or twice this summer. Located at 2320 Two Rivers Parkway, Wave Country has a giant wave pool, brand new “high speed” slides, and a children’s water playground. It’s open Tuesday-Sunday from 10am-7pm.
POOLAPALOOZA
This one’s not for the kiddies. 21+ at the Cascades Pool in Opryland, every Friday night is Poolapalooza. Free admission, free concert, even free select parking. The evening starts at 6pm, and the concerts start at 7pm. The fun goes through August 29.

New Sidewalks: They Have A Plan, And It’s Strategic
Since we’re all stowing our cars for the time being, we’re pretty interested in Metro’s brand spankin’ new plan for making the city more pedestrian-friendly. They’ve finally put the draft up for public review, but if you want the hard copy you’ll have to head to the downtown branch of the Nashville Public Library. For the technology-literate among us, you can find the PDF version over here. If you’re dying to see what your neighborhood is going to look like, it gets a little more complicated; fortunately the Tennessean has provided us with a lengthy list of steps for doing just that. And finally, if you’ve got something to say about it once you’ve checked it out, you can email the Powers That Be at info@nashvilleplan.com.
The strategic plan for bikeways and sidewalks is part of the larger Plan of Nashville that addresses most aspects of what the city is going to look like in the next few years. We’d recommend checking it out, but not until after you’d had your coffee.
