Bright & Early: Race To The Top Edition

Good morning, Nashville. The votes are in and now here’s the news you have all been waiting for: Basil Marceaux managed to run away with 3,505 votes, which is less than 1% of the total. The members of illustrious staff were kind enough to let him record a “consolation speech” and are already pimping him out for the 2014 governor race because they are just that dedicated to getting his message out and certainly not because they enjoy internet fame.  In other important election news, Bill Haslam snagged the GOP nomination, Mike McWherter started making some campaign promises, and the Yarbro-Henry race was so close that they’re doing a recount.

Happy Hour: Across The Sky

  • So about those storms! Lots of power outages all over Davidson County. A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 8pm. [WKRN]
  • On this fine Election Day–otherwise known as the Most Convenient Day Of The Year For Every Tennessee State Government Website To Go Down–every Tennessee state government website went down. Though it reportedly had nothing to do with the power outages, they were all down for several hours. [Tennessean]
  • Some local dog owners (206 at last count, according to the petition) are very upset because the Centennial Park renovations involve shrinking the dog parks and moving them closer together, meaning that smaller dogs could see and be intimidated by large dogs. [WSMV]
  • Metro Police somehow accidentally misplaced 1,600 traffic stop videos, but claim that it was an outside contractor who deleted them. [Tennessean]
  • Congrats to Rocketown for their new digs, which opened today! [WKRN]

Bright & (Not So) Early: 14:59 Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re running behind this morning, as we are still sort of scraping ourselves off the floor from last night’s Basil Manceaux debate. So here is your abbreviated Bright & Early:

  • The Metro Health Department is offering free vaccinations for all Davidson County kids who are going back to school next week. [WTVF]
  • The Islamic Center in Antioch is thisclose to happening. [WKRN]
  • Meanwhile, the Rutherford County planning commission is busy trying to answer questions from residents about their mosque situation. [Tennessean]
  • It is very hot outside! Did you know that? And it’s also supposed to storm later. Welcome to Middle Tennessee (but seriously, be careful.) [WTVF]
  • It is also election day for the Tennessee gubernatorial primaries, and also it’s hot. [WTVF]
  • It’s so hot that the Titans have moved their practices to the nighttime. [WTVF]

Happy Hour: When The Circus Came To Town (And Never, Ever Left)

  • Don’t forget! There’s a big debate going down between Basil Marceaux and some other candidates we haven’t heard of tonight at Scarritt Bennett at 6:30pm. Sadly, our other favorite candidate James Reesor declined to participate. [Post Politics]
  • More importantly, tomorrow is election day and you should not forget to vote. Even if it’s just for Basil. [Davidson County Election Commission]
  • A French consul will be swinging through Nashville next month, but no one knows yet who the French consul will actually be. [WSMV]
  • Headline of the day, courtesy of the Tennessean: Congress race in East TN heats up with sex hotline number on campaign mailer. [Tennessean]
  • Hooray for the Belle Meade City Hall, which reopened today for the first time since the flood! [WSMV]
  • The Predators are teaming up with the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce to offer some pretty sweet incentives for purchasing Preds business packages. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Practice Makes Perfect Edition

Good morning, Nashville. It’s feeling a little toasty outside, isn’t it? Well, more like someone cranked the oven to “broil.” Yes, it’s summer, and yes, it always gets hot, but temperatures are supposed to reach a record high today with the heat index spiking to 110, which is definitely hot enough to be dangerous. Metro schools have already canceled all of their outdoor sports practices for the afternoon and officials are advising everyone else to stay in the A/C too, if possible. As we mentioned yesterday, NES says that they’re perfectly capable of handling the increased energy demand, but they are asking us to watch our usage between the peak hours between 4pm-6pm to be on the safe side.

