It’s Margarita O’Clock: Get Your Cinco De Mayo Fiesta On

It’s Cinco de Mayo, and you know what that means… It’s socially acceptable to drink margaritas at lunch! We’ve got a roundup of some local Cinco de Mayo fiestas, so pick your poison, don’t drink and drive, and have fun!

Cinco de Mayo Pub Crawl at Five Points (East Nashville’s 5 Points, 4-10pm). If margaritas aren’t your thing but you still want to party, East Nashville’s pub crawl is your place. 3 Crow Bar, Red Door Saloon, Beyond the Edge and Batter’d & Fried will be serving up drink specials and raffling off prizes, including a trip to Cancun (get a stamp at each bar as your entry form).

The Most Interesting Cinco de Mayo Party in Green Hills (2211 Bandywood Drive, 5-11pm). Arguably the ONLY Cinco de Mayo party in Green Hills, Greenhouse Bar will have a tent pitched out back to maximize the party space, and you can expect ”Fun Decorations, Outdoor Stage w/The CHRIS WEAVER-achi Band, Taco Truck, Fresh Guacamole, Sangria, Upside Down Margaritas, Lots of Dos Equis & The World’s Most Interesting Man.” Those are some tall promises. $5 to get in (or free if you’re a Mexican midget or wrestler, or both).

Taco Mamacita (1200 Villa Place, 4pm-12am): $5 El Caminos / El Vez, $3 Coronas/Corona Lights, $3 shots of Sauza Silver and Gold. The Chattanooga Brewing Company has brewed a special beer – Hot Mama – just for Taco Mamacita ($3 pints)!

SOL (403 Main Street, Franklin, 5-9pm): SOL Restaurant will attempt to break the Guinness Book Record for the Largest Tequila Toast. Tickets to participate in the Tequila Toast are $5 and the proceeds go to charity, so drink up! Music and other festivities start at 5pm, toast is at 7pm.

Sopapilla’s (1109 Davenport Blvd, Franklin, 4-11pm): Drink and food specials, live music, prizes and – drumroll – $10 hot air balloon rides. Can anyone top that, really?

La Hacienda (2615 Nolensville Road, 10am-9pm): Happy hour all day! 2-for-1 10 or 16oz margaritas, and a giant 45oz margarita for $8.49. Whoa.

Mas Tacos (732 McFerrin Ave, 11am-9pm): For the non-boozy crowd, take advantage of Mas Tacos being open until 9pm to get your Cinco de Mayo on (they usually close at 4). They’ll be serving elote, homemade guacamole, tortilla soup, tacos (of course), watermelon agua fresca and having specials all day.

The Local Taco (4501 Murphy Road, Nashville / 146 Pewitt Drive, Brentwood, 11am-10pm): Sylvan Park will serve up $3 Coronas and $5 margaritas, while Brentwood will feature a $3 Starr Hill Lucy and the same ol’ delicious $5 margaritas. Bonus: They’ll have the Preds game on!

Rosepepper (1907 Eastland Ave, 11am-2pm, 4-9:30pm): Rosepepper’s famous house margaritas are $5 all day. Need we say more?

Las Maracas (2704 Gallatin Pike / 1107 Gallatin Pike, 11am-10pm): Lime house margaritas, $3 for 12oz, $5 for 18oz and $15 for a pitcher. $3 32oz domestic drafts, $3.25 32oz Dos Equis draft, domestic bottles are 2-for-1 at $3 and import bottles are 2-for-1 at $3.50.

Cantina Laredo (592 12th Ave S, 11am-10pm): Happy hour from 11am-6pm, which means $5 margaritas! Cash bars on both patios to make it easier for you to get to your favorite Mexican beers, and they’ll have special promotions from Cuervo, Sauza and Patron from 6-10pm.

Margaritaville (322 Broadway, 11am-2am): $5 Loaded Landsharks or House Margaritas with your choice of Margaritaville tequila flavors – Island Lime, Last Mango, Calypso Coconut or Paradise Passion Fruit. $5 chips, salsa and queso combo.

Riff’s Fine Street Food: Creative Caribbean, Asian Flavors On Wheels

Yes, we’re writing about another new Nashville food truck. No, we’re not apologizing for that. Riff’s Fine Street Food is ready to hit the streets this Saturday, and since it’s been a week since we wrote about the debut of Little Filipino and a whopping one day since the debut of Moovers & Shakers, we’re ready for some new truck food to fill our bellies.

