Happy Hour: Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes
- The killer tomatoes are here with three tomato-linked salmonella cases having been confirmed today in Williamson and Rutherford counties. The TN Department of Health still hasn’t figured out where they came from, so steer clear, folks. [WKRN]
- Like a biblical plague, a herd of cicadas has made its first appearance in a Nashville park after hiding out underground for the last 17 years. The thumb-sized bugs will be mating and depositing their larvae underground, which will emerge in another 17 years for our viewing pleasure. Kind of cool, but also kind of gross. [Tennessean]
- A shipping truck that was supposed to be delivering $21,500 worth of beer to Putnam County finally showed up–but without the beer. We call that cruel and unusual. [Tennessean]
- The Music City Motorplex at the State Fairgrounds apparently owes $487,000 in taxes they never paid. Unsurprisingly, they’re trying to get out of it. [WSMV]

Getting Creative: RTA Helps You Share Rides
Yesterday we talked about the city’s plan for new sidewalks and bikeways. Now we’re hearing about the not-so-new but growing Rideshare program by the Regional Transportation Authority. The RTA says that the demand for carpooling has gone up by over 100% since we all started paying an arm and a leg for gas. You can always try to catch rides with your friends, but if no one you know is headed in the same direction as you, RTA’s Rideshare website could be another great option. With a database of more than 3,000 Middle Tennessee drivers, you’re bound to find someone. We dug through the website a bit and can tell you that it’s really easy to use: Just enter some simple information about your route and schedule and the system will match you with any other available drivers from the database. Another neat part of it is the Emergency Ride Home program, which guarantees registered commuters an emergency voucher for a taxi or rental car up to 8 times a year in case you can’t make it to your usual carpool, vanpool, or express bus.

Photo Of The Day: June 12, 2008
Here in Music City, we’ll make music with whatever we’ve got. We appreciate the creativity of these guys, captured by Rwilliams718, who are taking beatboxing to a whole new level (zing!)
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest†if you’re feeling lazy.

Enough Already: More Mixed Reviews By People Who Don’t Live Here
We’ve already mentioned it once this morning, but the local blogosphere has been buzzing with the recent news that Nashville is ranked just 4th on the list of cities with the highest rate of violent crime per capita, and our friends in Memphis made it all the way to 2nd place. Way to be, Tennessee.
In other mixed review mania, our state has been given the distinguished honor of being ranked the 42nd state for children’s health and well-being. At least we’re up from 43rd last year. Seems kind of funny, though, given that Vanderbilt’s Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital is ranked the 23rd best children’s hospital in the nation (for the 2nd year in a row). Weird.
And lastly, we can’t forget how Tennessee has the highest rate of personal bankruptcy in the nation, coming in at just about double the national average.
We need some good news after that one. Anyone know of any recent rankings that paint our city and state in a better light?

Bright & Early: Neighborhood Cleanup Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Thanks to Metro Police, there’s a lot less heroin on the street than there was yesterday. After a month of undercover work, they arrested 19 people in connection with a local drug ring and confiscated 46 ounces of heroin valued at around $180K. Police are saying it might be the biggest heroin bust in Nashville’s history. We’re just happy to hear that our streets are a little cleaner this morning.
- Epic tale of the oversize load. We feel obligated to pass on this traffic caveat from TDOT for tonight through Saturday morning. A truck with a giant load of military antennas will be trudging across the state really, really slowly and clogging up most lanes of eastbound I-40 the whole way. It’s scheduled to crawl around Nashville by way of 440 on Friday night, so consider yourselves warned. We’re sad, though… If it had an internet tracker, we could’ve liveblogged it.
- Even more mixed reviews. Despite Metro’s truly impressive drug-raiding skills, the violent crime rate is a different story. The FBI ranked Nashville as the #4 city for violent crime, with Memphis rolling in at a cool #2. On second thought, maybe we won’t be going out tonight.
- Bits & pieces. Alison Krauss and Robert Plant are up for some serious Americana awards … School Board set to announce major changes this week … Metro Council and Sports Authority served with federal subpoena for Boots’ ongoing trainwreck … DC group lodges complaint with FEC against Rep. Marsha Blackburn.
