Happy Hour: New Friend Request Edition

  • Got a burning question for the presidential debate? Myspace will be handling that this year. Maybe! We think! Well, the Tennessean is doing that thing where they give us a headline without a story attached, but we love them anyway. [Tennessean]
  • Just as Gustav’s evacuees are on their way out, we were bracing ourselves for the influx of folks fleeing Ike, but it looks like Tennessee won’t be taking any more hurricane victims until we’ve recovered from the last round. [WSMV]
  • For all the GOPers among us, there’s a McCain-Palin party happening in a few minutes at the Douglas Corner Cafe on 8th Ave. at 6pm. There should be plenty of good music and good folks out showing their support for the Republican ticket. [TNGOP]
  • The city is officially shutting down the homeless gathering spot known as Tent City on September 22nd, threatening the residents with prosecution if they aren’t out by the deadline. We’re thinking someone should bring this one up at the Habitat meeting tonight. [Tennessean]

Free Blockbuster Rentals All Month [Only In Nashville]

Oh, how sweet September is in Nashville. Blockbuster is celebrating its 20th year in town by heaping free rentals into our outstretched palms. For the entire month of September, any non-new release rental is free at Blockbuster (limit 1 per customer per day). No other rental is required, and Williamson County stores are participating too. We think this is a pretty generous way to celebrate 20 years in town, and we may have to put our Netflix accounts on hold for the month while we take advantage of Blockbuster’s little reminder that they still exist.

Photo Of The Day: September 8, 2008

We’re sort of ashamed to say that we’ve never actually been to the Country Music Hall of Fame, but this fun and colorful shot by nola.agent makes us want to venture out there sometime soon, if not just to see if we can track down this wall.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Postsecret Visits Vandy This October

Fans of Postsecret unite: Frank Warren, the creator of the wildly successful anonymous postcard project, is coming to Vanderbilt University in October to speak about his experiences with Postsecret. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster, which is a little disappointing to us. The last time Frank was in town, he set up shop at the Brentwood Borders and admission was free. It’s a rather strong testimony to the tremendous popularity of Postsecret, and judging from the Facebook page for the event, it may be best to buy your tickets sooner rather than later.

We hate to be the naysayers here, but when we saw Frank speak at Borders it was underwhelming at best. The secrets speak for themselves, but there were very few secrets displayed and a little too much lovey-dovey kumbaya chatter happening at the same time. What we’d really love to see is a Postsecret exhibit come to Nashville. While we dream of that day, we do encourage those who haven’t seen Frank speak yet to give it a shot at least once. The stories are inspiring and the secrets unbelievable.

Bright & Early: Affordable Shmaffordable Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Members of one north Nashville community are all up in arms about affordable housing, but probably not in the way that you’d think. After Habitat for Humanity proposed a plan to build an affordable neighborhood behind the existing one, residents loudly protested, saying that the Habitat project would bring crime and drive down their property values. Habitat disagrees, but they’ll be hashing out the details at a community meeting tonight.

  • Apartment blaze. A fire ripped through the Brentwood Downs apartment complex yesterday and left 18 units charred and several more damaged. Thanks to a heroic neighbor who woke up several of the residents, no one was badly hurt. Our hearts especially go out to a couple of our readers and friends who were affected, but we’re glad you guys are okay.
  • Bittersweet. The Titans mowed right over Jacksonville in yesterday’s season opener, taking them down 17-10. Unfortunately, Vince Young left the game with a sprained knee late in the 4th quarter and no one knows yet how long he’ll be out. They should be taking a look at the injury today, so hopefully we’ll know more.
  • Monday morning bonus. Why we love Georgia: Georgia town pays $1M for strip club, then sets it on fire.
  • Bits & pieces. Country wanna-be Jessica Simpson was off wooing the crowds at her Grand Ole Opry debut this weekend. Or at least trying to … Hey, did you know that Belmont’s hosting a presidential debate? … The state has issued a final warning to Metro Schools about the use of federal money, threatening to freeze it if they can’t spend it right … TSU alumni came to the rescue of about 900 students who were about to be kicked out for not paying their tuition.
