Happy Hour: Drifting Along
- The Metro Council is looking at some creative ways to help small businesses that were hurt by the flood, including car washes that had to close for nearly a month due to water restrictions. [WSMV]
- Congratulations to Mayor Dean for successfully completing his annual bus commute adventure today. But why the face? He’s got the whole bus to himself! [WSMV]
- Predictably, mosquitos have been worse than ever after the flood thanks to all of that standing water that was hanging around. Emergency rooms are seeing more folks sick with illnesses they believe to be transmitted by the critters, so wear some bug spray and try to steer clear of the ‘skeeters with West Nile. [WSMV]
- From the Department of “Holy Crap, This Happened,” a tractor trailer flipped over on top of a car coming off of Briley Parkway this afternoon. Despite the horrible pictures, the husband, wife and child in the car made it out safe and sound. The truck is said to have taken the curve a little too fast. [WKRN]
- Nashville Shores has seen a rash of car break-ins in the past two weeks with 20 cars being burglarized. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: The Way It Moves Edition
Good morning, Nashville. It’s one of those weird weather weeks again with blazing heat and pop-up storms–one of which actually peeled the roof clean off of a Smyrna gas station. One thing we shouldn’t have to worry about is a trend of heat-related power outages because NES insists they have it under control. In years past, the combination of heat and humidity has caused a spike in energy demand, leading to some outage problems. NES officials say that type of thing probably won’t be a problem until August. Or maybe sooner! Who knows. At any rate, look for some nasty storms this afternoon which should come along just in time to ruin your Friday night cookout plans. TGIF!
- O captain! Our captain! While the rest of the world was watching LeBron’s fancy television special and Cleveland collectively blowing a gasket (in Comic Sans) and maybe also that soccer Very Important Soccer Game, many of us in Nashville were watching the Preds crown Shea Weber as the new team captain, replacing Jason Arnott. Weber, 24, is the youngest person in the team’s history to hold the title.
- Not on our watch. The US Bureau of Justice mistakenly reported that Davidson County has one of the highest inmate mortality records in the nation, and now our sheriff’s office is demanding a recount. The bureau actually admitted that they messed up the numbers, although Davidson County didn’t help matters when they submitted 10 duplicate death reports. But we’ve yet to find out where we really stand.
- Bits & pieces. Nashville’s median home price is the highest it’s been in two years … Despite everyone’s best efforts to find drama in this situation, Gaylord’s CEO says that there has been no rift between the company and the mayor’s office over the money issue … When given the option to play Lane Kiffin’s new team in 2011, the Vols said “No thank you.” … A new immigration law in Tennessee will likely be superseded by a federal law that promises to do the job better …
