Riff’s Fine Street Food: Creative Caribbean, Asian Flavors On Wheels
Yes, we’re writing about another new Nashville food truck. No, we’re not apologizing for that. Riff’s Fine Street Food is ready to hit the streets this Saturday, and since it’s been a week since we wrote about the debut of Little Filipino and a whopping one day since the debut of Moovers & Shakers, we’re ready for some new truck food to fill our bellies.
The menu at Riff’s will lean heavily toward Caribbean and Asian dishes, but it won’t stop there. Chefs B.J. Lofback and Carlos Davis are passionate about serving fresh, local, sustainable ingredients and forming partnerships with local farmers, and that makes their menu possibilities endless. They’ll be starting out with a few of their Caribbean specialty staples this weekend, but expect to be surprised every time you visit the truck. They sum up their mission better than we ever could:
How do you take something from the streets of Bangkok or Oaxaca and expect to do it any justice on the street in Nashville? No more than you can expect to replicate a Jimi Hendrix guitar riff note for note. But what you do is take what you’ve learned from those masters and create. Some things will be note for note, and liberties will be taken with others. This is what you can expect from our food. Like a really good cover band the song list will change, but there will be many standards.
Riff’s big debut is this Saturday, May 7 and they’re rolling out with two events. They’ll have a stand at the Richland Avenue Home & Garden Tour from 11am-5pm, while simultaneously unveiling the truck at the first Musician’s Corner from 3-6pm! Expect an all-Caribbean menu this weekend, featuring Jerk Chicken with their special homemade jerk seasoning, beans & rice and more. After this weekend, they’ll have a regular spot at the Woodbine Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and are currently seeking out spots for a Thursday-Saturday lunch route.
Hungry for some fine street food? Keep up with Riff’s whereabouts and what they’re serving on Twitter and Facebook. And while we’re talking about Twitter, you can keep up with all of the local food trucks by following our Nashville Food Trucks Twitter list.

Bright & Early: Snap Crackle Pop Edition
Good morning, Nashville. As areas along the Mississippi River continue to flood, President Obama declared a state of emergency for our neighbors in Dyer, Shelby, Lake and Stewart counties. The flooding, said to be caused by heavy snowmelts in Minnesota and North Dakota, has led hundreds of folks in Memphis to evacuate to shelters and officials have closed many streets in the areas closest to the river. Meanwhile, the Army Corps of Engineers has been busy blowing holes in some of the levees to the north to hopefully lower the water levels. According to the National Weather Service, the flood is forecast to be “a lot nastier” than the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.
- Anti-Muslim bullying training for Murfreesboro. Teachers and principals in schools across Rutherford County are undergoing new training specifically aimed at preventing bullying against Muslim students. Though they estimate they’ve had about 15 reported incidents, school officials say it’s not a big problem and the training is a proactive measure.
- Pay up. The Amazon sales tax debate is up again, with several lawmakers filing a bill that hopes to force Amazon.com to charge sales tax in Tennessee once they build their two new distribution centers in Chattanooga and Bradley County. They estimate that this could bring another $8 million in revenue to the state.
- Bits & pieces. President Obama will be paying a visit to Fort Campbell tomorrow to greet soldiers coming home from Afghanistan … The MDHA just secured a $486,000 grant to assist homeless folks in Nashville, and they plan on using it to fund 50 additional shelter beds … Titans QB Chris Simms was acquitted on all charges related to his arrest last year for allegedly driving under the influence of marijuana … The Preds are shuffling things around a bit after Steve Sullivan’s Game 3 injury that is slated to keep him out of Game 4 … A Metro school bus driver appeared on Oprah for the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Riders and was honored for her civil rights activism.