The menu at Riff’s will lean heavily toward Caribbean and Asian dishes, but it won’t stop there. Chefs B.J. Lofback and Carlos Davis are passionate about serving fresh, local, sustainable ingredients and forming partnerships with local farmers, and that makes their menu possibilities endless. They’ll be starting out with a few of their Caribbean specialty staples this weekend, but expect to be surprised every time you visit the truck. They sum up their mission better than we ever could:

How do you take something from the streets of Bangkok or Oaxaca and expect to do it any justice on the street in Nashville? No more than you can expect to replicate a Jimi Hendrix guitar riff note for note. But what you do is take what you’ve learned from those masters and create. Some things will be note for note, and liberties will be taken with others. This is what you can expect from our food. Like a really good cover band the song list will change, but there will be many standards.

Riff’s big debut is this Saturday, May 7 and they’re rolling out with two events. They’ll have a stand at the Richland Avenue Home & Garden Tour from 11am-5pm, while simultaneously unveiling the truck at the first Musician’s Corner from 3-6pm! Expect an all-Caribbean menu this weekend, featuring Jerk Chicken with their special homemade jerk seasoning, beans & rice and more. After this weekend, they’ll have a regular spot at the Woodbine Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and are currently seeking out spots for a Thursday-Saturday lunch route.

Hungry for some fine street food? Keep up with Riff’s whereabouts and what they’re serving on Twitter and Facebook. And while we’re talking about Twitter, you can keep up with all of the local food trucks by following our Nashville Food Trucks Twitter list.

Bright & Early: Snap Crackle Pop Edition

Good morning, Nashville. As areas along the Mississippi River continue to flood, President Obama declared a state of emergency for our neighbors in Dyer, Shelby, Lake and Stewart counties. The flooding, said to be caused by heavy snowmelts in Minnesota and North Dakota,  has led hundreds of folks in Memphis to evacuate to shelters and officials have closed many streets in the areas closest to the river. Meanwhile, the Army Corps of Engineers has been busy blowing holes in some of the levees to the north to hopefully lower the water levels. According to the National Weather Service, the flood is forecast to be “a lot nastier” than the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.

A Milkshake Truck Update: The Shaking Starts Today

When we wrote about Moovers & Shakers a few weeks ago, they were trying to raise $5,000 in just a few days to make their dream of bringing a mobile soda parlor to Nashville a reality. The good news is that they met their goal! The even better news is that Moovers & Shakers will make their grand debut today (Wednesday) at Belmont University. It’s Dead Day at Belmont, that glorious day before final exams with no classes so that everyone can study for finals (but we all know that’s not happening until at least midnight tonight). They don’t have their truck yet, so they’ll be sharing with their friends at Pizza Buds as they throw a big party and serve milkshakes on the lawn all day. Join Moovers & Shakers, Pizza Buds and The Grilled Cheeserie today between 12-5pm for some delicious, lactose-loaded truck food and entertainment from their favorite musician friends. We can’t promise that you won’t feel awkward and out of place on a college campus (for our readers who are post-college, of course), but after you take a peek at Moovers & Shaker’s menu for the day, we don’t think you’ll mind.

If you miss Moovers & Shakers today, you can catch them on May 21 at fEASTival Nashville (and maybe they’ll have our Nashvillest shake by then… if we can ever decide what to put in it!). We’re not sure we can wait that long, so we’ll be braving Dead Day (it’s not as scary as it sounds) to get shakin’.

Moovin’ and Shakin’ Into Summer. Wednesday, May 4 from 12-5pm, Belmont University South Lawn (just follow the sound of the music).

Bright & Early: Get To Work Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Davidson County Criminal Court Clerk David Torrence could be penalized up to losing his job after WSMV planted a camera outside his house and found that he only works three days per week and pulls in a six-figure, taxpayer-funded salary. They also found that he uses his county car for liquor store runs and hired his sons into two jobs in the office without posting the positions first. Though he was pretty unapologetic in WSMV’s initial interview, he has since publicly apologized and promised to go to work at some point. Davidson County taxpayers have since been blowing up Mayor Dean’s phone, and even Mayor Dean has stated the Torrence needs to work a normal schedule. Several Metro Councilmembers have called for his resignation or removal from office and District Attorney Torry Johnson is looking into ways to make that happen. Trouble is, he was just elected to a fifth four-year term.

Bright & Early: It’s Been A Year Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Yesterday and today mark the one year anniversary of the historic Nashville flood. It’s hard to believe that one year ago, many of us were watching water surge into our homes or our neighbor’s homes, or one of our many landmarks that took on water during those few days. One year, thirteen inches of rain and $2 billion in damages later, Mayor Dean and the rest of the city are able to look back on the ways that Nashvillians came together and cleaned up the mess. At yesterday’s flood commemoration event downtown, Mayor Dean said of the relief efforts, “This city can accomplish anything, and I mean anything, that we put our collective hands, hearts and minds to.  Because when everything goes wrong, there is no doubt we can count on each other.” The Grand Ole Opry, one of the worst-hit landmarks during the flood, will be hosting a special show tonight to commemorate anniversary.
