Happy Hour: Two Days To Turkeyday

  • After finally locating a Christmas tree for the city (though it would have been kinda cool to have the National Guard to airlift one from Mt. Juliet), NES chopped it down today despite protests from the environmentalists. The tree was 60 years old. [Tennessean]
  • A couple of generous Nashville celebrities kicked off the Thanksgiving season by deep-frying some turkeys (an art form previously unknown to us) for the homeless folks at the Nashville Rescue Mission. [WTVF]
  • The teenage terrorist who stirred things up at MTSU earlier this year was ordered by a judge to do a 30-day stint in a mental institution. [WKRN]
  • The rash of crime in normally-quiet Green Hills continues to astound, this time with a robbery-kidnapping of a homeowner and two teenagers. The five gunmen robbed their home, ordered them into their own car to drive to the ATM, then left them in the parking lot of Hillsboro High School and took their car. [Tennessean]

Photo Of The Day: November 25, 2008

Our Flickr friends always seem to catch an interesting perspective on everyday objects and locations that we tend to take for granted. This unique shot of some train tracks in town by elemak is another example of such a shot, and has us itching to hit the road for Thanksgiving.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

You Tell Us: What Are Your Plans For Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving has crept up on us again this year, and now we’re trying to get everything done really fast before we head out of town tomorrow. What are your plans for Thanksgiving? Do you lay low and have a nice meal at home? Do you hit the road and spend time with family and friends in other states? Are you the bravest of the brave (or maybe just crazed) who face those Black Friday sales?

Over the next few days, we’ll try to bring you some ideas and aids to make your Nashville Thanksgiving a little easier this year. But for now, what are your plans and traditions for Thanksgiving?

Bright & Early: High Aspirations Edition

Good morning, Nashville. With 7% of us wandering out jobless these days, the US Census Bureau has some good news for us: Census season means 3,000 new (temporary) jobs in Tennessee. The Bureau will be opening up three new offices this year in Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville, and they need workers who can drive around the community, knock on doors, and collect all that data. Okay okay, so they don’t promise excitement, but the pay starts at $9.75 per hour. Head over to the US Census Bureau website to apply.

  • Barbie enthusiast. A Nashville woman is rightfully pissed this morning after her $10,000 Barbie collection was stolen out of her car outside of the Rivergate Target. We’re not sure how one could rack up $10,000 worth of Barbies, but if you’re and Ebay or Craigslist lurker, keep an eye out.
  • Presidential visit. President Bush is visiting Fort Campbell today to give a shout out to a wounded soldier who has done some impressive volunteer work with the families of the deployed, and to talk about the global war on terror.
  • English Only drama round-up: More on Mayor Dean’s aide stepping down for a few months to help out with the fight …  Councilman Crafton pokes fun at the aide for stepping down … Councilman Crafton sounds off on a number of other things.
