The Weekendist: Let’s Take This Outside Edition

Happy World Environment Day, Nashville. Many of this weekend’s activities are taking place in the great outdoors, and we’re looking forward to the change of scenery. Saturday is Tennessee’s Free Fishing Day (no licenses required), so you can have a little DIY fun if you’ve got the right equipment. If you’re lacking the fishing gear, just check out our picks for this weekend.

FRIDAY

  • Rocketown Faith Night with the Nashville Sounds: A special evening to benefit Rocketown, there will be skateboard demonstrations, dance teams, and a 5:30pm concert. The game starts at 7pm. $10 gets you a ticket to the concert & game, plus a hot dog and a drink. Not bad.

SATURDAY

  • 6th Annual Catfish Rodeo: All day at Centennial Park – 2,000 pounds of catfish will be tossed into the park’s own Lake Watauga, and kids will be invited to fish them out. The first 600 kids ages 5-16 to register will be allowed to fish, so make sure you show up when registration opens (7:30am for the 9am session; 10:30am for the 12pm session) to hold a spot. Prizes will be awarded, and of course there will be free food and entertainment. Because that’s how we do it in Nashville.
  • Strokes of Genius – “Petite Fleur” Children’s Workshop: Alexandre Renoir, great-grandson of the famous painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, will be leading two free painting workshops at the Tennessee State Museum. The Strokes of Genius: Renoir exhibit closes this Sunday, so check that out while the kids paint. Workshops are at 10:30am and 1:30pm, and you have to make a reservation.
  • FirstArtSaturday: Hosted by The Arts Company, this month’s FirstArtSaturday is an opening of the new “Brother Mel: 50 Years Of Fresh Art” exhibit. Brother Mel will be there himself, celebrating his 80th birthday as part of the opening reception from 6pm-9pm. The FirstArtSaturday Gallery Crawl will be happening as usual, with 17 galleries participating this month.
  • National Trails Day: Visit one of the many area Nature Centers and celebrate National Trails Day with hikes, bikes, classes, and other outdoorsy fun.
  • Meet Your Farmer: Meet local farmer Troy Smiley of Smiley Farms and learn about what it takes to be a farmer in the 21st century. 12pm at the Nashville Farmer’s Market.

SUNDAY

  • Sunday Mornin’ Country: A tradition at the Ryman, say goodbye to CMA crowd and enjoy lots of Sunday morning country music at a reasonable price ($13-18).

Happy Hour: We Speak English Here

  • You may remember all the hoopla of Metro City Councilman Eric Crafton’s die-hard effort to make English the official language of Nashville, which eventually got the big veto from Mayor Purcell. Well, he’s back with a vengeance, this time armed with a brand new website and some sort of postcard campaign set to drop next week. If he gets 10,103 signatures, it goes on the ballot in November. [City Paper]
  • The Madison no-kill shelter Happy Endings may become the latest casualty of the Recession From Hell. The shelter, which has been finding homes for cute furry things for 11 years now, says its donors are no longer able to give like they have in the past and they’re running out of funds. [WSMV]
  • Commissioners at Mount Pleasant’s City Hall laid the smack down last night at their City Council meeting. If only Metro’s meetings were that exciting, we might actually have a reason to watch Metro3 on Tuesdays. On second thought… [WTVF]
  • Tennessee’s disaster response program has been given $17M to beef up communications. We were really excited at first because we thought it might help out with the whole dysfunctional-911 issue, but it looks like it’s just for large-scale disasters. [WSMV]

Going Green: Capture Music City Mini-Challenge

A few weeks ago, we told you about the Tennessean’s Capture Music City photography contest, which we really think is one of the coolest things that the Tennessean has done in years. Over the next few months, they’ll be setting up a couple of mini-challenges to help you get the votes you need to make it into the coffee table book to be published later in the year.

This week’s challenge: Green things!

Green is a fun color. It’s the color of life. It’s the color that surrounds us in nature. We could probably say a hundred things about green. We love it! So let’s have a photo challenge for the color green. Get out there and shoot green things. Plants, frogs, limes… whatever.

You can post your photos on their site like you normally would, and submit it to the Green Things challenge from the “Edit photo” page. But hurry, because the mini-challenge wraps up this Monday, June 9th. Winners will be featured on the Capture Music City site, which means you’ll probably rack up at least a few extra votes.

Happy hunting!

Photo Of The Day: Tangled

This eerie shot by victorjames615 reminds us of the glory days of February when it wasn’t 95 degrees outside and humid. Not that we don’t love a good summer, but we like to be reminded from time to time that it wasn’t always this hot.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: We’d Rather Be Fishing Edition

Good morning, Nashville. It’s a rough world out there for anyone who has to venture downtown during CMApocalypse 2008. While we were safely holed up in the mighty Nashvillest HQ, Channel 2’s Brad Schmitt was taking a beating enough for us all. He had a particularly rough time of it yesterday when he was charged and attacked by a terrifying parade staffer while he was only trying to get us our news. We hate to have a laugh at Brad’s expense, but we feel like we’d be robbing you guys if we didn’t send you over to Nashville Is Talking for the raw footage. Watch as Brad is brutally accosted by the staffer twice and then savagely beaten by a small child with some inflatable sticks. Way to take one for the team, Brad.

  • Segregation in Metro schools? Residents are all upset over Metro’s plan to rezone some of the schools because they fear that gangs will become more of a problem and the new plans may unintentionally bring about racial and socioeconomic segregation.
  • Smoke and fire. Nashville firefighters are starting to raise questions about Fire Chief Steve Halford’s recent plan to eliminate almost 50 jobs in the department while expanding ambulance service. Just like everything else, we blame the economy.
  • Bits & pieces. Bonnaroo not selling much of anything this year … Rascal Flatts one of many to make a Hannah Montana cameo … George Jones is finally getting his guitar back that someone stole 46 years ago.

Thursday: Let’s Make It Official (CMApocalypse 2008)

There’s so much going on today that we’d grow old writing it all out (and you’d grow old reading it). So we’ll spare you the details. Instead, we’re opting for a rundown of the free and open to the public hotspots that are running all week, so if you have some free time on a lunch break or you’re looking for a way to entertain the kids, we’ve got you covered.

FUNZONE/HARD ROCK OUTDOOR STAGE
In the parking lot of the Hard Rock Cafe lies a “FunZone,” apparently. It’s technically open today from 9am-6pm, although the free concerts continue past 7pm (so we’re not sure how that works). The schedule for today includes NASCAR driver Bobby Labonte signing (10am-12pm), concerts (11:15am-1:50pm; 6:30pm-7:15pm), and LOTS of free samples.

FAMILYZONE by McDonalds/Dr. Pepper
A short walk away from the FunZone on 5th & Demonbreun lies the FamilyZone (very creative, CMA). Thursday is “Safety Day” at the FamilyZone. We’re also not sure what the theme has to do with anything. A wide variety of shows and events will be going on all day, plus your standard facepainting, magicians, inflatable bouncy houses, free food, and more. Check out the schedule to plan a strategic day for the kids. Strawberry Shortcake is even performing each day. We thought we left her back in the 90’s, but apparently she’s staging a comeback.

CHEVY (You guessed it) SPORTSZONE
Behind the Sommet Center, you’ll find the Chevy SportsZone. It’s open from 11am-5pm today, and once again will provide excessive free food & drink samples. Between outdoorsman competitions, more NASCAR/Pro fishing autograph sessions, and multiple (and possibly also excessive) K9s In Flight demonstrations, the SportsZone has a lot happening in a short amount of time. We can’t wait until Sunday’s tractor race. No, seriously.
