Bright & Early: Crash And Burn Edition
Good morning, Nashville. It’s a slow news day, but there seems to be a lot of people crashing through places that are not supposed to be crashed through. Like this lady, who drove her car straight into Omni Sound Studios on Division Street in the wee hours this morning (cue the “smash hit” jokes). And this guy out in Cookeville, who for reasons unknown crawled into the ceiling at United Pentecostal Church and then came crashing down. People of Nashville and the surrounding areas, please stop crashing through things.
- Long live the Brass Stables. Starting today, certain property owners in downtown Nashville will be given the option to protect 300 historic buildings, including locations in Printer’s Alley, the Fifth Avenue national historic district and the American Trust Building. If owners vote yes to the historic overlay, they are agreeing that their properties cannot be demolished.
- Carded. Tennessee voters may soon have to provide photo ID to cast a ballot, due to a proposal that passed state Senate last night. The bill is waiting to be taken up by the State and Local Government Committee in the House, but is expected to pass this year (after failing the last few years).
- Bits & pieces. We’ll be getting a Fiat dealership by spring … Check out the new Metro Parks website, which looks somewhat suspiciously like the old Metro Parks website … The Bonnaroo lineup is coming today at 11am (don’t worry, we’ll have you covered) … Former Titan Albert Haynesworth has been accused of sexually assaulting a Washington, DC waitress … Southwest is cutting Nashville flights to Chicago Midway, Baltimore, Orlando, New Orleans, Phoenix, San Diego and Providence.

Happy Hour: In Retrospect
- MTSU spent a few hours on lockdown today after an argument that led to one person being shot in the hand. Fortunately no one was hurt, the shooter was eventually apprehended and students were allowed to go about their day. [WTVF]
- Nothing says “I love you” quite like a heart-shaped box of crickets. [WSMV]
- Country star Craig Morgan totally rescued some neighbor-kids from a burning house in Dickson and then helped firefighters hose down the flames. [WKRN]
- Vanderbilt has made a fancy new internet thing that helps you tell if you have the flu or just some other bug. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: All You Need Is _____ Edition
Good morning, Nashville, and happy Valentine’s Day if you’re into that sort of thing! One thing we can all be into is the beautiful spring weather we get to enjoy this week. Temperatures will hit the upper-50s this week and possibly climb to 70 by Thursday. Hard to believe we were all sitting in the blizzard traffic jam from hell less than a week ago, right? Since it’s still only February, we’re probably not quite out of the wintry woods yet but we’ll certainly take it. And if all this warm weather and sunshine puts you in the mood to get married today, remember that the Belmont Mansion has you covered.
- Mayor Dean has an opponent. Metro Councilman Michael Craddock will be taking on Mayor Dean in the August mayoral election. But as WSMV points out, an incumbent mayor has never lost a re-election in Nashville, ever.
- Things get interesting. Speaking of Mayor Dean, he threw in his endorsement for the proposed nondiscrimination ordinance while the Nashville Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to Metro Council members expressing their concern that “the legislation does not reflect a process in which diligent and responsible research has been conducted.”
- Bits & pieces. Surprise! The TVA is raising our rates again … Congrats to Lady Antebellum and all the other folks who represented Nashville well at the Grammys last night … A 26-year old Centennial High School grad had a front row seat to the Egyptian revolution … A group of Tennessee lawmakers are continuing to work on passing an Arizona-like immigration reform here in Tennessee.

Bright & Early: Puddles Edition
Good morning, Nashville. A bit of welcome warm weather is heading our way. We’ll see 40 degrees tomorrow, 50′s Sunday and Monday, and temperatures in the 60′s starting Tuesday! We want to give a shout-out to the snow for its usefulness in crime-busting, though. Clarksville police nabbed a burglar after tracing his footprints in the snow back to the scene of the crime, and one happy Clarksville man got his GPS back. Anyway, 60 degrees anyone?
- Vroom. Mitsubishi is expected to announce on Monday plans to bring a $200 million manufacturing site to Memphis. Jobs! Money! Cars!
- It might get better. A parent is suing Metro Nashville Public Schools for failing to provide a safe place from bullying after an incident with a bully landed one of her daughters in the hospital. Metro schools have been working on solving the bullying problem since last fall, proposing changes to the bullying and harassment policy that include cyberbullying, an option to report bullies anonymously, putting teachers and staff through special training and sponsoring a bullying awareness campaign.
- Bits & pieces. Four people escaped from a Green Hills home as it went completely up in flames last night … Our very own Ryman Auditorium was named Pollstar’s Theatre of the Year for the third time … Yesterday was a good day for Vandy basketball … While we were cooking potato soup, this guy was cooking meth in his bathroom in Madison … Could we really, maybe, actually, for real get wine in our grocery stores sometime, ever?

