Bright & Early: Meep Meep Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We hope you enjoyed your long weekend as much as we did, and if you’re not one of the 45,500 people who gathered around the giant U2 space ship on Saturday, you can read all about it over at the Tennessean. Or maybe you were one of the 125,000 people who headed downtown for the fireworks last night and pumped $5.6 million into our city’s economy. In that case, we salute you! And if you were none of the above, well, we hope you found fun in some other places.
- Gallatin fireworks canceled. Unfortunately the folks out in Gallatin didn’t get to enjoy a fireworks show this year, as the pyrotechnic company in charge of the show took the city’s money and then promptly disappeared, forcing city officials to cancel it last-minute. Since part of the money was donated by nonprofit Faces of Hope, the organization is teaming up with Gallatin and local law enforcement to get to the bottom of it.
- Tag, you’re it. Over the past few months, Nashville has developed a bit of a graffiti problem and Metro is trying to figure out the best way to deal with it. A string of vandalism acts targeting everything from the State Capitol to the pedestrian bridge to local businesses has city officials rethinking their approach.
- Bits & pieces. Some scientists believe that high blood pressure could be a cause of “cognitive decline” in the South, brought on by all the unhealthy things we eat … TennCare’s new $10.5 million program to help people quit smoking went into effect on Friday … Planned Parenthood is still getting by without state funding … Metro’s hotels are recovering from the recession a little more slowly than surrounding counties.

Bright & Early: Letter Of The Law Edition
Good morning, Nashville, and happy July! July 1st is that magical day when all those new laws take effect that were debated and passed in this year’s legislative session. Among this year’s laws are the removal of the one-year age limit on a child being breastfed in public, a crackdown on obscene bumperstickers (to our knowledge, TruckNutz™ are still okay), a sky lantern ban, ads on TDOT emergency trucks, and the removal of words like “idiot,” “lunatic,” and “mentally retarded” from Tennessee code, and that controversial teacher tenure change.
- Free parking program starts today. Metro is also starting up the green parking program today. So if you drive one of these cars, you can fill out this application form and take it to one of the Davidson County Clerk’s offices and pick up a $10 permit for free parking at all of these meters. As for the rest of us, we can get our permits by donating to organizations that award carbon offset credits, though we’d recommend checking with the Davidson County Clerk first to ensure the organization is eligible.
- Vanderbilt bookstore coming to West End. The gaping bookstore hole that Borders left at the corner of West End and 35th will soon be occupied by Vanderbilt’s student bookstore. Vandy is partnering with Barnes & Noble to operate the bookstore which will sell books for the general public in addition to school books and merchandise.
- Bits & pieces. Metro Councilman Jamie Hollin wants to formally recognize the high school students who protested the “Don’t Say Gay” bill … Lebanon’s police chief is seeking to ban bath salts and incense … Following a News Channel 5 report, Metro Schools officials are vowing to continue testing schools for dangerous radon levels … ‘Tis the season for air quality alerts … It’s going to be a hot, hot July 4th … The Tennessean laid off more than a dozen newsroom employees yesterday including longtime sports columnist Joe Biddle and entertainment writer Heather Byrd.
