Happy Hour: Step Aside
- The 8th Avenue Greyhound bus station is finally moseying its sweet self down to a temporary location on Charlotte so that crews can get on with the Music City Center construction. The bus station was pretty much the last thing standing in the way of the construction site. [WSMV]
- The top four candidates for governor will be going toe-to-toe tonight at Belmont University tonight. For those keeping score, there are currently three Republican candidates left and one lone Democrat. And this guy. [WTVF]
- A Nashville postal worker is being charged with stealing everyone’s Valentine’s Day cards and hiding them in the ceiling, which is illegal in case you were wondering. He also stole some pills. [City Paper]
- That Shelbyville lady who pinned a note on her adopted kid and shipped him back to Russia still hasn’t talked to the local law enforcement about it, though we feel pretty confident she’s had to speak with other agencies. [Tennessean]

For Real, This Time: Pinkberry Coming To Nashville, Cool Springs
On the local fro-yo front, Yogurt Oasis, Krave, Provence’s Yummi-Yo!, Tasti D-Lite, Yogurt World Cafe, Menchie’s and Sweet CeCe’s aren’t enough for the Nashville frozen yogurt elite, as we don’t see a month or two pass by without hearing murmurs of the almighty Pinkberry coming to Nashville. And do we ever have good news for Pinkberry enthusiasts in Nashville… Yes, the franchise is coming here, and they’re bringing us double the frozen treats, with at least two stores in both Nashville and Cool Springs!
Nashville’s new Pinkberry has finally made it out of the Google cache and on to Pinkberry.com as a “Swirling Soon” store, and is scheduled to open on October 1 at 2304 West End Ave (the old Blockbuster location). Details are scarce for the Cool Springs store, but they’re hiring! And it sounds like they have their sights set on locations in Green Hills and the Gulch, too.
Let’s hear from you – Are you excited that Pinkberry is opening in Nashville? Will you stick to your Sweet CeCe’s, split your loyalties, or just start consuming twice as much yogurt (the obvious solution)?

Nashvillest Loves You: Hannah’s “Nashville Boroughs” Poster Giveaway
Every now and then, we stumble across local artists doing things we really love, and occasionally they even want to share their talents with Nashvillest and our readers! Hannah Schmitt, a local graphic designer, came up with the idea of creating a Nashville “boroughs” poster as she looked for something similar to hang in her own home. Says Hannah:
I designed these based on the old school style destination blinds that they would hang in train station windows showing the various destinations the trains would be going to. I wanted one but when shopping around, realized I couldn’t spend the NINE hundred dollars they’re going for and decided to make my own– and then share them with Nashville!
The result was an affordable, customizable, uniquely-Nashville art piece, and we’re kind of drooling over it. And we have one to give away to a lucky Nashvillest reader! You can enter to win one of two ways, or do both and be entered to win twice!
1. Leave a comment on this post, and tell us your favorite thing about Nashville. Your comment must include a valid email address to qualify (don’t worry, we’re the only ones who can see it, and we won’t use your email address for anything except to notify you if you win!).
2. Tweet about this contest. The easiest way is to retweet this tweet! To qualify, your tweet must include the hashtag #nashvillest and the original bit.ly link (http://bit.ly/nash_poster), and follow us @nashvillest (so we can DM you if you win). Also, if your account is protected, be sure to authorize us to follow you back! You can’t win if we can’t see your tweet.
The contest ends at 12pm CDT on Friday, July 16, so get your entries in before then! More than two entries will result in disqualification. You must have a mailing address in the lower 48 US states to win.
Of course, winning isn’t the only way to get your hands on one of these babies. The posters are 12×35″, printed on a thick, matte paper, and can be purchased framed ($60) or unframed ($35) at Hannah’s Etsy store. Don’t see your favorite part of Nashville on the poster? She’ll gladly customize one for you.
UPDATE: The winner has been chosen! Congratulations to Taylor M (@veritas3241), and thanks to everyone else for your amazing entries. We had a great time watching the Nashville love fest grow in our comments section.