Happy Hour: Skate On By
- The roads definitely cleared up a bit today, but they’re expected to re-freeze overnight. So be careful! [WKRN]
- Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford and Sumner County schools are all closed tomorrow along with most others in the midstate. [WSMV]
- People are predictably upset about how TDOT handled the situation, though TDOT maintains that they did their best. [WKRN]
- One thing that didn’t really happen yesterday was a widespread power outage. So hooray for that! [City Paper]
- The Preds have acquired forward Mike Fisher… a.k.a. Carrie Underwood’s husband. [WKRN]
- It looks like the bill allowing wine to be sold in grocery stores could have a decent shot at passing this time around. [WSMV]
- The Goodyear Tire plant in West Tennessee will be idling at the end of the year, putting about 1,900 people out of a job. [WZTV]

Bright & Early: In The Snow, Uphill Both Ways Edition
Good morning, Nashville. So how about that snow last night? And that commute? We don’t even want to talk about that commute, really. Though only about 1-3 inches of snow coated the city, the roads turned into a sheet of ice within minutes and reportedly left many folks sitting in rush hour traffic for 4-5 hours. Cars were left abandoned on the side of the road (and in the middle of the road?), dozens of accidents were reported and police were forced to only respond to injury wrecks, of which there were plenty. Because salt only melts snow down to about 26 degrees and it is 9 degrees as we write this, we don’t expect to see things clear up much this morning and police are urging commuters to stay home. Also, if you strike out to find the car you ditched yesterday and isn’t where you left it, it’s probably in Metro’s impound lot. Contact them at (615) 862-7800. You’ll also want to plan on shelling out a $10 fine plus towing costs.
- Flood babies! There was a running joke during the May flood that Nashville might experience a sizable baby boom nine months later. Well, we weren’t kidding! Area hospitals are having to beef up their delivery room staff to handle the demand.
- Back in business. Sixty Spring Hill GM employees were able to return to their jobs this week for the first time since the plant was idled in November 2009. They’re getting the plant ready for a new four-cylinder engine line that could create 400 jobs for laid-off workers.
- Bits & pieces. Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt is being accused of “theft by deception” in New Jersey for promising to pay bail bonds for some friends and then never paying … State Sen. Mae Beavers filed a bill on behalf of the Tea Party requiring presidential candidates to produce their birth certificate before they’re allowed on the Tennessee ballot … Metro Schools accidentally robo-called all parents in Arabic yesterday … When it’s all said and done, those Garth Brooks will have raised $5 million for flood relief.

Bright & Early: Someone Stole Our Sunshine Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Is it possible to veto a snow storm? Because we’ll sign whatever we need to sign to make that happen. This morning’s forecast actually isn’t looking that bad with only 1-2 inches of snow predicted, though that’s enough frozen stuff to cause Metro and other neighboring school systems to shut things down early today. Look for the snow to roll into town around noon and taper off in the early morning hours. It’s cold enough that the evening commute may be a little slick, so be careful out there! As usual. But here’s some good news: Warmer weather and sunshine are definitely on the way.
- Big incentives. Mayor Dean wants to offer up a $2.4 million grant to lure the Asurion Corporation, a cell phone repair company, to Davidson County. The move would bring 600 new jobs to Nashville.
- Way to go, Murfreesboro. For some reason, Amazon.com ranked Murfreesboro as the 8th most romantic city in the country. The listing is actually based on romantic novel and movie sales since the first of the year and Knoxville was second only to Alexandria, Virginia. Guess we know what you East Tennesseans are reading tonight…
- Bits & pieces. The head of the Metro Parks Police was decommissioned after a domestic incident with his wife … Williamson County got a new shipment of salt just in time, it seems … Some folks are up in arms about former Bredesen staffers filling up unadvertised positions with the city government … The Music City Center construction is right on schedule … Those foreclosed Fifth and Main condos in East Nashville will be auctioned off at the end of the month.

Bright & Early: Back To The Grind Edition
Good morning, Nashville. The newly-elected 107th General Assembly was called to order yesterday and had their first session bright and early this morning. If the budget hearings of the past few weeks have been any indication, it’s going to be a long year fraught with budget cuts across pretty much every state department. The new lawmakers also expect to deal with some controversial education, immigration and voter’s rights issues this year. And speaking of controversy, Rep. Glen Casada filed a bill yesterday to block localities from passing nondiscrimination employment policies that cover anything other than what’s in the Civil Rights Act, meaning that these policies couldn’t prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
- Energy assistance demand on the rise. Since our energy bills have been so dang high in the past few months, more and more people are applying for assistance, which has been a little overwhelming for the agencies that can help them.
- Something in the water. The issue of fluoride in tap water has at least one group of lawmakers riled up this year. Though fluoride is put into the water to help prevent tooth decay, many opponents argue that it poses a number of health risks and hope to eliminate it.
- Bits & pieces. More snow on Wednesday! … If you’re looking for volunteer opportunities, Second Harvest and Red Cross could both really use some help right now … Some new plans for a scaled-back May Town Center will likely be introduced soon … Sen. Mike Faulk is proposing that women be allowed to breastfeed in public regardless of the age of the child.

Happy Hour: Fish In A Barrel
- It’s snowing! Or snizzling. Or snouring. Or snaining. Either way, it is downright nasty outside, so be careful! [WTVF]
- As such, there have been some school closings and cancellations of evening activities, so keep an eye out if that applies to you. [WSMV]
- The Titans have officially named offensive line coach Mike Munchak as the new head coach. And no, he does not have a mustache, so this might take some getting-used-to. [WKRN]
- If ever you get the urge to dig through old Metro Council or school board meeting archives, you will soon be able to do so on Youtube. [City Paper]
- Police are investigating a pipe bomb that was found in a porta-potty at Cedar Hill Park in Madison yesterday. Though they were thankfully able to “safely detonate” the bomb, they are still trying to figure out who put it there. [WTVF]