A Milkshake Truck Update: The Shaking Starts Today
When we wrote about Moovers & Shakers a few weeks ago, they were trying to raise $5,000 in just a few days to make their dream of bringing a mobile soda parlor to Nashville a reality. The good news is that they met their goal! The even better news is that Moovers & Shakers will make their grand debut today (Wednesday) at Belmont University. It’s Dead Day at Belmont, that glorious day before final exams with no classes so that everyone can study for finals (but we all know that’s not happening until at least midnight tonight). They don’t have their truck yet, so they’ll be sharing with their friends at Pizza Buds as they throw a big party and serve milkshakes on the lawn all day. Join Moovers & Shakers, Pizza Buds and The Grilled Cheeserie today between 12-5pm for some delicious, lactose-loaded truck food and entertainment from their favorite musician friends. We can’t promise that you won’t feel awkward and out of place on a college campus (for our readers who are post-college, of course), but after you take a peek at Moovers & Shaker’s menu for the day, we don’t think you’ll mind.
If you miss Moovers & Shakers today, you can catch them on May 21 at fEASTival Nashville (and maybe they’ll have our Nashvillest shake by then… if we can ever decide what to put in it!). We’re not sure we can wait that long, so we’ll be braving Dead Day (it’s not as scary as it sounds) to get shakin’.
Moovin’ and Shakin’ Into Summer. Wednesday, May 4 from 12-5pm, Belmont University South Lawn (just follow the sound of the music).

Bright & Early: Get To Work Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Davidson County Criminal Court Clerk David Torrence could be penalized up to losing his job after WSMV planted a camera outside his house and found that he only works three days per week and pulls in a six-figure, taxpayer-funded salary. They also found that he uses his county car for liquor store runs and hired his sons into two jobs in the office without posting the positions first. Though he was pretty unapologetic in WSMV’s initial interview, he has since publicly apologized and promised to go to work at some point. Davidson County taxpayers have since been blowing up Mayor Dean’s phone, and even Mayor Dean has stated the Torrence needs to work a normal schedule. Several Metro Councilmembers have called for his resignation or removal from office and District Attorney Torry Johnson is looking into ways to make that happen. Trouble is, he was just elected to a fifth four-year term.
- Preds lose in OT. The Preds did another overtime dance with the Canucks in last night’s Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals, but eventually lost 3-2. The Canucks currently lead the series 2-1 and Game 4 is on Thursday at Smashville.
- Suspicious package closes down James Robertson. Metro Police shut down a chunk of James Robertson Parkway yesterday afternoon when an attorney in the Robertson Parkway Tower received a suspicious package. Turns out the package was legitimately suspicious, as it was a box containing a stack of papers that had been hollowed out and stuffed with a “cell phone with wires hanging out of it.” It was removed by one of those fancy robot things and Metro Police haven’t commented on whether or not it could’ve hurt someone.
- Bits & pieces. Chris Johnson wants to race you, and it’s for a good cause … The TVA says the damage done to its power grid by last week’s storms will take months to repair … Nashville’s fire chief says that our emergency response has improved greatly since the May flood … The controversial Sportsplex that Belmont was building in Edgehill is officially open for business … Nashville is working on the mosquito problem on the northside this weekend.

Bright & Early: It’s Been A Year Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Yesterday and today mark the one year anniversary of the historic Nashville flood. It’s hard to believe that one year ago, many of us were watching water surge into our homes or our neighbor’s homes, or one of our many landmarks that took on water during those few days. One year, thirteen inches of rain and $2 billion in damages later, Mayor Dean and the rest of the city are able to look back on the ways that Nashvillians came together and cleaned up the mess. At yesterday’s flood commemoration event downtown, Mayor Dean said of the relief efforts, “This city can accomplish anything, and I mean anything, that we put our collective hands, hearts and minds to. Because when everything goes wrong, there is no doubt we can count on each other.” The Grand Ole Opry, one of the worst-hit landmarks during the flood, will be hosting a special show tonight to commemorate anniversary.
- Disaster. Four Tennessee counties–Bradley, Greene, Hamilton and Washington–were officially declared federal disaster areas by President Obama following last week’s tornadoes that left hundreds dead and thousands injured across the southeast.
- Sounds stadium still in the works. Metro is still searching for an outside firm to study the feasibility of building a new stadium for the Nashville Sounds, Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. They’ll take a look at the best probable location in addition to the size and configuration.
- Bits & pieces. Yesterday’s storms spawned some terrifying-looking wall clouds, funnel clouds and maybe some tornadoes … Gas prices, of which we are painfully well aware, are approaching an all-time high … Fort Campbell soldiers celebrated the death of Osama Bin Laden yesterday … Taylor Swift was just added to the CMA Festival lineup, meaning that this year might be the craziest yet … The Preds take on the Vancouver Canucks at Smashville tonight for Game 3 of the tied series.