Bright & Early: Bzzzzzzzzz Edition
Good morning, Nashville. More than 5,000 people turned out to Nashville’s free World Cup watch party at LP Field yesterday. Though we didn’t exactly have folks dancing on top of buses and such, we hear it was a pretty crazy party. There were giveaways, and inflatables, and most importantly vuvuzelas! Meanwhile, the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau was there gathering enough photo and video evidence (hopefully!) to prove that we are a soccer-loving town and FIFA should drop everything and give us the 2018 or 2022 World Cup immediately. Is it a little far-fetched? Sure. But we’ve already made it through a few rounds of cuts, it would pump an estimated half-billion dollars into our economy, and it would also just be pretty badass. Vote here!
- Almost up. Even with all of the election talk, we sometimes forget that Governor Phil won’t be Governor Phil for much longer. Despite the quickly-approaching end of his term, he’s vowing to continue working hard until it’s time to pass the torch.
- Don’t forget your rain boots. Our weekend turned out to be a little soggier than we anticipated, and it looks like the rain is going to keep up for the next couple of days. The good news is that it should be a little cooler today and tomorrow before the blazing heat returns later this week.
- Bits & pieces. The Natchez Trace bridge is beautiful, but deadly … A big shoutout goes to last week’s Little People of America convention, which brought $2.5 million in revenue to Nashville … Taco Mamacita is finally able to sell normal beer … We’re not sure we’ll ever be able to forgive Hank Williams Jr. for this.

This Week: Nashville Restaurants Make “Lemon:Aid Stands” For Clean Water
Remember your first childhood lemonade stand? Every year when summer rolls around, we’re reminded of those long, hot summer days at the end of the driveway peddling $0.25 cups of lemonade to anyone who dared to walk, jog or drive past the house. Local non-profit Blood:Water Mission is bringing back the lemonade stand with their summer Lemon:Aid campaign, inviting people all over the country to open a lemonade stand to raise money for access to clean water in Africa. What’s the going rate for a paper cup of lukewarm lemon-sugar water these days, anyway?
Between long hours at work and summer traveling, an actual lemonade stand is out of the question for many of us. But Nashville restaurants and bakeries are providing another way for us to participate in Lemon:Aid this week! Chick-fil-A and 9 Fruits in Franklin, The Cocoa Tree and Cupcake Collection in Germantown, Bravo Gelato in Green Hills and East Nashville’s Marché, Nuvo Burrito, Silly Goose and Foxy Baking Company are all participating by selling featured Lemon:Aid items this week (today through Saturday, July 17), and a portion of the proceeds from the sales of these items will go straight to Blood:Water Mission.
You don’t have to twist our arms to get us to eat burritos, gelato and chocolate for a good cause. Visit one (or two… or three) of the participating businesses this week, and you’ll be supporting local businesses and a local non-profit by filling your belly with delicious, local eats. Win-win!

