Bright & Early: Helping Hand Edition
Good morning, Nashville. The North American Street Newspaper Association’s annual convention is being held in Nashville this weekend. Staff from street papers similar to Nashville’s own The Contributor will gather to discuss strategies, learn from each other and celebrate successes – like Nashville. The Contributor, just 4 years old, is the most successful street paper in North America with 400 vendors who sell an average of 110,000 papers a month. As many as a third of them have been able to earn enough money to get off the streets. The growth hasn’t come without its difficulties, but Contributor director Tasha French cites the “very good, giving community” in Nashville as the reason for the paper’s success.
- Marshal Gill. Vince Gill will be the Grand Marshal for this year’s downtown Christmas parade, held on December 2. Mayor Dean has also dubbed this week “Vince Gill Week” to honor the singer for his longtime support of Nashville through benefit and volunteer work.
- Tax day redux. If you’re one of the 169,000 Tennesseans who filed for a six month tax extension back in April, you’ve got until Monday to get your taxes in.
- Robberies. Let’s chat about a handful of interesting robbers who are on the loose right now. First, there’s this guy who robbed the East Nashville Family Dollar and has a tattoo of green wings on the back of his head. Next, we have this teen who tried to rob a Mapco by pointing his finger at the clerk. Then we have the Murfreesboro Pharmacy Robber, who has been using tactics like chainsawing through siding and ramming pickup trucks through brick walls to steal prescription narcotics. And finally, the sheriff in Hawkins County, TN is looking for a “stout” thief, as a 450 pound pig has gone missing from its pen.
- Bits & pieces. The Preds lost their season opener last night to the Coyotes, 5-2. Better luck next time, boys … Taylor Swift has donated 6,000 books to the Reading, PA library near where she grew up … Keyboard player and vocalist for the Charlie Daniels Band, Joel “Taz” DeGregorio was killed Wednesday night in a car crash while driving to meet the tour bus … Nissan has partnered with the Preds as the franchise’s non-luxury import automotive partner. The deal will rename the front entrance of the arena as the Nissan Entrance, among other things … The Human Rights Campaign’s On The Road to Equality bus tour will stop in Nashville today, spreading the message of LGBT equality … Justin Bieber has posted a behind-the-scenes video of the making of his newest music video, which was filmed in Franklin.

A Beer Fest For Every Season: 12 South Winter Warmer Tickets On Sale Tomorrow
What’s the best way to keep from freezing in the cold month of December? Did you say “turn on the heat” or “a pile of blankets and a crackling fire in the fireplace”? Okay, so maybe you’re right, but we like to think that a stiff drink works just as well. Enter 12 South Winter Warmer, a new beer festival coming to 12 South’s Sevier Park on December 10. An outdoor beer festival in December may seem a little strange, but we bet attendees will be toasty warm after tossing back a beer or ten.
12 South Winter Warmer will showcase the finest stouts, porters, barley wines, winter seasonals and barrel-aged beers from 25 craft breweries, both visiting and local. Food & treats from 12 South Taproom, Burger Up, Jonbalaya Catering, Begley’s Brats & Dogs, Olive & Sinclair and The Bloomy Rind will be available for purchase to soak up some of that booze sloshing around in your belly. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, and you’d better get them fast! The fest can only accommodate 750 people, and you can be sure it will sell out.
UPDATE: Whoa! Tickets sold out in just a few hours. We told you to get them fast.

The Civil Wars Headline The Ryman January 12, Tickets On Sale October 21
The Civil Wars have announced their first headlining performance at The Ryman, set for January 12. We’ve watched them go from playing for a handful of people at the French Quarter Cafe to playing for thousands on the Adele tour and selling out theaters on their own, and we’re pretty dang proud that Nashvillians can claim we-heard-them-first bragging rights. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 21 and you can bet we’ll be first in line.

Got $25? Get Lucky With Sweet Seats To WICKED At TPAC
We’ve been looking forward to opening day of WICKED at TPAC for ages, but we haven’t been looking forward to the price tag for tickets. Luckily, TPAC knows exactly how to cater to the cheapskates in our souls, and they’re doing just that by offering a limited $25 ticket lottery a few hours before the show each night. Interested? Show up two and a half hours before showtime to throw your name in the hat, then stick around for a half hour and see if you scored the goods. If your name is drawn, you can purchase two sweet orchestra seats for just $25 each.
WICKED opens at TPAC’s Andrew Jackson Hall on October 19, running through November 6. Regular tickets run $40-160 and can be purchased here.

Jack White Covers U2′s “Love Is Blindness” [Things Jack White Does]
Oh Jack White, you’re always up to something, aren’t you? Whether it’s throwing a divorce party, producing Insane Clown Posse tunes, becoming Nashville’s Music City Ambassador or shenanigans with Stephen Colbert, we’ve learned to never be surprised at what the man has got up his sleeve. Today’s offering: An intense, very Jack-White rendition of U2′s “Love Is Blindness” for Q Magazine‘s tribute to Achtung Baby. Have a listen.

Don’t Miss This: Last 2011 Live On The Green With Here Come The Mummies

We’re sad to see it go, but the last Live on the Green of the year is going to be a doozy. An early Halloween party of sorts, this Thursday’s Live on the Green promises costume contests and other spooky festivities, and is headlined by an act we’ve been looking forward to ever since they announced the lineup – Here Come The Mummies. If you’ve ever wanted to see a bunch of anonymous professional musicians dressed up like mummies and getting their funk on, here’s your chance. It’s bound to be a scream (Get it? Get it?!).
Last Live on the Green of 2011! Thursday, October 14 in Public Square Park, 6pm, free. Featuring RhythMystik Tribal Percussion, Eastern Block, H-Beam and Here Come The Mummies.

Jersey Shore’s Snooki & JWOWW Tanning In Nashville This Saturday
A little bird tells us that Jersey Shore cast members Snooki and JWOWW will be in Nashville this Saturday for the Smart Tan Downtown 2011 trade show & conference, each shilling their own brand of sunless tanning something-or-another. Turns out that JWOWW will even spray lucky conference attendees with her new JWOWW Continuous Sunless Spray! We’re not sure how you could pass that up. Castmate Pauly D also has a new indoor tanning solution that will be represented at the conference, but sadly, he won’t be in attendance.
It wouldn’t be the Jersey Shore without a lot of alcohol in a grimy club, and Snooki and JWOWW are taking care of that by hosting separate private parties downtown on Saturday night. They’re exclusive to conference attendees and you have to stop by their respective booths at the trade show to snag an invite, but be our guest if you want to figure out a way to weasel in. And the rest of you? Consider yourselves warned.
