Happy Hour: One Leg To Stand On

  • Governor Phil has actually stepped out to agree with the Jackson’s Bar & Bistro server who recently filed a complaint with TOSHA claiming that the restaurant’s decision to allow guns creates an unsafe work environment for staff. [WZTV]
  • Lots of important things happening tomorrow! The most important is the deadline for applying for flood-related tax relief. The second would be that Music City Bowl tickets go on sale. [Tennessean & City Paper]
  • Our neighbors up in Clarksville finally got their second sewer treatment plant working for the first time since the May flood. The city sustained around $14 million in damage. [Tennessean]
  • A small earthquake–a 2.7 on the Richter scale–rocked East Tennessee yesterday. Well, it didn’t rock East Tennessee so much as it just gave them a gentle push. [Tennessean]
  • It’s not every day we get to report on rapper feuds around here, so forgive our enthusiasm! Just when thought things couldn’t get any more dicey for Nashville rapper Young Buck, he’s apparently about to sue 50 Cent, G-Unit Inc. and some other people. [City Paper]

Bright & Early: Sign Of The Times Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Belmont University has finally started construction on the multimillion-dollar sportsplex planned for Rose Park in the Edgehill neighborhood. The only problem is that someone keeps vandalizing the construction site by spraypainting, smashing headlights and peeing on building equipment. The complex, which has been controversial from the outset, will be open to the public and Belmont will be paying the city to use it for sporting events. It’s slated to be completed in February.

Happy Hour: The Climb

  • To commemorate the anniversary of 9/11, several hundred firefighters from at least nine states will be gathering in Nashville to climb the Pinnacle stairs four times in remembrance of what firefighters had to do on September 11, 2001. The climb totals 110 flights of stairs, which is the equivalent of the stairs inside the World Trade Center towers. [WKRN]
  • We’re not even sure we know what a $31,000 wristwatch looks like (thanks, Google), but that was just one of the items seized from Young Buck’s home when he was raided by the IRS a few weeks back. [Tennessean]
  • Applications for property tax breaks on flood-damaged properties are due tomorrow. [WPLN]
  • The federal officials who are investigating the fires at the Murfreesboro mosque construction site stated that they “haven’t seen any indications that this is any type of domestic terrorism,” and there are “no indicators that we’re aware of that would put us in the position of a hate crime.” [Post Politics]
  • Meanwhile in West Tennessee, the locals seem to be getting along with their new neighbors just fine. [Commercial Appeal]
  • Commerce Secretary Gary Locke paid Nashville a visit today to talk with some top music industry executives about music piracy. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: Accidents Happen Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re running on a tight schedule this morning, so here is your abbreviated Bright & Early:

  • The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office is shaking things up a bit at the jail in response to that murder suspect who was accidentally released back in February. In addition to suspending two of the officers involved, they’ll be sending everyone else to training and changing a few of the policies. Supposedly, the error happened because a new officer didn’t see a pop-up window while processing his release that stated he was being held of murder charges and shouldn’t be turned loose. [Tennessean]
  • In the latest installment of the controversial Murfreesboro mosque, some vandals lit all some the construction equipment on fire over the weekend. The incident is being investigated by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. [Tennessean]
  • We might see a few sprinkles today, but things will be drying off and heating up for the rest of the week. Is it fall yet? [Nashville WX]
  • Nashville’s magnet schools are seeing a big decrease in the amount of students who qualify for admission because of those changes that were made to standardized testing that caused everyone to start scoring poorly. Under the old system, 20-30% were eligible based on their test scores, but now only 7-8% do. Now they’re trying to revamp their admissions requirements to make sure they’ve got enough kids to fill the seats. [Tennessean]
  • God bless Allan Benton and his bacon. [City Paper]
  • More than 500 flood victims have taken advantage of the free legal assistance hotline for flood victims set up by the Tennessee Bar Association, the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services and several other organizations back in May. If you find yourself needing flood-related legal help, give ‘em a ring at (888) 395-9297 Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. [WTVF]
  • If you’ve ever wanted to become a Tennessee State Trooper, now’s your chance. They’re accepting applications for the spring Cadet class through September 17th. [WTVF]
  • We were pretty certain that Steve McNair’s short-lived restaurant venture Gridiron9 was gone for good after McNair’s murder, but a new owner is stepping up to the plate and hoping to reopen it within a month. [WTVF]

SUNDAY

Happy Hour: Flutter By

  • Because it’s Friday and flamingos are funny-looking, here’s a slideshow of the new flamingo exhibit at the Nashville Zoo. [Tennessean]
  • If you haven’t been out to a Sounds game this season, this weekend is your last chance of the season! And it’s not a million degrees outside, so that’s a plus. They’ve also got some great things going on for flood relief. [WKRN]
  • Metro is beefing up security along Gay Street downtown after noticing a spike in crime in that area. They’ll be installing some giant construction-grade spotlights in hopes of making things a little more difficult for potential criminals. [WSMV]
  • A young Titans fan from Spring Hill got quite the exciting surprise when he showed up on the front of all the Titans tickets for this season. [WTVF]
  • There’s pretty much an all-out coup going on in the ‘Noog, where Tea Partiers are close to having enough petition signatures to force a recall election for Mayor Ron Littlefield. [WZTV]

Bright & Early: Run Run Run Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’re running a little late this morning, so you know the drill. Here’s your abbreviated Bright & Early:

  • Room In The Inn’s new downtown homeless center will act as a one-stop service hub for Nashville’s homeless. The new $13 million building can hold a few hundred visitors a day.  [WPLN]
  • Forbes estimates that the Titans are worth an estimated $994 million. They’re ranked 18th most valuable out of 32 franchises. Go Titans! [WKRN]
  • Speaking of the Titans, everyone’s just holding their breath, waiting for Chris Johnson to pull one of his famous long runs out of his bag of tricks. [The City Paper]
  • Tomorrow is Tennessee’s Free Hunting Day, conveniently scheduled for the start of squirrel season. [WZTV]
  • Three Tennessee coal ash dump sites are among those accused of polluting their local drinking water supplies in a new report from the Environmental Integrity Project, Earthjustice and the Sierra Club. Nasty things like arsenic and heavy metals showed up in testing. Yum! [WTVF]
  • We’d probably sleep easier if sinkholes didn’t exist, like this 14-foot deep, 4-foot wide (and growing) sinkhole in Antioch. The property owner is scared that the sinkhole might eventually swallow her house, and we don’t blame her. [WSMV]

Happy Hour: Jack And Back Edition

  • Congratulations to us! Nashville-area unemployment hit 8.8% last month, which is the lowest we’ve seen it in a while. [Tennessean]
  • Lane closures on I-40 around White Bridge are getting an early start this weekend. [WKRN]
  • The MTA offices were found to be using a regular ol’ foghorn as a fire alarm because the real one hasn’t been working since the flood. [WSMV]
  • BNA’s oldest runway will be reopening finally, which means there should be less traffic on the other runways from here on out. And if you live in the line of fire for the other three runways, you should be hearing a lot less noise. [WTVF]
  • Jack Daniel’s distillery is hoping to convince Congress to create a national holiday commemorating their founder’s 160th birthday in September. The petition will be floating around Facebook and some bars, but you can also show your support by texting JDBday to 68405. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: Monkeying Around Edition

Good morning, Nashville. The USDA is finally charging Vanderbilt University “a hefty fine” for the dead baby monkey that turned up in a washing machine. Apparently the monkey was a research subject in a university lab when someone washed the nesting boxes and forgot to take the monkey out first. Of course! The fine includes charges for a couple of other shady incidents involving a couple of hamsters and a dog.
