Happy Hour: Flower Power

  • As predicted, Mayor Dean announced today at a press conference that he’s going to try to divert some hotel tax revenue to help pay for repairs to the Grand Old Opry House, which he says is more important than the Opryland Hotel. [WPLN]
  • Stanford University is threatening us with talk of future heat waves that will put this one to shame because the climates are a-changin’. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: Look Out Below Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the past couple of years, most of us have a pretty good idea of how difficult the job market has been. The summer job market has also been hit pretty hard by the recession, since a lot of professional adults have had to clamor for retail and food service work to make ends meet after layoffs and downsizing. This, in turn, has left teens without a whole lot of options. A new study estimates that summer jobs are down almost 30% from what they were at this time last year, which tells us we’re not out of the woods yet. So before you read your kids the riot act for being lazy this summer, consider the valuable life lesson they’re learning about what a tanking economy looks like.
