Happy Hour: Let’s Build Them An Island
- As if anything else about the music industry needed to be exclusive, they can’t even be in the same nursing homes as the rest of us when they get old and senile. They’re building their own. [Tennessean]
- In case you missed it earlier, Mario’s caught on fire. The restaurant had been empty since the last fire in 2006, so fortunately no one was hurt. Mario’s, which had been open since 1965 before closing up shop in 2006, was a favorite hangout for celebrities. Judging by the pictures, we’re not thinking there’s much of it left. [WKRN]
- Falling behind on your child support payments? It may cost you your driver’s license, professional license, hunting license, fishing license, and everything-in-the-whole-world license. So pay up. [WTVF]
- Wilson County, who earlier this year wasn’t quite sure how they were going to keep their schools in session, has reluctantly decided to raise property taxes. For the children or something. [WKRN]

Breaking: Mario’s Is On Fire! [Where There's Smoke...]
We’re hearing reports that Mario’s restaurant at 2005 Broadway is on fire. From the pictures we’re seeing, it looks to be pretty bad. Fire crews are currently on the scene trying to get it under control, but we’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
UPDATE: Thanks to reader Eric Winchell for more pictures of the blaze–here, here, and here.
UPDATE [2:06 PM]: We’re now hearing that the fire is out for the most part, and may have mostly been confined to one building. Lots of ash and rubbernecking going down.
UPDATE [3:40 PM]: Read more details about the two-alarm fire at the Tennessean, WKRN, WTVF, and WSMV. WKRN (Channel 2) will have a live report from the scene in just a few minutes at 4pm.

Photo Of The Day: September 16, 2008

We’re always pretty amazed when we see some of Nashville’s smallest and scariest-looking critters captured with this much detail. From Flickr user pr9000:
I have since been informed (by both blog readers and my lovely wife) that this is a Yellow Garden Spider. Apparently they’re harmless and an important cog in Mother Nature’s machine blah blah blah … All I’m saying is that I swear I saw blood dripping from its fangs — yes, it had fangs — and it was grilling a sirloin on a hibachi that was just out the lens.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Excuse Me Mr. Medal, Would You Please Remain Seated And Fasten Your Seatbelt For The Remainder Of The Flight?

It’s not just flash drives that are sprouting legs and running off these days. Olympic swimmer Brendan Hansen was on a flight from Philly to Austin on Sunday night and his gold medal decided to hop out of his bag and stroll down the aisles of the plane. A do-gooder (or a bandit with a change of heart) who was headed to Nashville snatched it up and turned it in, but that hasn’t stopped the FBI from investigating The Case Of The Walking Gold Medal. Hansen didn’t realize his medal had sneaked out for a breath of fresh air until he arrived in Austin, TX and reported it missing. Either way, he’s getting his medal back and an anonymous Nashvillian or Nashville visitor is the hero of the story. Happy endings.
Thanks to @coffeeeyes for the tip!

Bright & Early: You Must Not Know Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Yesterday we heard all about Nashville universities in the news, both for better and for worse, but we guess we missed the story about Beyonce’s dad speaking at Fisk University yesterday. It wasn’t completely random since he graduated from Fisk and is the president and CEO of Music World Entertainment, but our inner 13-year olds still got a little excited when we read about it.
- Thanks, Williamson Co. If you haven’t read up on the Obama Waffle controversy in Williamson County, you’re probably missing out. It actually made national news!
- Sound of settling. It’s no secret that the Sounds have had one of the worst–if not the worst–season in the franchise’s history. The Brewers have already sent one head rolling, manager Frank Kemblas, who they ran off last week.
- Bits & pieces. A commuter train in Lebanon that may or may not have been the Music City Star crashed into a high schooler’s truck who may or may not have tried to beat the train across the tracks … More than 500 people in Middle Tennessee have complained about gas price gouging … Consequently, we also set records with our gas prices … TSU has more problems ahead than just their flash drives walking off.
