- The NASCAR Cup Series held its first race in Nashville (well, Lebanon, but close enough) in 37 years, with Kyle Larson winning the guitar trophy. The next racing event will be the road race through downtown in August.
- The National Museum of African American Music held its grand opening Saturday, a date specifically chose to correspond with the Juneteenth holiday, welcoming people from around the country. NMAAM is located at the Fifth+Broadway development downtown.
- A group repainted the “Black Lives Matter” mural on Woodland Street as well to mark the holiday.
- Police say a man and a woman stole an art piece from a boutique hotel in midtown early Friday morning. They are asking for help identifying the couple.
- The newly appointed Public Safety Coordinator is seeking ideas to reverse Nashville’s rise in violent crime, hoping to assemble different groups to work together towards that goal.
- Nashville SC dropped its first game of the season in a 2-0 road loss to the New York Red Bulls. They have a short week, with another game at home against Toronto FC on Wednesday.
- Vanderbilt University is at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, winning their first game of the double-elimination tournament stage over Arizona 7-6 in a dramatic extra-innings performance. They play North Carolina State tonight.
- Sylvan Park residents are voicing their displeasure of a builder that they say is changing the character of their neighborhood by tearing down one house and putting two in its place (which has been happening all over Nashville).
- The shuttered Woolworth restaurant downtown will reopen in early 2022 as a theater that seats 850 people, its owners say. The venue is the historic site of the lunch counter sit-ins during the Civil Rights movement.
- One of our favorite series in the Nashville Scene is “Walk A Mile,” with the latest installment covering the Berry Hill neighborhood.
