Happy Hour: Up Up And Away
- The Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau reports that CMA fans dropped a whopping $24 million into the city’s economy while they were here last weekend, breaking last year’s record by $2 million. [Tennessean]
- According to Forbes, Nashville is getting most of its new folks from Florida, Chicago and the northeast. [Nashville Post]
- Mosquitoes and chiggers are worse than they’ve been in years, according to the Mosquito Squad of Middle Tennessee, which we did not know existed until this moment. And we’d be inclined to agree with them as we sit here furiously scratching our 54 bug bites from the weekend. [WKRN]
- If you’re making a scheduled visit to your probation officer, you might want to leave your bag of pot at home. [WZTV]
- Ke$ha is throwing Nashville a big party tonight, for flood relief, and all you (er, us) crazies who are going can rest easy because she says she “won’t be acting like too much of a crazy idiot.” Well then! [Tennessean]
- The city says that 75% of the money spent on contractors for building the Music City Center will be spent locally. [Tennessean]

The Other Best-Of: Toast Of Music City Voting Ends June 20
Just a few days left for you to pick your favorite local restaurants, bars, celebrities, blogs (ahem) and more in The Tennessean’s 3rd annual Toast of Music City contest. Voting ends on June 20, and from now until then, you can vote once a day. While winning the “Best Blog” title in 2009 was great (and a 2nd giant vinyl “Best Blog” banner would compliment the Nashvillest HQ decor so well), we really only need you to help with one thing this year. Help us vote Mr. Tim as the best local weatherperson! Why? Because we miss seeing his face and his ties on the teevee every day, and we think he needs a nice, big “Best Weatherperson” commemorative banner to hang in the TwangTown TV offices. And, okay, we won’t get mad if you drop in a vote or two for us while you’re there. Vote!

Happy Hour: We’re Melting
- Folks downtown may experience power outages Thursday and Friday due to some Music City Center construction (what else?). Good news is, they should only happen between 6-7 am. [WTVF]
- Brentwood-ian Blake Geoffrion became the first Tennessean ever to be drafted into the NHL. Apparently he is the grandson of some other famous hockey player, so it’s basically in his blood. The Preds signed him to an entry-level deal today. [WSMV]
- Check out this adorable animal rescue that happened out in the Herm; firefighters spent three hours trying to pry a 2-day old calf out of a 12-foot sinkhole while its mother watched the whole thing. [WSMV]
- Like any other self-respecting pro athlete, Chris Johnson has taken to the Twitters to vent his frustration with the Titans franchise. [Tennessean]
- If you frequent any of the community centers around town, there may be some fee hikes and membership changes in your future. Hey, the Parks & Rec Department has to keep the lights on somehow. [Tennessean]

Best Idea Ever: Adults-Only Nights At The Adventure Science Center
No, no, not that kind of adults-only. But we kind of want to kiss whoever came up with the brilliant idea of a 21+ evening at the Adventure Science Center. No longer will we be the weird adults using the toys while the kiddos wait. No longer do we have to fear crushing a child in the poop chute. No longer will 10-year-olds point and laugh as we try to wiggle into a harness for gravity-free moonwalking.
The Adventure Science Center will open after-hours (7-10pm) on both June 24 and July 27 for an adults-only Way Late Play Date, and the $15 pricetag on admission includes two very adult beverages and some maybe-or-maybe-not-adult munchies. Or you can grab an adult date and get a pair of tickets for only $25! Tickets can be purchased online in advance.

We just can’t decide if this means there will be more discount gift certificates to go around, or just more frantic fans vying for them.

