Nashville Symphony’s Free Regions Community Concerts [Better Late Than Never]

While we love our beautiful (and currently soggy) Schermerhorn symphony center, there’s something to be said for relaxing on a blanket in the park on a summer evening, listening to the Nashville Symphony perform one of their Regions Community Concerts. For free. We totally dropped the ball on keeping you guys informed ahead of the first concert in the series, but there’s still seven more this month, so we hope you’ll forgive us.

Sunday, June 13, 2010, 7:00 p.m.- Crockett Park, Brentwood
Monday, June 14, 2010, 8:00 p.m.- East Park, Nashville
Tuesday, June 15, 2010, 7:00 p.m.- Cumberland University, Lebanon
Tuesday, June 22, 2010, 7:30 p.m.- Centennial Park, Nashville
Wednesday, June 23, 2010, 7:00 p.m.- Key Park, Lafayette
Tuesday, June 29, 2010, 7:30 p.m.- Centennial Park, Nashville
Wednesday, June 30, 2010, 8:00 p.m.- Bicentennial Mall, Nashville

Don’t just take our word on how great these free summer concerts are. Our opinionated photographer friend Chris Wage thinks you should go too.

Miss Martha’s Annual Crankin’ Will Cool Down Nashville This Saturday

Come celebrate a special year for Miss Martha and her crankin’ – It’s the Purity Dairy-sponsored ice cream social’s 25th birthday, and each year just gets better than the last. Picture over 500 gallons of homemade ice cream in every flavor you can possibly imagine (and a few that you can’t imagine). And yes, we said homemade. Do we really have to twist your arms to get you out to this one? You can gorge yourself on frozen treats, gloat over the fact that you’re not downtown, and support the Martha O’Bryan Center. It’s a  Win-win.

Purity Dairy’s Miss Martha’s Ice Cream Crankin’ takes place on Sunday, June 13 at First Presbyterian Church on Franklin Pike in Nashville. Tasting tickets to the event are just $13 for adults and $10 for kids. Ice cream will be crankin’ from 4-6pm, but come early at 3 for live music and fun activities for kids.

Nashville Rollergirls Host Honky Tonk Stomp This Weekend [Guest Posts]

(The legit ladies, photo courtesy of Chris Wage)

I’m not entirely sure what came over me. Maybe it was all those ads for Whip It, but somehow I found myself on a mission to to drop in on and participate in a Roller Derby practice.

Somewhere on 65 it hit me: not only am I about to humiliate myself, but I’m about to do it on skates. Roller skates, and I haven’t worn roller skates in roughly 20 years. As visions of Amazonian women on wheels kicking my ass flowed through my mind I considered the option of just watching practice instead.

As I pulled into the fairgrounds I was soon surrounded by a crowd of women. As I began to look around I suddenly realized that these were normal women (with extraordinary talents). They were teachers, mothers, biologists at Vanderbilt, bartenders and everything in between. Not only that, but they were nice (till they started practicing!) and welcoming. I can’t count the number of times someone told me I should come back and actually try out.

In no time we were up and skating (or in my case, flailing). 45 minutes later as I gasped for air and choked down water I came to the conclusion that Zumba has nothing on a roller girl practice.

While I’d encourage anyone who is interested in being a Roller Girl to attend their next round of try-outs starting July 18th, be warned: being a Rollergirl is not just a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. They practice for at least 10 hours a week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday), they pay insurance dues, they raise a lot of money for equipment and space rental, and since the league is 100% self run, they basically maintain and do it all.

The Nashville Rollergirls are hosting the Honky Tonk Stomp, also known as the Tennessee State Championship between Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis here this weekend, and if you can scrounge up a ticket to this weekends event, do it! Not only will it be a fun way to spend an afternoon, but it’s also the Roller Girls last weekend at the fairgrounds, because yes, the rumors are true, starting July 10th you can catch them in the Municipal Auditorium.

Doors open for the Honky Tonk Stomp this Saturday, June 12 at 4PM with the Memphis Hustlin’ Rollers playing the Hard Knox All Stars first. Music City All Stars will play the Hard Knox All Stars after that, followed by Music City All Stars playing Memphis Hustlin’ Rollers. Each game has it’s own ticket, so go for 1,2 or 3! You can grab your tickets online here.

Editor’s Note: Guest author Danica Mercer is a proud eastsider and works as a nonprofit consultant by day (you should hire her) and a baker/writer/singer by night. You can find her online at The Days In Between.

