Bright & Early: Helping Hand Edition

Good morning, Nashville. The North American Street Newspaper Association’s annual convention is being held in Nashville this weekend. Staff from street papers similar to Nashville’s own The Contributor will gather to discuss strategies, learn from each other and celebrate successes – like Nashville. The Contributor, just 4 years old, is the most successful street paper in North America with 400 vendors who sell an average of 110,000 papers a month. As many as a third of them have been able to earn enough money to get off the streets. The growth hasn’t come without its difficulties, but Contributor director Tasha French cites the “very good, giving community” in Nashville as the reason for the paper’s success.

A Beer Fest For Every Season: 12 South Winter Warmer Tickets On Sale Tomorrow

What’s the best way to keep from freezing in the cold month of December? Did you say “turn on the heat” or “a pile of blankets and a crackling fire in the fireplace”? Okay, so maybe you’re right, but we like to think that a stiff drink works just as well. Enter 12 South Winter Warmer, a new beer festival coming to 12 South’s Sevier Park on December 10. An outdoor beer festival in December may seem a little strange, but we bet attendees will be toasty warm after tossing back a beer or ten.

12 South Winter Warmer will showcase the finest stouts, porters, barley wines, winter seasonals and barrel-aged beers from 25 craft breweries, both visiting and local. Food & treats from 12 South Taproom, Burger Up, Jonbalaya Catering, Begley’s Brats & Dogs, Olive & Sinclair and The Bloomy Rind will be available for purchase to soak up some of that booze sloshing around in your belly. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, and you’d better get them fast! The fest can only accommodate 750 people, and you can be sure it will sell out.

UPDATE: Whoa! Tickets sold out in just a few hours. We told you to get them fast.

12 South Winter Warmer, December 10 in Sevier Park, 11am-4pm, $45. Tickets can be purchased here beginning Friday, October 13. Strictly 21+.

The Civil Wars Headline The Ryman January 12, Tickets On Sale October 21

The Civil Wars have announced their first headlining performance at The Ryman, set for January 12. We’ve watched them go from playing for a handful of people at the French Quarter Cafe to playing for thousands on the Adele tour and selling out theaters on their own, and we’re pretty dang proud that Nashvillians can claim we-heard-them-first bragging rights. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 21 and you can bet we’ll be first in line.

Bright & Early: Choose Your Weapon Edition

Good morning, Nashville. In a stroke of irony at its finest, state Representative Curry Todd, author of the infamous guns in bars bill, was arrested this week and charged with a DUI and possession of a handgun while under the influence. Imagine that! In other news:

Got $25? Get Lucky With Sweet Seats To WICKED At TPAC

We’ve been looking forward to opening day of WICKED at TPAC for ages, but we haven’t been looking forward to the price tag for tickets. Luckily, TPAC knows exactly how to cater to the cheapskates in our souls, and they’re doing just that by offering a limited $25 ticket lottery a few hours before the show each night. Interested? Show up two and a half hours before showtime to throw your name in the hat, then stick around for a half hour and see if you scored the goods. If your name is drawn, you can purchase two sweet orchestra seats for just $25 each.

WICKED opens at TPAC’s Andrew Jackson Hall on October 19, running through November 6. Regular tickets run $40-160 and can be purchased here.

Calling All Banjos: Year’s Last Full Moon Pickin’ Party On Friday

As the cooler weather rolls into the midstate, the summer festivities are finally winding down and making way for fall.  One of those festivities is the Full Moon Pickin’ Party, put on by Friends of Warner Parks, which features four things we love about Tennessee: Music, food, booze and the great outdoors. The parties run from May through October every time there’s a full moon, meaning that this Friday’s event is your last chance of the season to catch this bit of Nashville magic. What exactly is a pickin’ party, you may ask? It’s just a bunch of folks getting together on a moonlit night and jamming out to some bluegrass over food (for purchase!) and drinks (included!) Tickets are a little steep at $15 in advance or $20 at the door, but they include a couple of drink tickets and all proceeds fund flood cleanup for the parks and all sorts of awesome educational programs. In addition to a great bluegrass lineup on the main stage, folks are invited to bring a couple of camping chairs and bluegrass instruments of their own for some impromptu jam sessions throughout the evening. Carting in your own approved instrument will get you a heftily discounted admission of just five bucks.

The last Full Moon Pickin’ Party of the season, benefiting Friends of Warner Parks, happens this Friday, October 14th from 7 to 11 PM at the Equestrian Barn on Old Hickory Blvd. Order tickets here, or just show up!

Oh Jack White, you’re always up to something, aren’t you? Whether it’s throwing a divorce party, producing Insane Clown Posse tunes, becoming Nashville’s Music City Ambassador or shenanigans with Stephen Colbert, we’ve learned to never be surprised at what the man has got up his sleeve. Today’s offering: An intense, very Jack-White rendition of U2′s “Love Is Blindness” for Q Magazine‘s tribute to Achtung Baby. Have a listen.

Jersey Shore’s Snooki & JWOWW Tanning In Nashville This Saturday

A little bird tells us that Jersey Shore cast members Snooki and JWOWW will be in Nashville this Saturday for the Smart Tan Downtown 2011 trade show & conference, each shilling their own brand of sunless tanning something-or-another. Turns out that JWOWW will even spray lucky conference attendees with her new JWOWW Continuous Sunless Spray! We’re not sure how you could pass that up. Castmate Pauly D also has a new indoor tanning solution that will be represented at the conference, but sadly, he won’t be in attendance.

It wouldn’t be the Jersey Shore without a lot of alcohol in a grimy club, and Snooki and JWOWW are taking care of that by hosting separate private parties downtown on Saturday night. They’re exclusive to conference attendees and you have to stop by their respective booths at the trade show to snag an invite, but be our guest if you want to figure out a way to weasel in. And the rest of you? Consider yourselves warned.
