Bright & Early: Blast It All Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re feeling a bit under the weather this morning and also are having a hard time stringing together a sentence, so watch this video instead! Happy Wednesday/snowday.

Happy Hour: We Think His Tractor’s Sexy

  • We feel that Mayor Dean is simply not hardcore if he’s not out clearing snow with his John Deere tractor like the mayor of Minor Hill. [WSMV]
  • Metro Schools will be closed for the third day this week on Wednesday, which is unfortunate as they used up their last allotted snow day today. [WTVF & WSMV]
  • Members of the 107th General Assembly convened for the first time today, and Rep. Beth Harwell made history as the first woman elected Speaker of the House in Tennessee. [WTVF]
  • The Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian advocacy group, says that Vanderbilt University is violating abortion laws by requiring nurse residency applicants to participate in abortion procedures. Vanderbilt says there’s no truth to the accusation. [Tennessean]
  • Check out some of the news coverage from last night’s snowball fight on WKRN and News Channel 5. WSMV’s coverage is conspicuously absent, though we suspect it may have something to do with the part where we ambushed their news van, for the sake of tradition. Don’t hate us, WSMV!

Bright & Early: Charrrrge Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Well done with the citywide snowball fight last night! We’d guess around 100 of you turned out and pelted each other to your hearts’ content. Battlecries were shouted, alliances were formed, news crews were ambushed, and some strangers even united to build an impressive 7-foot snowman. The snow is supposed to taper off today, but then temperatures will plunge into stupid-cold territory with lows in the teens tonight. We won’t see anything above the mid-20s until Friday. As such, black ice will continue to be an issue, so please drive carefully!

Citywide Snowball Fight: Tonight At 6PM, Centennial Park [#ArcticBlast2011]

As we’re sure you know by now, it snowed last night in Nashville. And snow can only mean one thing, other than the bread & milk shelves emptying out: It’s time for a citywide snowball fight! (Okay, so snow can mean a lot of things, especially in Nashville, but we’re prioritizing.)

We attended an impromptu snowball fight last year in Centennial Park, and magical things happened. A mythical beer truck may or may not have provided belly-warming nourishment. We ambushed news crews with snowballs. We slid on cookie sheets pulled by bicycles. We pub-crawled afterward. We made a bunch of new friends. At a citywide snowball fight, all your wildest dreams can come true.

So! Join us tonight at 6pm-ish in Centennial Park for the first citywide snowball fight of 2011, if you can get out of your driveways. If you’re for real snowed in, start throwing snowballs at your neighbors and see if you can’t get some fun started of your very own!

Citywide Snowball Fight. Monday, January 10, 2011. Centennial Park (West End side of the Parthenon). Bring sleds, cookie sheets, and bundle up!

“The Leg Has Got To Go” [Gems From The Nashville Craigslist]

…And you thought fruitcake was bad. Bringing a whole new meaning to re-gifting, our first Gem from the Nashville Craigslist of 2011:

Female Mannequin Leg (East Nashville)

Ok, y’all. My friend went to a Christmas party and received this mannequin leg as a gag gift. It was pretty funny for a while, but my roommate (his lady) and I told him from the start that it was not welcome in the house. Of course that meant he brought it in the house. It has terrorized various rooms, but tonight was the last straw. He apparently decided it would be fun to hide it in a corner on the front porch. I went to walk my dog, saw it out of the corner of my eye, and nearly had a heart attack, thinking there was a person on my porch in the ghetto.

THE LEG HAS GOT TO GO. Seriously. I don’t know what you’d do with it. We’ve had some ideas…turn it into a lamp of sorts, use it as a coat tree, make an art project…the possibilities are endless, really. The leg is nicely shaped, as you can see from the pictures below. It is well toned and has a small, but firm, derriere.

Please come get this leg. Before I beat my friend with it. It is free to a good home. It just wants to be loved.

Bright & Early: Snow On The Brain Edition

Good morning, Nashville. You might have noticed that’s snowing outside! Most of Nashville received anywhere from 2-4″ last night, resulting in school closures, canceled flights, hazardous driving conditions and an official state of emergency. According to weather forecasts, we’ve probably got another inch or two on the way tonight into tomorrow. We can has snow day?

Happy Hour: Some Children Left Behind

  • Welp, the report cards are out and Metro failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress under No Child Left Behind. But! But. They were granted a special natural disaster waiver because of the flood and won’t face any major consequences. [City Paper]
  • Williamson County Schools, however, did swimmingly as usual. [Tennessean]
  • The other tidbit to come out of this report card is that more than half of all the state’s teachers who had their teaching licenses revoked this year were involved in inappropriate relationships and text message sex talk with students (can we call this sexting?) Gross! [WKRN]
  • Nashville saw a 9% increase in fatal traffic accidents in 2010. Drive safe out there, friends! [WSMV]
  • Coach Fisher stays! [City Paper]
  • John Rich is strangely not playing at the pre-inauguration concert for Governor-elect Bill Haslam. But Bo Bice sure is. [Post Politics]
  • Red Cross reeeaaalllly needs help providing the basics for the dozens of folks who have lost homes in fires over the past few months. [WKRN]
  • Congrats to hometown hero Taylor Swift for being the top-selling, top-played artist of 2010. Remember that time she donated $500,000 to our flood relief fund? Haters to the left, you go girl, etc. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: Dust It Off Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re running short on time this morning, so here’s your abbreviated Bright & Early:

  • Our weather alerts are flashing this morning about a possible dusting of snow today. Exciting, right? There’s also a possibly larger system on the way for Sunday night and Monday. [Nashville WX]
  • Experts say that all the recent hike in gas prices is just the beginning. [WSMV]
  • Two pitbull puppies fell into a 20-foot sinkhole in Putnam County yesterday and were thankfully rescued by local emergency crews, who said it was worth the risk because the puppies were very cute and grateful. The rescuers also noted that it was good practice for when more sinkholes open up and swallow humans. [WTVF]
  • A woman from Middle Tennessee is shipping guitars to troops in Afghanistan in hopes that a little music can go a long way in making deployments more bearable. [WTVF]
  • Nashville’s magnet school lottery happens tomorrow, and about 13,000 families will be waiting to hear. [WSMV]
  • A Southwest Airlines passenger was arrested at BNA after a “small arsenal” was discovered in his checked bag. [City Paper]
  • DUI arrests were way down on NYE, but not because fewer people were driving drunk. The funding that usually covers extra Metro police officers during that time was cut, meaning they didn’t have the resources to patrol as much as they normally do. [City Paper]
  • The Preds extended their winning streak to four against the Kings last night! [WTVF]
