Happy Hour: Let Freedom Ring
- Hooray! We get a holiday from highway construction this weekend too! [WZTV]
- Clarksville’s City Council is getting some fancy-schmancy new iPads to play with, to the tune of $10,000. [WSMV]
- A newly-proposed ordinance would waive building permit fees for flood victims through June 2011. Today is the last day of the current no-fee extension. [City Paper]
- Nashville Global Academy voluntarily surrendered their charter today, making them only the second school in Tennessee to ever lose a charter. [Tennessean]
- We warned you back in 2008, but it looks like the bedbugs in Middle Tennessee aren’t going anywhere. [WSMV]
- The Williamson County Visitor’s Center has opted to join the 21st century and thus now offers free wi-fi. [Post Business]
- Since we’re celebrating freedom and all, we don’t want any of our readers behind bars this weekend! The troopers will be out in full force, so call a cab or a sober friend for a ride if you’re planning on drinking. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Ride That Bike Edition
Good morning, Nashville. In case the LP Field Sinkhole is plaguing your dreams (like it is ours), rest assured that it will be fixed before the Titans first preseason game in August. They’ve also hired a team of engineers to study the sinkhole to figure out how to it happened, but LP Field officials don’t seem to think that there’s any danger of additional sinkholes opening up around the field. Music to our ears.
- Pedal away. Nashville’s free bike sharing program will launch later this summer. Residents will be able to check out one of the city’s 30 bicycles at Shelby Bottoms or the Music City Star riverfront train station to check out one of the city’s 30 bicycles, and hit the road. The full program is expected to roll out next spring.
- Special guest on Capitol Hill. A “tenacious” raccoon is living in the ceiling of Legislative Plaza, breaking into the kitchen and other such terrors.
- Bits & pieces. 2,000-year old human bones found in Rutherford County have been turned over to the state … Bank of Nashville’s CEO is stepping down … “Ceiling Collapses On Man In Shower” … 350 electric car charging stations coming to our neighbors in Knoxville … July is here, get ready for the annual cicadas!

Happy Hour: This Little Piggy Went To Market
- A big ol’ list of laws will go into effect July 1 (that’s Thursday, for anyone keeping track). They make it illegal to sell synthetic urine, allow the Sewanee Inn to sell alcohol for consumption on the premises, require country of origin labeling on catfish, permit handgun carrying while big game bowhunting during the archery-only deer season and add www.tnvacation.com to all of our license plates, among other things. [Post Politics]
- The Tennessee Center for Policy Research’s 2010 Pork Report is out, and a $15 million swimming pool in Kingsport tops the list of wasteful state spending this year. [Post Politics]
- Nashville’s new “We Are Home” program aims to provide an additional $50 million to 2,000 flood victims in the form of low-interest loans and grants. [City Paper]
- Nashville Global Academy, one of the area’s first charter schools, could be shut down by the end of the week due to fiscal irresponsibility. [WSMV]
- Count another 225 jobs in LaVergne and 98 jobs in Cool Springs among the over 2,400 job casualties in Middle Tennessee since the beginning of May. [WKRN]
- Another suspicious package found in Clarksville? Eh, it’s probably just another messy box of ribs. [WSMV]

You Tell Us: What’s The Best Place To Watch Fireworks? [Nashvillest Polls]
All right, Nashville. Reader @rebeccasjones wants to know: What’s the best place in Nashville to watch the fireworks display this 4th of July? Is it from one of the bridges? Is it Love Circle, despite a certain giant square abode? Or do you have a special rooftop spot that we’re not allowed to know about (we’ll only tell a few people, we promise…)
We’re partial to parking on the east side and catching the show from either the pedestrian bridge or the Woodland Street bridge, but we know there are some good non-downtown spots with a clear view and a lot less traffic. So fill us (and our readers) in!
UPDATE: We’re getting some great suggestions in the comments and on Twitter, including the Adventure Science Center, the downtown Hilton’s balcony, on a private office rooftop (lucky!), the Belmont parking garage, downtown churches and more! Keep ‘em coming.

Bright & Early: Sweet Relief Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We’re running a little late this morning, but enjoy your abbreviated Bright & Early on the coolest day in June!
- And commuters rejoice. TDOT has secured $100 million in funding to widen I-65 in Williamson County. The work could begin before the end of summer, and will add lanes to two sections of 65 between Highway 96 and State Route 840.
- Unhappy people. Republican Congressional candidate Lou Ann Zelenik claims to be receiving death threats after her controversial statements about the new Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. Most notably, she declared that the mosque is “designed to fracture the moral and political foundation of Middle Tennessee.”
- Bits & pieces. How could anyone hit the kittens? … Hot dogs pay the bills … East Nashville’s original Lockeland Springs may soon become a Metro park … Almost 200 people showed up last night for the first of four community meetings regarding the city’s flood buyout plan … Too many people getting hit by vehicles this week. What gives, Nashville?