Bright & Early: The Numbers Game Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Since the flooding happened almost six weeks ago, FEMA has shelled out more than $200 million in federal disaster assistance including $117.8 for housing assistance alone. Additionally, the US Small Business Administration has given more than $64 million in low-interest loans for flood victims and businesses that were hurt by the disaster. Officials say that 62,000 people have registered for some sort of assistance, 15,000 have utilized the recovery centers, and 8,000 have received counseling.
- No guns in parks for Williamson Co. Williamson County passed a new law banning guns from public parks permanently, no matter what the State of Tennessee has to say about it. Under the new law, folks with permits aren’t even allowed to set foot in one of the county’s 28 parks or rec facilities with a gun.
- Keep dreaming. When it comes to the question of whether or not he’ll will return to the Titans this season, Chris Johnson (aptly nicknamed “Every Coach’s Dream”) doesn’t have much to say. Basically, he’s not showing up to practice until someone gives him a raise. His salary for this year is currently set at $550,000.
- Bits & pieces. Sumner County is having a heck of a lot of trouble keeping their food banks stocked since the flood … Metro pools should open back up on June 21st … Locally-owned BP stations say that they’re definitely feeling the weight of the BP boycotts … If you think TDOT is slow now, just wait until the national paint shortage reaches us … We bet you can guess what the forecast is today.

Happy Hour: Recovery, Recovery, Recovery
- It was a record year for CMApocalypse with all four LP Field concerts selling out for the first time ever and attendance up 16.7%. The numbers aren’t quite in yet, but the CMA estimates that it may have grossed more than ever. And since 100% of the proceeds are going to good causes, we like the sound of that. [WKRN]
- Speaking of floods, our hearts go out to the folks in Arkansas and Oklahoma who are dealing with some awful flash flooding much like what we saw last month. And much like us, their story is getting bumped by the oil spill coverage. You can help ‘em out by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross’ disaster relief fund. [Red Cross & CNN]
- A 33-year old security guard who was found dead at the CMA Festival is said to have died from natural causes. [WKRN]
- Vince Young faced the press today and admitted that he “made a mistake” when he beat a guy up at a Dallas strip club this weekend. We’d say! [WKRN]
- And continuing the streak of bad Titans news, the team suspended linebacker Gerald McRath for using performance-enhancing drugs. [WKRN]
- The KKK rallied in Estill Springs yesterday (somewhere between here and the ‘Noog) and decided to make some noble demands like shutting down meth labs and publicizing the sex offender registry. Now if only they could kick that whole racism/hate/bigotry thing. [WSMV]

Bright & (Not So) Early: Welcome To The Fun Zone Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Even your Nashvillest oversleeps sometimes, so here’s a very abbreviated edition of Bright & Early:
- Vince Young was picked up on an assault citation at a Dallas strip club after allegedly pummeling an employee for disresepecting the Texas Longhorns. Why, VY™, why? [WTVF]
- Some cities give their guests flyers to remind them to lock their cars and “park smart.” Our city issues custom guitar picks. [City Paper]
- Around 450 folks had to be treated for heat exhaustion during CMApocalypse, and 20 of them were actually rushed to the hospital. Could someone please cut the A/C on outside? [WTVF]
- The heat sadly resulted in a fatality at Bonnaroo; officials say that the 29 year-old’s body temperature was 108 degrees at the time of death. [WKRN]
- Taylor Swift stretched out her meet & greet to 14.5 hours and met with over 2,000 fans during that time. More than 10,000 folks shuffled through the Bridgestone Arena to catch her free concert at 2:30. [Tennessean]
- Legendary country singer and purveyor-of-sausage Jimmy Dean passed away over the weekend at the age of 81. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame earlier this year. [City Paper]

New York Magazine Goes “Beyond Country” In Nashville

Another day, another didja-know-Nashville-is-more-than-country-music? article. From Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP (x2) to this oldie-but-goodie CNN piece on “Indie Nashville,” the rest of the world has officially caught on to the fact that Nashville isn’t just honky tonks, boot shops and CMApocalypse. New York Magazine is the latest to go “behind the scenes” in Nashville, and they did find a few gems. Alongside the Hutton Hotel, Patterson House, City House, Third Man Records, Venus & Mars, Mercy Lounge, Puckett’s and Arrington Vineyards, your friendly neighborhood Nashvillest also gets a shout out. Well, would you look at that! Thanks, NYMag!

