Bright & Early: Clash Of The Titans Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Ol’ Bud Adams finally made up his mind yesterday: Vince Young is officially getting the boot. The Titans had a pretty disastrous 2010 season, and most of the chatter in the past few weeks has suggested that either Vince or Coach Fisher would be leaving the franchise, as the two can’t seem to coexist. In a statement released yesterday, Adams thanked Vince for his service and said that they are working to find a new quarterback to lead the team next season. Vince, too, kept it classy and thanked the city of Nashville, teammates, fans, Bud Adams, and anyone else he could cram into 140 characters on his Twitter account. So Vince, Nashvillest bids you a hearty farewell.

Happy Hour: The Sky Is A Void

  • Governator-to-be Bill Haslam said his goodbyes to the fine people of Knoxville today, saying that it’s the best job he ever had. We hope he likes this next gig too, as it is sort of an important one! He’s due to be sworn in on January 15th. [KnoxNews]
  • Speaking of folks getting sworn in, our new delegation to the United States Congress became official today. [WPLN]
  • A flock of several hundred birds dropped dead in Western Kentucky today. As the other two dead bird incidents also happened the nearby states of Arkansas and Louisiana, we can only assume that we are probably next if we aren’t first swallowed up by some gargantuan Tennessee-shaped sinkhole. [Tennessean]
  • The State of Tennessee got a $7.5 million insurance payment for flood damage, which is part of the $15 million total reimbursement expected. [WSMV]
  • The Tennessee school report cards are supposed to finally come out on Friday, so we should have some idea of where our schools stand with the standardized testing and No Child Left Behind. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Racing In Circles Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Fairgrounds supporters are up in arms after discovering a request for proposals issued by the city for companies interested in taking on a new park project at the Fairgrounds. The problem is, the RFP refers to the “former fairgrounds” and “former racetrack,” so some folks believe this is the mayor’s way of trying to destroy the racetrack without getting Metro Council approval. The Mayor’s Office maintains that this isn’t their intent.

Happy Hour: Singing A Different Tune

  • The Metro Police have an interesting new tactic for patrolling our streets: Soliciting the help of UPS and FedEx drivers to keep the streets safe. While we got excited when we read this headline and thought that maybe our delivery drivers might be for real patrolling, this actually just means that they’re being encouraged to report anything suspicious. Carry on! [WTVF]
  • A car rolled over on I-40 in Bellevue today, injuring the people inside. The crash is being blamed on a cat inside the vehicle that escaped from its carrier and caused the driver to swerve. There were actually three cats and three people in the car. All three kitties were a-okay, but unfortunately all three humans were transported to Vanderbilt–one in very critical condition. [WKRN]
  • Three guys were arrested in North Nashville last night after robbing a McDonald’s. Turns out, they’re likely connected to at least 17 fast food robberies since August. [WKRN]
  • So it turns out that Table 3 restaurant in Green Hills did in fact suffer “extensive water and smoke damage” in this morning’s blaze. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Need More Trees Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Remember that new law granting free downtown parking to hybrid owners who shell out a mere $10 for a parking sticker? Metro Councilman Charlie Tygard, who has criticized the program for being too elitist, is hoping to extend the opportunity to all Davidson County car owners–if we are willing to pay for the carbon offset for the particular vehicles we drive. The money would go into a carbon offset fund that would pay for carbon-eating trees and wetlands mitigation and other fancy things to help the city get a little less gross.

Happy Hour: Oh Look, There’s Abe

  • Things are getting a little nasty in the Titans camp these days. Coach Fisher and Vince Young are both facing some uncertainty about next season, and it sounds like one will mostly stay while the other goes. All the other Titans players are just trying to stay out of it. [City Paper]
  • Representatives of Starwood are holding a public meeting tonight to get some input on their plans for possibly reviving the old amphitheater, or at least doing something with the land. [WSMV]
  • The Metro Council is considering an ordinance that would prevent street preachers from running around with bullhorns, which is apparently a problem downtown these days, and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau thinks they may be scaring away the tourists. [WSMV]
  • People are trying to figure out why Antioch does not seem to have any problem with their new mosque while Murfreesboro’s conflict keeps throwing us into the national news. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: Twenty-Eleven Edition

Good morning, Nashville, and happy first Monday of 2011! We hope you guys had a fun, relaxing and safe holiday and that you’re a little less cranky about Monday than we are (that is, if you’re even awake)! Starting January 1, a couple of new laws went into effect in Tennessee including a new measure that requires more DUI offenders to use those fancy breathalyzer devices that don’t allow them to start their cars unless they pass the test. Another law requires prisons to check the documentation of all inmates to verify that they’re in the country legally. Those who aren’t are reported to the federal authorities.