Bright & Early: Friends In Need Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Today in CMA news (which is the only kind of news there is), Mayor Dean hopped on the stage at last night’s concert at LP Field and thanked everyone for coming to Nashville despite our mess and helping us get back on our feet. Almost as heartwarming as the Mayor’s speech was the outpouring of donations from both CMT and Smithfield Foods, Inc., who gave $40,000 and 150,000 servings of ham respectively to the Second Harvest Food Bank. On the not-so-happy front, 40 CMAers have been treated for heat emergencies; if you’re going to be out and about this week, remember to take (and chug) plenty of water!

Happy Hour: You Go, Team Coco

Y’all have been doing a great job keeping us updated from the front lines of, well, the Conan line. Some crazies arrived at Third Man Records as early as 9am to stake out their place in line and Jack White himself rewarded their efforts by pelting them with water bottles. But it’s all good, because [...]

Bright & Early: The Waiting Game Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Today seems to be pretty light on the news-that’s-not-about-CMA-Fest front (except for this important update from FEMA about assistance for renters), so we’re going to give you what we’ve got, in bullet form:

  • The Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau says we should “probably appreciate our visitors a little more this year because we need them a little more this year.” Or maybe we should work on appreciating them a little more every year since our tourism is a huge part of our city. This doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun with them along the way, though, right? [WKRN]
  • And while we’re in the business of appreciating things, all the free stuff kicks off today. Hopefully we’ll have some time here at Nashvillest to bring you the highlights, but in case we don’t, you can check out the schedule for yourselves. [WKRN]
  • Speaking of free… Conan! Tonight! [Nashville Cream]
  • There is a 50% chance that we and our 200,000 guests will get stormed on again today. Good news is that it probably won’t be as widespread as yesterday. [Nashville WX]
  • An 11-year old boy trekked to Nashville for the CMA Fest all the way from Australia with a little help from his friends at the Make-A-Wish Foundation. [WKRN]

Happy Hour: Centerstage

  • Conan revealed this afternoon that he’ll be making a stop at Jack White’s Third Man Records tomorrow evening at 8pm, first come first served! Which means you should all probably start getting in line right now and also save us a spot. [Tennessean]
  • The weather hasn’t been real nice to us today with some of those pesky pop-up storms rumbling through the region and drenching all those poor tourists. [City Paper]
  • A TennCare contractor’s computer containing the social security numbers of 10,000 people was stolen at some point this spring. Anyone who was affected should be receiving a letter. [WPLN]
  • Nearly 6,000 of you guys lost power this afternoon, and at least 2,100 of you can blame it on the truck driver who dropped his cell phone and took out a utility pole in Donelson. He was fine, by the way. [City Paper & WKRN]
  • Even the airport grid went down for a bit, causing several flights to be delayed. Hopefully all the CMT Awards folks made it in on time! Because a country music blue carpet without the cast of Jersey Shore is not a country music blue carpet at all……… [City Paper]

Bright & Early: Business Up Front Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Today’s the day! CMApocalypse 2010 is off to a stormy start, but hopefully all thunder and lighting and wind and rain will stay far away from downtown for this morning’s kickoff parade. Don’t forget to check out the lengthy list of road closures, which started at 8am today. And speaking of traffic, people have already started lining up at the gates of Bonnaroo and clogging up the entirety of I-24 between here and the ‘Noog. So if that’s a route you typically take, you may want to take a look at TDOT’s handy map of suggested Bonnaroo detours.

Happy Hour: We Have The Situation

  • It seems like we’ve had more than our fair share of situations this year, but we’re finally about to experience the real deal: Snooki and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino of Jersey Shore fame will be rolling through town this week for the CMT Music Awards. Fist pumps all around! [MetroMix]
  • Last we heard Joe’s Crab Shack was still down for the count, but they’re opening up just in time for the influx of hungry CMA fans. And the best part is, they’ll be hosting a dinner for flood victims from St. Luke’s tomorrow night before the crowds start pouring in. [WKRN]
  • The free downtown wi-fi network is getting a boost this week. The only catch is that your start page will always be CMAfest.com instead of nashvillest.com when you log onto it. Small price to pay, right? [Tennessean]
  • Apparently the Tennessee Association of Utility Districts has an annumal competition to see whose water tastes better, and Dickson County won. Whatever, ours makes better beer. [Tennessean]
  • Governor Phil laid the proverbial smack down on state lawmakers for passing a resolution commending Arizona for their controversial immigration bill, saying he “wished they had spent more time on the budget and being better lawmakers.” Zing! [WSMV]