Happy Hour: Don’t Sink The Titans
- In case sinkholes far, far away in Guatemala weren’t terrifying enough, we’ve now got one of our own at LP Field! Clocking in at 30 feet wide and 5-6 feet deep, this sinkhole may be indicative of other poorly-constructed pockets under and around the stadium. Yikes! [Nashville Business Journal]
- Planning to ride the Music City Star to see the fireworks this weekend? We hope you already got tickets, because if not, you missed your chance! [WKRN]
- Homeowners who purchase energy-efficient heating and cooling systems will be eligible for the state’s $5.9 million rebate program when it kicks off in the next week or two, and purchases dating back to April 22 may qualify. [Tennessean]
- Steer clear of Briley at 65 and Elliston on your evening commute! The big wreck from this afternoon won’t be cleared until at least 8pm. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: It’s A Brand New Day Edition
- Dotted line. Governor Phil signed the state’s nearly $30 billion spending plan into law on Friday. The plan includes a relief program for flood victims and saves a program meant to combat our third-world infant mortality rate.
- Eeek. If you notice an extra 1,200 little girls under the age of eleven running around town this week, you have the National AAU Girls 11-under Basketball National Tournament to thank. They’ll be competing all week at the Brentwood A-Game Sportplex, Ensworth and BGA.
- Bits & pieces. A 72-year old woman is in critical condition after being hit by a MTA bus at Charlotte & 4th on Saturday … 18,000 people braved the heat last weekend to attend Nashville’s Pride festival … It’s okay to use the water in LaVergne, now … Second Harvest Food Bank continues to experience record demand … Opryland plans to raise levees by at least 8 feet.

Good morning, Nashville. How ’bout that nasty storm on Saturday night? Mass power outages, downed trees, minor flash flooding and Mama Mia’s roof caving in were just a few of the treats we experienced this weekend, but at least our power outages were due to a storm and not a “very acrobatic and mean-spirited” raccoon [...]
Bright & Early: We’ll Take A Cold Front Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We’re running late this morning, so you know the drill. Your abbreviated Bright & Early:
- Extended! Good news for those who have damaged property due to the flood – FEMA agreed this morning to extend the deadline for filing for federal assistance to August 5.
- Brrr. This weekend is gonna be a hot one, but we can expect some relief in the form of mid-80′s temps next week. A “cold front,” if you will. We’ll take what we can get!
- Get in line. Single-game Titans tickets will go on sale at 10am on July 31, which also happens to be the first day of the Titans training camp. There will be about 3,000 single-game tickets available for each of their 8 regular season home games and 2 preseason home games.
- Waking up in Vegas. Can’t come to Nashville because your reservations at Opryland were flooded out? Vegas is obviously the next logical choice! Meanwhile, while the guests are going elsewhere, Opryland is working hard to restore its original shine, including a new and updated look for many of the hotel’s atriums and lobbies.
- Bits & pieces. Stay cool out there, we don’t need any Nashvillians kicking the bucket … A Hickory Hollow duo stole a neighbor’s pet python and attempted to sell it at a nearby pet store … No more free parking at BNA with a handicapped tag or plate.

Happy Hour: Bing Bang Boom
- We all knew this was inevitable when half of NES went underwater last month, but a rate increase in our electric bills was finally announced today. It could be as late as January before it takes effect. [WSMV]
- The feds made a big gang bust in Nashville today and indicted 26 members of the Bloods, whom they suspect have been behind several murder conspiracies and violent crimes around here in the past few months. The real kicker is that gang prevention non-profit Galaxy Star is being accused of working behind the scenes to support them. [WKRN]
- A clouded leopard cub was born at the Nashville Zoo last month and it is really, really cute. And rare. [WTVF]
- Nothing says “Tennessee” like moonshine and NASCAR. Finally, there is a tourist attraction that encompasses both. [WZTV]
- We suspect that at least a few of you are reading this from the iPhone line at the Green Hills Apple Store. Apparently it was quite the zoo over there today. [WTVF]
- Tennessee now has an infant mortality rate that’s comparable to that of a third world country. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Make It Stop Edition
Good morning, Nashville. The lack of news today leaves us with nothing else to talk about besides the weather, which is the same weather we’ve been experiencing for about a month: It’s going to be blazingly hot today, and just when it gets to be unbearable, a Nashville-sized rain cloud will form directly over some kind of fun activity like Movies At The Park or a free Nashville Symphony concert, it will storm violently for however long it takes to cancel said activity, and then the sky will be filled with sunshine and rainbows before giving way to a beautiful blood-red sunset not unlike the one pictured above. “Damaging winds and very, very heavy rain” are in the cards for us today which may be enough to wash away the pools of melted Nashvillians from the sidewalks, but probably not. Get us out of here.
- Promises, promises. Remember when the VA hospital in Murfreesboro, along with two other VA hospitals, accidentally used tainted colonoscopy equipment and infected some people with Hepatitis and HIV? Channel 4 checked back in with them this week and they said that although they learned a lot, they can’t really promise it wouldn’t happen again. Yikes!
- Home is where the residency is. Metro Councilman Rip Ryman filed an ordinance that would require all Metro department heads to actually live in Davidson County, which is apparently becoming quite a problem.
- Bits & pieces. The Tennessean put together a very nice little retrospective on Vince Gill through the years (we told you it was a slow news day) … Nashville is stretching out the Fourth of July party as long as possible, spanning the whole weekend from Friday-Sunday … Metro Police accidentally took down an Ethiopian immigrant instead of the dangerous fugitive they were really looking for because, well, both of them had dreadlocks.