Happy Hour: Keep The Music Playing

  • Congressman Jim Cooper toured the Schermerhorn today and it’s still looking pretty pitiful. Get well soon, Nashville Symphony! [WKRN]
  • Bloody mattress and bed bug horror stories aside, the Metro Health Department found that the Stadium Inn is in tip-top shape. For the Stadium Inn. [WTVF]
  • Kids are starting school next week (already!?) and it looks as though they will actually have books. [WSMV]
  • Thanks to the flood, Gaylord Entertainment’s revenue dropped 15% last quarter. But! They’ve already booked enough rooms for 2011 that they should be up 130% from the same period last year. [WPLN]
  • Nashvillians Ke$ha, Hayley Williams and Taylor Swift rocked the VMA nominations today. Way to go, ladies! [Tennessean]
  • Finally, Fox gives us that other country music awards show we’ve all been waiting for, because the CMAs, ACMs and CMTs were just not cutting it. [Tennessean]
  • And for your daily Basil news fix, the Scene managed to dig up his criminal record which included some insanity pleas. Also, he’s going to be debating some other candidates live at Scarritt-Bennett tomorrow night. [Pith In The Wind & Post Politics]
  • China is changing its entire adoption policy because of the Shelbyville woman who shipped her adopted kid back to Russia. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: Public Is The New Private Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Rumors started flying on Twitter last night about Metro posting the personal information of dozens of flood victims, including full bank account numbers, on the public website for Davidson County property records. Once Metro officials were alerted to the problem, they immediately took the information offline. It turns out that 68 flood victims who applied for tax reductions had their supporting documents posted online in full.

Last Chance To Get Your Roller Derby Fix This Weekend (This Year, At Least)

The final days of the Nashville Rollergirls’ season are nigh, but don’t think they’ll go out quietly. Show up Saturday to for the Rollergirls’ last hometown bouts of the season, a double header against the Ft. Wayne Derby Girls. That’s two bouts for the price of one, and it’s the last time you’ll see them skate in Nashville until April 2011! If you weren’t one of the 2,384 people present last month to watch the Nashville Rollergirls slaughter Tallahassee in their new Municipal Auditorium home, you missed out. Big time. But we know you won’t make the same mistake twice, right?

Saturday’s first bout will start at 5pm (doors at 4), and the second bout will start at 7:30 at Municipal Auditorium. Tickets are just $10 if you get them in advance from your favorite derby girl or one of the locations listed on their site, and tickets at the door are $15 (so are Ticketmaster tickets). At either price, it’s a steal for four and a half hours of the best entertainment in town.

Happy Hour: See Spot Run

  • There’s apparently a new Nashville reality show in the works called “NashVegas” which promises to be some sort of mixture between Entourage and American Idol. And though this sounds like a bit of a disaster, we’ll probably be tuning in should it ever see the light of day. [WSMV]
  • Speaking of television disasters, everyone’s favorite Tennessee gubernatorial candidate Basil Marceaux will be making an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight. Regarding the appearance, Basil says, “I’m more concerned about my message. So if they make fun of me and all that stuff, it’ll be worth it.” Seriously, can we stop making fun of this man already and just give him a hug? [Post Politics]
  • The fine folks in Salemtown are finally (probably) getting rid of the Metro Action Commission headquarters, which is a social services agency that provides a wide variety of assistance to low-income Nashvillians. The agency is seeking to relocate and while the S-Towners are very clear that they support the commission’s work, they say that the clients it attracts are too much for the neighborhood to handle. [Tennessean]
  • Remember! The deadline for filing for flood assistance with FEMA and the SBA is this Thursday, August 5th. [WKRN]
  • Kevin Mawae is a little bummed out that the Titans haven’t asked him back this season. As a free agent, he says that Coach Fisher promised him a spot on the team; however, General Manager Mike Reinfeldt is doubtful that it’s going to happen. [Tennessean]

Tacos x2: The Local Taco Settles Down In Brentwood

In just a little over a year, The Local Taco has become a Sylvan Park culinary staple, with a line out the door most nights and a packed-out patio year round. Now, owners John Ko, Jay Pennington and Michael Sloan hope to replicate their first location’s success with The Local Taco, Brentwood edition, opening today on Pewitt Drive. If the trial run we got this weekend was any indication, they’re certainly on the right track – Local Taco fans and naysayers alike will want to give the new location a whirl.

Keeping in the spirit of the Sylvan Park store’s fast, casual vibe, The Local Taco Brentwood will feature the familiar order-at-the-counter routine for lunch before morphing into a full table service restaurant for dinner. Expect an amped-up menu to match the service, thanks to the collaborative expertise of current Local Taco chef Therese Everette and former Zola owner & chef Deb Paquette. On our trial run, we tasted duck taquitos, jumbo jalapeño tater tots and smoked salmon along with an assortment of our favorite tacos from the current menu. And oh, the margaritas! The Brentwood bar played host to more delicious margarita and sangria flavors than we could count (especially after a glass or three), all made from scratch from fresh ingredients.

The Local Taco Brentwood is open from 11am-10pm at 146 Pewitt Drive (formerly Harpeth Grill, behind Judge Beans). Follow them on Twitter for daily specials, happy hour deals and mouth-watering brunch menus. If you make it out to the new location in Brentwood, let us and our other readers know what you think in the comments.
