Bright & Early: The Wheels On The Bus Edition
Good morning, Nashville. The hot button topic in Nashville this week is mass transit, following this week’s unveiling of the Broadway-West End Corridor Study – a study commissioned to explore the best mass transit options from East Nashville all the way to Harding and White Bridge Rd in West Nashville. The verdict? Mayor Dean is pushing for a $136 million bus rapid transit system with dedicated bus lanes. Meanwhile, existing express bus fares will increase by $0.50 on January 6 to $4 per trip. In other news:
- Fire’d. Nashville Fire Department Paramedic Kevin Kennedy was fired this week for posting homophobic comments on Facebook about two coworkers. Kennedy was suspended for the first Facebook incident, but followed up with another set of choice remarks about the same coworkers in late September.
- Amazonian. Tennessee approved $20 million in economic development funding for seven companies, including Amazon, GM and Sprint.
- Hand it over. If you owe money to the city of Franklin, look out! They’re coming for you. The city is trying to claim $670,000 in unpaid fines, tickets and court costs.
- Country Music Hall of Bling. The Country Music Hall of Fame received its largest donation to date – $10 million from the Country Music Association. The money will go toward their $75 million expansion campaign, which will double the size of the Hall of Fame.
- Bits & pieces. TDOT will investigate the recent 55-car pileup in Hendersonville … The Preds won 2-1 over the Calgary Flames Tuesday night … A new food truck is serving food straight from the owner’s farm in Williamson County … Viral videos taped in the Green Hills Mall are always fun … The Nashville Zoo’s 7-year-old giraffe, Savannah, died from pregnancy complications this week … West Nashville residents can now eat more chikin … A woman was robbed in Centennial Park by three people brandishing brooms and chains.

- The DA has dropped the false drivers license information charges against Kenny Britt. [WTVF]

The Weekendist: December 3-4 Edition
Happy weekend, Nashville. With the plethora of holiday events this weekend (shopping, shopping, shopping), you could almost fool us into thinking that it’s already Christmas. Even though December is so fresh that we haven’t even flipped over our calendars, ChristmaHanuKwanzaakah will be here before we know it. So grab a jacket, some mittens and a steaming cup of hot cocoa and browse through this weekend’s holiday markets, art crawls and more.
Toy Drive at the Nashville Zoo (PDF alert!). Saturday & Sunday, December 3 & 4 from 9am-4pm, free admission to the zoo with each new toy donation. Looking for a low-cost way to spend the day with the kids? This weekend, Metro Police are collecting donated new toys at the Nashville Zoo. Bring a new toy, get a complimentary admission ticket – it’s that easy.
Porter Flea Handmade Holiday Market. Saturday, December 3, 12-8pm at East Park Community Center, free. We can’t think of a more perfect time for a handmade artisan market – If you’re looking for unique gifts for the holidays, this is your place. We’ll be busting down the doors at noon to get first pick of the goods, then fuel up at our favorite food trucks.
Local Table Holiday Market. Saturday, December 3, 5:30pm at the Nashville Farmers Market, free. Oh hey. Look at that. Another holiday market! We’ve missed the past few Night Markets at the Nashville Farmers Market, so we’re pretty excited to be getting a mini-second chance. Libations will be on hand for purchase (to increase your holiday cheer), then settle in for some local shopping, live music, tasty food, crafts for the kids and more.
First Saturday Art Crawl. Saturday, December 3, 6-9pm in downtown Nashville between 4th & 5th Avenues, free. Holiday art crawls are always our favorites (as long as we remember to bundle up appropriately). There’s something special about wandering from gallery to gallery, sipping hot (spiked) cider and enjoying the twinkling lights in downtown Nashville. It’s free and friendly for all ages (sans the spiked cider, of course), so bring the whole family.
Five Points Holiday Open House. Saturday, December 3, 6-9:30pm in East Nashville’s Five Points, free. Seventeen East Nashville businesses are offering drinks, munchies, sales, specials, freebies, crafts and events for the kiddos tonight in Five Points. Head to the source for a full list, which ranges from Eastside Cycles to Pied Piper Creamery to the Art & Invention Gallery (swing in there for their 10th annual Holiday Art Show).
Preds vs. Sabres. Saturday, December 3, 7pm at Bridgestone Arena, tickets start at $25. Had enough with the holiday this, holiday that? Head to the Bridgestone Arena to see the Preds play their first home game since before Thanksgiving. They’re coming off an impressive win in Vancouver, and we’re fired up to see them destroy the Sabres.