The Weekendist: Not At The ‘Roo Edition

Cheer up, non-Bonnaroo-ers. Your friends at the ‘Roo might just be missing the best weekend for fun stuff in Nashville ever. There’s plenty of things to do right here at home, and you get an unfair advantage at CMApocalypse Bingo. Don’t you feel better already?
FRIDAY
- Blitzen Trapper in-store. Grimey’s, 5:30pm, free. Stopping through on their way out of town (they played at Bonnaroo yesterday) for those of us not lucky enough to be out at the farm, you can catch Blitzen Trapper for free at Grimey’s this evening. It’s an early one!
- CMA Fest at Riverfront Park. Riverfront Park, all day, free. Even the most jaded locals can’t hate on CMApocalypse for bringing free entertainment to our downtown streets (we can, however, hate on the lack of parking). You can catch Rodney Adkins and Craig Morgan for free tonight, or glance through the lineup for Saturday and Sunday to find something that strikes your fancy.
- Movies in Pinkerton Park. Franklin, TN, 8pm, free. We’re not the only ones lucky enough to have Movies in the Park this summer. Our neighbors to the south have their own Movies in the Park, and it starts tonight with one for the kiddos – Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.
SATURDAY
- Free Shred Day. Knowles FiftyForward, 174 Rains Avenue Nashville, TN 37203, 10am-1pm, free. Got a lot of junk mail or sensitive documents to shred, but can’t find the time (or the patience) to remove all the staples and hand-feed three sheets at a time to your home shredder? Hit up Shred On The Run with up to five boxes or bags of stuff to be shredded, and they’ll shred it for free this Saturday!
- Free Fishing Day. Statewide, Saturday is the one day a year you can fish without a license. Unless you’re a kid – Then, you can fish from the 12th through the 18th without a license! Check out the list of free fishing events here, and head out to the garage to unearth that old fishing pole and tackle box.
- Nashville Rollergirls host Honky Tonk Stomp. Tennessee State Fairgrounds, 4pm-9:30pm, $13. Come cheer on our Rollergirls as they host the Tennessee State Championship in their last weekend at the state fairgrounds. You can read all about it, plus an entertaining account of a first-timer’s visit to a Rollergirls practice, here at Nashvillest. For tickets, click here.
- Big Band Dance with J. Bradley Big Band. Centennial Park bandshelter, 7-10pm, free. Dance the cha cha at this week’s Big Band Dance with the J. Bradley Big Band. Don’t know how to dance the cha cha? That’s the point! Take a free dance lesson from 7-7:30, then spend the rest of the evening practicing your newly-acquired dance moves. It’s free, it’s fun, and it’s good for some laughs.
- Andy Davis, Trent Dabbs & Andrew Belle. 3rd & Lindsley, 8pm, $12. CMApocalypse hasn’t silenced all of the non-country local music that Nashville has to offer. Some of our favorite Ten out of Tenn artists are playing at 3rd & Lindsley this weekend, so if you need a breather from the blaring honky tonks, head a few blocks south to recharge.
- 2nd Saturday Outdoor Cinema: Raising Arizona. Belcourt Theatre, 8pm, free. The Belcourt’s annual outdoor summer movie series kicks off this weekend with Raising Arizona. It’s in the parking lot, and it gets really crowded, so we recommend bringing a small folding chair or a very padded blanket to save your rear from the asphalt.
SUNDAY
- 25th Annual Purity Miss Martha’s Ice Cream Crankin‘. First Presbyterian Church (Franklin Road), 3-6pm, $13 at the gate. We already sung Miss Martha’s praises, but we’ll sing ‘em again and again, although 500 gallons of homemade ice cream should speak for itself.
- Landon Pigg, Madi Diaz & Terra Naomi. 3rd & Lindsley, 7pm, $10. Even more great local music of the non-country variety at 3rd & Lindsley this weekend.
- Nashville Symphony Regions Community Concert. Crockett Park (Brentwood), 7pm, free. The Symphony will be in Brentwood on Sunday night for the second of a series of 8 free outdoor concerts this month. And yeah, we already wrote about this too. So go!
