Happy Hour: Christmas Came Early This Year
- The folks in charge of the Music City Center construction are beefing up their hiring and training procedures to ensure that they’re not employing any illegal immigrants. This comes on the heels of a (very poorly worded) concern expressed by Rep. Mike Turner a few days ago, which he then filed in the form of a formal complaint with the Tennessee Department of Labor. [City Paper]
- As promised, Opryland Hotel employees started hanging the Christmas decorations today and announced that their annual “Country Christmas” celebration will kick off on November 19th–just four days after the hotel is scheduled to re-open. If you want to book a night in advance and show them some love, they’re already taking reservations. [WSMV]
- The Army Corps of Engineers released a 292-page review detailing everything they did and did not do in response to the May flood, citing poor communication and lack of backup systems as possible causes for mishaps. Though they maintain that what they did saved the city, they’ll head to the Senate tomorrow for a hearing tomorrow morning and are being blamed by many folks for pushing the situation from bad to worse. [Tennessean]
- Two dogs were killed by a swarm of killer bees yesterday. A representative from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture is still trying to figure out what kind of killer bees they were, exactly. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Eat Out For Nashville Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Despite the economy swirling down the proverbial toilet in the past few years, Nashville’s restaurants have been doing remarkably well–better, in fact, than most other cities in the country. While the rest of America saw a net restaurant loss of 1%, we actually had a net gain of 0.5%. So, go us! Meanwhile, Puffy Muffin did so well during the recession that they’re sending 48 of their employees on an Alaska cruise and we’re fully convinced we chose the wrong career path.
- Slow clap. When it comes to taking care of your grads, Vanderbilt is showing everyone how it’s done. Under their new GradMed program, they’re offering up to 180 days of health insurance coverage to recent graduates while they look for jobs and prepare for grad school.
- Beer bill deferred. Councilman Jamie Hollin’s proposed ordinance that would’ve abolished the 100-foot rule for restaurants selling beer was deferred until August. As we learned with Taco Mamacita’s Dirty Sanchez saga, restaurants currently have to be at least 100 feet from residential areas in order to get a beer permit.
- Bits & pieces. The Biscuit Lady’s pre-taped episode of Paula Deen will air on Saturday, nearly four months after her death … Seven Ensworth students were charged in a bomb scare this morning … Storms possible this afternoon … Governor Phil slammed several lawmakers’ planned field trip to Arizona to learn about immigration law … Metro has had to shell out nearly $1 million in settlements this year.