Bright & Early: Just Barge On In Edition
Good morning, Nashville. A barge struck one of the Woodland Street Bridge piers during rush hour last night, causing a pretty impressive traffic jam and setting off an entertaining game of internet “telephone.” The tale ends much less dramatically than anticipated – After initially predicting that the bridge would remain closed for inspection through this morning, Metro Public Works inspectors gave it a once-over and reopened the bridge within an hour of its closing. That’s good news for tonight’s Christmas parade, since it begins by crossing the Woodland Street Bridge.
- Rallyin’. “Occupy” groups from all over Tennessee are in Nashville for a statewide Occupy Tennessee rally, including 4 protesters from Occupy Clarksville who left on foot last night. Protesters will hold meetings, educational sessions and are planning a midnight march on Saturday.
- Victory! The Preds pulled off an impressive 6-5 win last night in Vancouver, scoring on their first two shots of the game and finally pulling ahead with less than 2 minutes on the clock.
- Bits & pieces. Yesterday’s 45-car pileup in Hendersonville impacted 174 cars and spanned more than a mile … That guy with the monkeys in Shelbyville is going to jail for four days … If you’re not already avoiding Green Hills, Public Works says you might want to avoid Abbott-Martin Road while they install sidewalks … A woman is safe after being kidnapped at the Cool Springs mall, forced to withdraw money from an ATM, then returned to the parking lot … Predictably, Herman Cain’s appearance at MTSU last night did not go unbesmirched, though he seemed to handle the heckling well … Nissan reported an impressive 19.4% increase in sales for November … The Tennessean has a new executive editor … 350,000 books will go to low-income Tennessee children … On the flip side, some jerks stole 2,000 books from low-income Tennessee children.

Bright & Early: Be Careful Out There Edition
Good morning, Nashville. A nasty wreck on Vietnam Veterans Blvd in Hendersonville snarled traffic for hours this morning during rush hour. Approximately 20 injuries and one death have been confirmed; the crash involved a school bus, semi truck and at least 45 other vehicles. Vietnam Veterans Blvd will probably remain closed through this afternoon, so take another route if you’re in the area.
- Future winners. Congrats to all the Nashvillians nominated for Grammy awards this year, including first-time nominees The Civil Wars and Dave Barnes (and maybe some others, but c’mon, that list is long)!
- Contributing. The Contributor, Nashville’s homeless street paper, will publish twice a month in 2012 as part of of their “Next Step” initiative, which also aims to double donor support next year.
- Drama llama. A missing persons report was filed yesterday for Mindy McCready’s 5 year old son Zander, after the singer took him from her father’s home in Florida. They’re safe and sound in Nashville, but Mindy says she won’t be able to comply with a court order to return the boy to Florida because she’s 7 months pregnant with twins.
- Sinkhole beat. You know we love our sinkhole updates around here! The latest opened up on I-65 in the Rivergate area on Tuesday night, “sending boulder-like pieces of concrete across all lanes of the interstate.” Um, yeah.
- Bits & pieces. Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain will address students at MTSU tonight … Tim McGraw will be allowed to keep recording while his legal battle with Curb Records plays out … Forbes named the Preds 25th most valuable NHL franchise … Lipscomb will offer associates degrees for the first time ever, but only for inmates … Trade in a gun (in any condition) for a $25 Kroger gift card on December 10 … Speaking of guns, TSA has confiscated three of them at BNA this month … 100 libraries across Tennessee will soon share an online catalog … The IRS has money for 1,779 Tennesseans due to undeliverable addresses.