Happy Hour: Drifting Along
- The Metro Council is looking at some creative ways to help small businesses that were hurt by the flood, including car washes that had to close for nearly a month due to water restrictions. [WSMV]
- Congratulations to Mayor Dean for successfully completing his annual bus commute adventure today. But why the face? He’s got the whole bus to himself! [WSMV]
- Predictably, mosquitos have been worse than ever after the flood thanks to all of that standing water that was hanging around. Emergency rooms are seeing more folks sick with illnesses they believe to be transmitted by the critters, so wear some bug spray and try to steer clear of the ‘skeeters with West Nile. [WSMV]
- From the Department of “Holy Crap, This Happened,” a tractor trailer flipped over on top of a car coming off of Briley Parkway this afternoon. Despite the horrible pictures, the husband, wife and child in the car made it out safe and sound. The truck is said to have taken the curve a little too fast. [WKRN]
- Nashville Shores has seen a rash of car break-ins in the past two weeks with 20 cars being burglarized. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: The Way It Moves Edition
Good morning, Nashville. It’s one of those weird weather weeks again with blazing heat and pop-up storms–one of which actually peeled the roof clean off of a Smyrna gas station. One thing we shouldn’t have to worry about is a trend of heat-related power outages because NES insists they have it under control. In years past, the combination of heat and humidity has caused a spike in energy demand, leading to some outage problems. NES officials say that type of thing probably won’t be a problem until August. Or maybe sooner! Who knows. At any rate, look for some nasty storms this afternoon which should come along just in time to ruin your Friday night cookout plans. TGIF!
- O captain! Our captain! While the rest of the world was watching LeBron’s fancy television special and Cleveland collectively blowing a gasket (in Comic Sans) and maybe also that soccer Very Important Soccer Game, many of us in Nashville were watching the Preds crown Shea Weber as the new team captain, replacing Jason Arnott. Weber, 24, is the youngest person in the team’s history to hold the title.
- Not on our watch. The US Bureau of Justice mistakenly reported that Davidson County has one of the highest inmate mortality records in the nation, and now our sheriff’s office is demanding a recount. The bureau actually admitted that they messed up the numbers, although Davidson County didn’t help matters when they submitted 10 duplicate death reports. But we’ve yet to find out where we really stand.
- Bits & pieces. Nashville’s median home price is the highest it’s been in two years … Despite everyone’s best efforts to find drama in this situation, Gaylord’s CEO says that there has been no rift between the company and the mayor’s office over the money issue … When given the option to play Lane Kiffin’s new team in 2011, the Vols said “No thank you.” … A new immigration law in Tennessee will likely be superseded by a federal law that promises to do the job better …

Happy Hour: Flower Power
- As predicted, Mayor Dean announced today at a press conference that he’s going to try to divert some hotel tax revenue to help pay for repairs to the Grand Old Opry House, which he says is more important than the Opryland Hotel. [WPLN]
- Stanford University is threatening us with talk of future heat waves that will put this one to shame because the climates are a-changin’. [WSMV]
- We knew there was an ulterior motive when we heard about the big, free World Cup bash at LP Field on Sunday. Apparently it’s all about making Nashville look good for the Powers That Be who decide where future World Cups are played since Nashville is in the running. But wait, this is an ulterior motive that we fully support. To LP Field! [City Paper]
- In case you’re looking for something to do this weekend and you’re just not into soccer, you could try out for the Milwaukee Brewers! We just realized that even if we wanted to, we’re too old, which is very depressing. [WSMV]
- Bellevue is running out of money to help flood victims. If you’re still checking out places to donate, you might consider helping these guys out. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Look Out Below Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the past couple of years, most of us have a pretty good idea of how difficult the job market has been. The summer job market has also been hit pretty hard by the recession, since a lot of professional adults have had to clamor for retail and food service work to make ends meet after layoffs and downsizing. This, in turn, has left teens without a whole lot of options. A new study estimates that summer jobs are down almost 30% from what they were at this time last year, which tells us we’re not out of the woods yet. So before you read your kids the riot act for being lazy this summer, consider the valuable life lesson they’re learning about what a tanking economy looks like.
- Dam it. The latest flood damage tallies are rolling in from area dams, which took a $50-60 million hit back in May. The Army Corps of Engineers says that the Cheatham Dam near Ashland City is in the worst shape while Old Hickory, Center Hill and Dale Hollow seem to be doing alright. A $200 million appropriation for repairs is making its way through Congress as we speak.
- They’re certainly no Banksy. Three Franklin vandals were busted on top of the District Attorney General’s office with everything they needed to give the office a graffiti makeover. They’d already spray-painted a parking garage, but a Puckett’s Grocery employee spotted them, followed them to the DA’s office, and called the cops.
- Bits & pieces. Mayor Dean will be giving a 1pm press conference from the Grand Ole Opry House about restoration efforts … If there’s a recession going on out there, no one has told 12th South about it … Nashville foreclosures rose in May … It’s so hot outside that we might actually be looking forward to the rain tomorrow.
