Bright & Early: Endless Winter Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Our weather alerts have already started flashing orange and red in anticipation of the wintry weather we might get at the end of this week. Though this storm system looks like it will bring us less snow than last time, we’re could be looking at some travel problems on Thursday night and Friday morning. Which probably means the kids will be out of school again! They’re never going to learn anything, at this rate. We did learn a very interesting new term this morning: Arctic oscillation. We don’t really understand what it means, but apparently it’s the name for the thing we should blame for all this snowy weather.
- Fire crews called to Opryland. The Opryland Hotel nearly gave us a heart attack last night when fire crews responded to some smoke in the boiler room. Turns out it was just an oil line that blew, there was no fire and no one was hurt. Gotta love that Opryland, always keeping us on our toes!
- Going paperless. At some point soon, folks receiving unemployment benefits will be able to get the electronically by way of direct deposit or a debit card. The new system should save our state about $3.2 million in postage costs annually.
- Bits & pieces. In addition to that widespread flu outbreak, we’ve also got a widespread stomach virus outbreak. You’ll find us holed up in our house wearing surgical masks for the next few weeks … The Nashville Zoo set an all-time attendance record of 640,000 total visitors during 2010 … Former Belmont coach Lisa Howe will be making an appearance at tonight’s Metro Council meeting while they debate a new non-discrimination ordinance … Food prices are on track to reach their highest point since the recession.

Happy Hour: Gestational What?
- By the looks of the headlines, the only thing that happened today is that everyone found out that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban had another kid… last month! Through a gestational surrogate. In Nashville. [WKRN]
- We look forward to some actual news tomorrow when everyone has not taken the day off.

Bright & Early: Fight For Your Right Edition
Good morning, Nashville. It’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and whether you’re at work or not, it’s a day worth observing, reflecting and celebrating. As such, several commemorative events will be getting underway this morning focused around North Nashville and the Tennessee State University campus. A parade kicks off the festivities at 11am down Jefferson Street, followed by a convocation at TSU’s Gentry Center around noon. Meanwhile Governor Haslam is in Memphis today lending a hand to their civil rights celebrations.
- Speaking of Governor Haslam, his inauguration went off without a hitch on Saturday and the Haslams welcomed about 1,000 people into the governor’s mansion–which is inhabited for the first time in eight years–for an open house on Sunday. He also signed an executive order eliminating a rule that requires the governor and his top aides to disclose their income.
- If you and everyone you know has been getting sick this season, it’s not a coincidence. Health officials say that Tennessee is experiencing a widespread flu outbreak, along with 11 other states.
- Bits & pieces. Sen. Stacey Campfield has refiled his controversial “Don’t Say Gay” bill … Shelbyville is in bad enough shape financially that they could lose their curbside trash service … Meteorologists are keeping an eye on another potential snow system rolling through Middle Tennessee at the end of the week … That new method of scoring standardized tests will probably lower graduation rates in Tennessee.

Video: Goodbye, Governor Phil [Comings & Goings]
As you’re probably aware, today’s inauguration of Tennessee’s new governor Bill Haslam is taking center stage in Nashville, and rightfully so. But we couldn’t let Governor Bredesen go without one last goodbye, so we scraped together our best video editing skills (we think you’ll be impressed. Really.) and created a tribute to good ol’ Phil. We’ll miss you, Governor Phil (and your green vest too).

Bright & Early: It’s The Sun Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We’re rushing this morning, so here’s your abbreviated Bright & Early:
- Things are moving along pretty quickly at the Music City Center construction site, and the center is still scheduled to be finished in 2013. [WKRN]
- Due to the state of the economy, Governor-elect Haslam’s inauguration festivities are going to be pretty “low-key” to emphasize his frugality. Everything will also be privately funded. [City Paper]
- Something about re-drawing Metro Council districts? Too much for our congested heads to process this morning. [City Paper]
- According to Bud Adams, the Titans won’t be raising ticket prices in 2011. Thank goodness. [Tennessean]
- Just as Nashville finishes replacing the entire downtown water main system, it gets cold enough to cause every other water main to break. One busted on Elm Hill Pike this morning and snarled traffic on I-40. [Tennessean]

Happy Hour: Red Skies At Night
- LP Field will be hosting the US men’s soccer team vs. Paraguay on March 23rd. Tickets go on sale 1/21 and the match will be televised on ESPN. It’s no World Cup, but we’ll take it! [Tennessean]
- Metro Schools are closed again tomorrow! So enjoy your 10-day weekend, kids, for you will probably never see one of those again until the summertime. [WTVF]
- The Music City Star commuter train set a new single-day ridership record yesterday with 1,107 total passenger trips. [City Paper]
- We can all breathe a sigh of relief as the city is almost finished replacing the century-old water main system beneath downtown Nashville. The project should be finished by the end of next month, provided it ever stops snowing. [WKRN]
- Congratulations, Nashville! You’re the 18th most literate city in the country. [WSMV]
- It’s that time of year when state lawmakers try to pass a law expressly banning a state income tax. [WSMV]
- District 18 Councilwoman and Belmont professor Kristine LaLonde has announced that she won’t be seeking reelection, in addition to District 5 Councilman Jamie Hollin. [WPLN]

Bright & Early: Yep, It’s Still Snowing Edition
Good morning, Nashville. It’s still snowing outside, somehow! Schools are out again today, the kiddos have nearly forgotten what the inside of a classroom looks like, and we feel quite sure they’ll be cursing these snow days well into June when they’re still not out for the summer. The good news is, these snow showers should wrap up soon this morning and give way to sun this afternoon, and then it might actually get out of the 20s tomorrow. Here’s hoping.
- Flood warnings inadequate. In a report that comes as a surprise to no one, the National Weather Service admitted their flood warnings were inadequate and will be revamping their entire system in an effort to avoid that sort of communication deficiency in the future.
- Fighting against non-discrimination. Several dozen conservative business leaders and lawmakers met yesterday morning to strategize against a proposed Metro Council bill that would require all of Metro’s contractors to adopt anti-discrimination policies. The Family Action Council of Tennessee reportedly organized the meeting, and Rep. Glen Casada and Rep. Jim Gotto (also a Metro Councilman) were in attendance.
- Bits & pieces. The Preds are going into tonight’s game with a six-game winning streak … The City of Franklin took the plunge and purchased another $45,000 worth of salt for the roads … Tennessee’s bankruptcy filings were down 6% last year … A woman in Williamson County had to wait 35 minutes for the police to arrive while a man tried to break into her home. When he finally got in, she beat him back out the door with a vacuum cleaner.
